‘Black Mirror' VFX supervisor James MacLachlan reveals that ‘the Callister itself needed updating' for the unprecedented sequel

'What's really interesting is the breadth of what's going on,' Black Mirror visual effects supervisor James MacLachlan says of the buzzy seventh season. He adds that series creator Charlie Brooker "would pull things out of the recesses of his brain, references that were really obscure. Even to the point where we were discussing escalators in Tottenham Court Road, and how the metal shines when it catches the light." Watch our full interview above with MacLachlan joining our Gold Derby "Meet the Experts" VFX panel. Season 7 of Black Mirror dropped on Netflix this year after a two-year break. Each episode of the anthology series takes on new characters to tell a dystopian tale of technology. However, the most recent season broke new ground with 'USS Callister: Into Infinity.' That installment won four Emmys, including Best TV Movie. The follow-up sees the crew of the virtual spaceship deal with problems arising in the wake of their leader's death. Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, and Jesse Plemons return to the series for the episode. MacLachlan says, 'We've got a number of protagonists fighting one another and then flying battles in space and lasers and explosions and heart of infinity.' MacLachlan, who did not work on the 2017 episode, approached the sequel, "less like Star Trek. We're slightly more Star Wars with a flourish of gaming through the middle. It was a hell of a lot of fun dealing with the guys on set and seeing their reactions to some of the subtle changes we made from when they did it in 2017. The script developed into a place that was quite new. Even the Callister itself needed updating.' As to whether the visual effects supervisor had any inspiration from gaming, he reflects, "Growing up, Doom 2 was interesting and so was Wolfenstein because of the rooms and how you move through that world." 'USS Callister: Into Infinity' was directed by Toby Haynes, who received an Emmy nomination for his direction on Andor. MacLachlan admits, 'Working with Charlie and Toby was phenomenal. Talk about imposter syndrome when you sit down with those two and they're nodding about how a space battle is working. Everybody would sit back and make notes furiously and, you know, reference things we hadn't heard of before. The creative juices flowing was so much fun with so much to learn and so much to take in.' 2025 Emmy predictions: best actress, limited series or TV movie

Cristin Milioti is way out in front, the only actress named on all ballots for limited series/TV movie actress and the only unanimous No. 1 pick in Round 1 across all major categories. Michelle Williams is a solid second, receiving some keen support from the panel, but Milioti's rising crime boss with a brutal origin story has stolen the BuzzMeter's heart. 'If there's any justice in this world,' declares Lorraine Ali, 'Cristin Milioti will make the cut for her portrayal of Mafia daughter/complex villain Sofia Falcone in 'The Penguin.'' 'As 'The Penguin's' feral villain, Cristin Milioti has been a shoo-in for this race for quite a while,' assures Tracy Brown. 'Cristin Milioti brought arguably the tour de force of the year in 'The Penguin.' Give her her trophy,' says Trey Mangum, though he adds, 'Rashida Jones' episode [of 'Black Mirror'] ripped me to bits. It's one of the best things I've seen her in.' As do several panelists, Matt Roush touts both Milioti and Williams: 'Cristin Milioti literally scorched the screen. Michelle Williams' bold, raw performance in 'Dying for Sex' as a sexually adventurous cancer patient is equally impressive.' Glenn Whipp says, ' 'Babygirl' plus terminal illness doesn't sound promising, but 'Dying for Sex' upends cancer tropes left and right and is anchored by a terrific Michelle Williams.' Renée Zellweger has a chance to match a rare feat, says Kristen Baldwin: 'Back in the 1980s, Eileen Brennan earned Oscar and Emmy nominations for playing the same character: 'Private Benjamin's' Capt. Doreen Lewis' — which the two-time Oscar winner could do this year for reprising Bridget Jones in 'Mad About the Boy.' More predictions: Limited / TV movie actor | Limited series 1. The ‘Black Mirror' Season 7 episodes ranked, from worst to first

