Assam gears up to host nat'l games after two decades
1 2 Guwahati: Assam is progressing with plans to organise the National Games in 2027, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday while inaugurating two key sports academies in North Guwahati. The state last hosted the National Games in 2007. Sarma stated that all matches of the upcoming National Games will be hosted here in Guwahati. "We have already started initial preparation for organising national games. But the games will be held after the election (assembly polls to be held in 2026)," he told the media. Although the state assembly polls are likely early next year, Sarma confirmed that the games are unlikely to take place in 2026. "We are going ahead targeting 2027. All the games will be held here. We have been informed that the finals will also be held here only. Definitely, the sports lovers are enthusiastically waiting for the national games," he added. M eanwhile, Sarma inaugurated the permanent site of the Assam Cricket Association's Cricket Academy and the Guwahati Town Club's Football Academy at Fulung in North Guwahati on Saturday. According to a govt. release, the Assam Cricket Association's Cricket Academy campus is equipped with 10 practice wickets, a cricket ground with five centre wickets, one of the largest indoor cricket halls in the country with 10 wickets, residential facilities for players, and provisions for technical directors, coaches, and other staff. The Guwahati Town Club's Football Academy features two football grounds, a 60-bed hostel, and a football pavilion, with future plans to arrange indoor games. "Both academies have provisions to impart training under the guidance of coaches of international standards," the release added. Sarma said that through these two academies, major sporting infrastructure for both football and cricket has been created to support and encourage budding sportspersons. He stated, "With systematic training, guidance from national and international standard coaches, and regular monitoring, positive outcomes could be expected, thereby fulfilling the purpose of establishing the academies." Preparations are also underway to build sports infrastructure in Chandrapur to support Assam's aim of hosting the National Games, officials said. Additionally, an Olympic-standard swimming pool is being constructed next to the badminton stadium in Amingaon in North Guwahati, while around 100 stadiums are currently under construction across the state. The Chief Minister emphasised that proper utilisation of existing sports facilities could enable Assam to produce quality sportspersons and enhance its achievements in sports. However, he expressed concern that, relative to the scale of infrastructure developed, the emergence of good players has been limited. Thus, the Chief Minister emphasised that the central focus must remain on the development of athletes. Over the past five years, Assam has witnessed notable successes through Hima, Lovlina, and Nayanmoni. Yet, Sarma stated that the state has the capacity to attain a higher level of accomplishment. USA cruise to 114-run victory over Namibia
MUSCAT: United States of America (USA) delivered a dominant performance to secure a convincing 114-run win over Namibia in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 match reduced to 43 overs per side due to late arrival of the teams at the Oman Cricket Academy ground on Saturday. Road closures leading to heavy traffic on the route to the stadium in Al Amerat led to the late arrival of both teams and saw the match start later than planned, but it was the USA who quickly found their rhythm, posting a formidable total of 293/8. The delay in the start saw the match shortened to 43 overs each. Despite the disruption, the USA's batting order made sure to make the most of the reduced overs, with Andries Gous leading the charge with a patient 76 off 83 balls. Gous shared a crucial 110-run partnership with captain Monank Patel, who also contributed significantly with a rapid 65 off 60 balls. Milind Kumar provided the late acceleration, blasting 54 off just 34 balls, including 6 boundaries and 2 sixes. Saiteja Mukkamalla chipped in with a quick 31 off 31 balls, while Harmeet Singh's fiery 18 off 9 balls and Shadley van Schalkwyk's unbeaten 21 off 10 balls ensured the USA reached a challenging 293/8. Namibia's bowlers struggled to stem the flow of runs. JJ Smit was the most successful with the ball, picking up 4 wickets for 46 runs in 9 overs. Bernard Scholtz supported Smit with 3 wickets for 47 runs. In reply, Namibia's chase was soon in trouble as they lost early wickets. JP Kotze (2) and Zane Green (16) were both dismissed early, and despite some resistance from Jan Frylinck (16), Gerhard Erasmus (18), and Malan Kruger (32), Namibia's chase never gained momentum. Milind Kumar was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for 48 runs, while Harmeet Singh (2/35), Sanjay Krishnamurthi (1/12), Saurva Netravalkar (1/20) and Nosthush Kenjige (1/27) added further pressure on the Namibian batting lineup. Lower-order contributions from Ruben Trumpelmann (21) and Shaun Fouché (22) gave Namibia some hope, but they were eventually bowled out for 179 in 40.2 overs, falling short by 114 runs. The win strengthened USA's position at the top of the points table with 18 points, while Namibia remained in 6th place. Namibia will face Oman (14 points) on Monday.
