Andre Russell on his best moments in his career: The 2016 World Cup, that semi-final game against India…
In the 2016 T20 World Cup semifinal in Mumbai, West Indies were looking a bit iffy to chase down a mammoth 193 runs posted by India. However, Andre Russell, with his cameo of 43 just in 20 balls, took West Indies home, and they eventually went on to win the tournament. Russell has announced his retirement from all formats in international cricket after the second T20I against Australia, and when asked to pick his memorable moment, he went with this knock of his. 'Definitely [my best moment was] the 2016 World Cup, that semi-final game against India where I brought the team home, me and Lendl Simmons, and obviously the start that we got from the other batters,' Russell said in an interview with the Cricket West Indies (CWI). 'Chasing 190-plus in that semi-final in India, with the crowd supporting India only, that was already a bit of pressure, but the wicket was a very good wicket, so the confidence that we had in the changing room and the batters that were left to come, it gave me the freedom and the confidence to go out and play the role that I did,' Russel, who also took Rahane's wicket in the match, added. Russell is a two-time world champion having won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. Since 2019, he has played only the shortest format of the game and has snapped up 61 wickets and scored 1078 runs in 84 outings. 'Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life. When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realize what you can achieve. This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others,' Russell said as per a release by Cricket West Indies. 'I love playing for the West Indies and I love playing at home in front of my family and friends where I get to showcase my talent and produce more high-quality performances. I want to finish my international career on a high while being a role model for the next generation of cricketers coming out of the Caribbean,' he added.

"Against India...": Andre Russell Picks 'Best Moment' For West Indies Ahead Of Retirement
West Indies power-hitter Andre Russell, who is set to retire from international cricket, handpicked his swashbuckling knock in the semi-final of the 2016 T20 World Cup in Mumbai against the hosts India, as his best moment with the Men in Maroon. During the West Indies' pursuit of 193, Russell arrived at the crease on number five with 77 required from 41 deliveries. Russell upped the ante and walloped 33 off just 20 balls, hammering Virat Kohli over the midwicket to power the Caribbean side in the final with two balls to spare. "Definitely [my best moment was] the 2016 World Cup, that semi-final game against India where I brought the team home, me and Lendl Simmons, and obviously the start that we got from the other batters," Russell said in a Cricket West Indies (CWI) interview as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. "Chasing 190-plus in that semi-final in India, with the crowd supporting India only, that was already a bit of pressure, but the wicket was a very good wicket, so the confidence that we had in the changing room and the batters that were left to come, it gave me the freedom and the confidence to go out and play the role that I did," he added. The West Indies went on to overwhelm England in a memorable final to lift the coveted T20 World Cup title for the second time in four years. Remarkably, Russell was a part of both of those special moments. "Obviously, two World Cups, it's just a different emotion. You sleep, you wake up [on the morning after the final], and you realise you've only been sleeping for two hours, but you feel well-rested because you just want to see what's going on on the internet, you want to see all of those memories and all of those good comments. So those are the two most important moments, playing for West Indies," he said. Russell will be retiring from international cricket after being named in the squad for the opening two games of the five-match T20I series against Australia at home. The two T20Is will take place at his home ground, Sabina Park in Jamaica, and the venue will serve as his farewell to international cricket. "It's a pretty good feeling. I think, [from the] first time I came to Sabina Park as a kid, and then to actually walk on the grass and feel the atmosphere and look in the stands and everything, and [to] now, I've achieved so much out of cricket for the last couple of years. I did my best in every chance I got, representing West Indies," Russell said, on signing off at his home ground. "I think it's the perfect ground and the perfect series - against a good team as well, Australia - to end my international career. By just seeing the [social media] posts and seeing stuff going around on the internet, I get a bit emotional, to be honest, but, you know, decision already made, and I think I've done well enough to actually say, yes, that's it for me towards international cricket," he added.

Russell set to retire after Aus T20Is
Andre Russell, who was included in the 16-member West Indies squad against Australia, is set to hang up his boots from international cricket during the T20I series, starting from 20 July. He had missed being a part of the squad against England late last year, due to an injury. The Jamaican who is a two-time world champion, having been a part of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup winning squads in 2012 and 2016, will play his last two international matches on 20 and 22 July at his homeground in Sabina Park. Russell was thankful to have represented the West Indies and expressed his pride in donning the maroon jersey for more than a decade. "Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life," he told Cricket West Indies. "When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realise what you can achieve. "This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others." The two-time World Champion expressed about finishing his career in front of the home crowd and hope to bid a memorable farewell to the game. "I love playing for the West Indies and I love playing at home in front of my family and friends where I get to showcase my talent and produce more high-quality performances. "I want to finish my international career on a high while being a role model for the next generation of cricketers coming out of the Caribbean." Having played only the shortest format of the game since 2019, the swashbuckling all-rounder has snapped 61 wickets and scored 1078 runs in 84 outings. His raw skills in domestic T20 leagues won his teams championships with Russell being a major contributor in many of such victories. Darren Sammy, who was his teammate, captain and is now the West Indies coach acknowledged Russell's hunger to perform and win for the country. "Andre has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor. Whether I was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered. "I wish him all the best on his next chapter, and I hope he continues to inspire generations to come." Andrew, Blades named for T20Is Cricket West Indies (CWI) has unveiled a 16-member squad for their upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia, starting July 20, following the conclusion of the Test leg which Australia swept 3-0. Andrew, just 18, is a highly-rated wicketkeeper-batter known for his maturity at the crease and proficiency against spin. Blades, who made his ODI debut last December, impressed with the new ball and gets a shot at making his mark in the shortest format of the game. Skipper Shai Hope leads a squad featuring experienced campaigners like Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, and Rovman Powell. Head coach Darren Sammy stressed that the series is part of West Indies' roadmap towards the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, set to be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka. "Our focus is clear - we're building towards winning the T20 World Cup in 2026. This series gives us a chance to refine our playing style and strengthen our core group," Sammy said. Acknowledging recent home losses, Sammy added, "We haven't had the results we wanted at home in our last two series, but this is a fresh start. We're confident in our group and hungry to turn things around."