Season 7 of Black Mirror dropped April 10 on Netflix after a two-year break. English showrunner Charlie Brooker wrote or cowrote all of the episodes, as usual. He's a five-time Emmy winner for writing and producing "San Junipero" in 2017, writing and producing "USS Callister" in 2018, and producing "Bandersnatch" in 2019. He received a sixth career Emmy nomination last year for writing "Joan Is Awful," but lost to Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer). Speaking of "Bandersnatch" and "USS Callister," Season 7 marks the first time Black Mirror has revisited previous storylines in the form of cameo and a sequel, respectively. Will Poulter's computer programmer character Colin Ritman was featured in the interactive "Bandersnatch" and now returns with a small role in "Plaything." Meanwhile, "USS Callister: Into Infinity" is a full-on sequel to the original outer space installment, with Cristin Milioti and Jimmi Simpson reprising their crew members of the titular starship. More from GoldDerby 'The Last of Us' Season 2 premiere reveals Catherine O'Hara's surprise character and her connection to Joel 'The Last of Us' creators explain one big Abby change in Season 2 premiere 'White Lotus' star Aimee Lou Wood calls out 'SNL' for 'mean and unfunny' skit As for the other new episodes, "Common People" features Rashida Jones and Chris O'Dowd as a married couple whose lives change forever after a medical emergency leads them to the Rivermind start-up company. "Bête Noire" experiments with the Mandela effect concept, where many people believe an event occurred when it did not. "Hotel Reverie" toys with the idea of remaking old movies using real actors (like Issa Rae's Brandy) and artificial intelligence (like Emma Corrin's Dorothy). And "Eulogy" stars Paul Giamatti as a man who enter into the past with the help of technology. Fans have been debating the merits of the half-dozen new installments. Some of the notable names that can breakthrough include Tracee Ellis Ross from creator Charlie Booker's writing submission 'Common People,' along with Issa Rae and Emma Corrin's enigmatic turns in 'Hotel Reverie,' Peter Capaldi's unhinged villain in 'Plaything,' rising star Siena Kelly's fiery and timely execution in 'Bête Noire,' and Cristin Milioti and Jesse Plemons' return in the meta-sequel 'USS Callister: Into Infinity,' which all add to the campaign's power. Milioti, notably, is also an early frontrunner in the lead actress race for HBO's 'The Penguin,' making her a potential double nominee. Leading the pack is Erin Doherty, who delivers a tour de force in the third episode of 'Adolescence' as a psychiatrist trying to understand the mind of a disturbed young boy. Doherty, best known for her acclaimed role as Princess Anne in 'The Crown,' proves once again that she's a force of nature on screen. In addition to Doherty, Christine Tremarco, a long-respected British TV actress, is emotionally devastating as the mother of Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper). Her final episode opposite Stephen Graham, who plays her husband Eddie, is a master class in restrained, heartbreaking drama — and an Emmy clip waiting to happen. 9 Hidden Netflix Features You Need to Know About

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Have you ever wanted to hide your watch history on Netflix? How about turning off that annoying 'are you still watching?' notification that pops up after you've dozed off? Keep on reading for all the details. In this article you'll find nine must-know tips you need to elevate your Netflix experience. The list includes handy shortcuts to navigate the platform faster, the easy way you can reset your Netflix recommendations and get suggestions for all-new titles, and even how to control Netflix hands-free. And make sure to check our previous article on how to use these secret Netflix codes to unlock hidden shows and movies, from Disney musicals to adult animation. Cristin Milioti features in Black Mirror Season 7 Cristin Milioti features in Black Mirror Season 7 Netflix How to Use Netflix Party There's a way you can watch Netflix with friends and family members without being in the same room. This is with the help of a free Chrome extension called Teleparty (formerly Netflix Party). With Teleparty, you can easily sync playback between viewers, so everyone can watch what's happening at exactly the same time. As with any watch party, banter is key, so that's why there's also a side-screen chat box where you can talk to each other as the movie or show plays. Added to that, Teleparty also works with Disney Plus, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime. How to Delete Viewing History on Netflix You can't delete your viewing history on Netflix, but you can certainly hide it, which is effectively the same thing. To do this, go to your account page, select profiles, choose a profile, and then open viewing activity. From here, you can choose to hide individual titles or entire series. Just click the 'hide' icon next to the content you want to hide, and no-one will be able to see it in your watch history. If you want to hide everything with a single button press, select the 'hide all' option at the bottom of the page. Netflix Keyboard Shortcuts Using a mouse to navigate Netflix isn't the fastest. We recommend learning the following keyboard shortcuts to get around more efficiently on your desktop, whether you want to pause, rewind, or adjust the volume quickly. Spacebar - play or pause Left and right arrow keys - rewind or fast-forward by ten seconds Up and down arrow keys - adjust volume M key - mute and unmute F key - toggle fullscreen Escape key - exit full-screen mode How to Turn off 'Are You Still Watching?' If you're idle for around two hours, Netflix pauses the content and sends a prompt to your screen asking if you're still watching. While it's nice the streamer checks in on us, offering a way to prevent burning through an entire season of a show as you sleep, sometimes you want to be left alone to binge in peace. To turn off the 'are you still watching?' message, you'll need the following browser extensions. For Chrome, download Never Ending Netflix or Netflix Pause Removal For Firefox, download Netflix Pause Removal Unfortunately, there is no way to turn off the 'are you still watching' message within the app itself. The only 'fix', which isn't really a fix, is to turn off autoplay. To do this, head to settings and then manage profiles. There, choose a profile, and click on playback settings. Finally, untick autoplay next episode in a series on all devices, and click save. Netflix Search Tips The search box on Netflix isn't just for the titles of shows and movies. You can search using a whole range of other terms. For instance, if you're looking for horror movies, just type the word 'horror' into the search box. Or, if you're a fan of a particular actor, type in their name and Netflix will show you all of the content they have featuring them. Finally, everything Woody Harrelson has made in one place (OK, everything he's made that Netflix has license to stream, but still). Alternatively, while watching, press 'more info' to find an actor under the cast, then click on them to see what else they have on Netflix. How to Customise Netflix Subtitles Netflix's default subtitles aren't the only option. In fact, there are plenty of different ways you can customise the subtitles to your liking, whether you're watching a foreign film, or a TV show where everyone mumbles incoherently. To play with your subtitles and get them how you want, go to settings and then subtitle appearance. Here you'll find options to change the font style, text size, background color, background windows, and shadow effects. Any choices you make will be saved to that profile and reflected the next time you watch something. Never again miss a line of dialogue. Reset your Netflix Recommendations Sometimes Netflix recommends a title that really isn't up your street, plunging you into an existential crisis as you wonder whether it really knows you at all. The fix is simple: a hard reset. For this, go to 'manage profiles', then select 'viewing activity.' Now clear your entire watch history by hitting 'hide all', which is found at the bottom of the page. This gives you a clean slate for Netflix to generate more recommendations, which will be based on what you watch next. Control Netflix Hands-Free Don't want to use your hands? Netflix offers an alternative way of navigating with a whole range of voice commands, letting you play, pause, skip, and rewind titles without moving a muscle. The first method of doing this is via a smart TV. Check to see if your TV remote has a microphone button, and if so, you can control Netflix by speaking into it. The second method is by connecting a Google Home or Alexa device. While connected, use voice commands to control Netflix via the power of speech. Who needs hands anyway? How to Add a Netflix PIN Sick of other people watching content on your account? Lock it down and prevent any and all unauthorized access by adding a simple PIN code. To do this, go to your account, select your profile, then go down to profile lock. From here, follow the instructions to create a PIN. If you've got kids in the house, don't forget that you can also block titles from their view. Go into settings and select the maturity rating you want on the profile, or even block specific TV shows or movies.
