Emmy-winning composer likens working with 'White Lotus' creator Mike White to 'toxic relationship'
Cristobal Tapia de Veer says he's checking out of 'The White Lotus' for good. After three seasons, the Chilean-Canadian composer whose trademark sounds helped define the hit HBO series, says he won't return. He blames a growing rift with the show's creator and director Mike White. The three-time Emmy winner says he's "relieved" to have closure after butting heads over the musical score during post-production on the Thailand-set third season. The composer also says backlash from some viewers unhappy with his theme song for the latest season was overblown. The season finale of "The White Lotus" airs Sunday on Crave. This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 4, 2025. David Friend, The Canadian Press

El Waili's Score of Ramadan Series ‘Ekhwaty' is a Nod to White Lotus
El Waili's Score of Ramadan Series 'Ekhwaty' is a Nod to White Lotus Ever since the beginning of Ramadan, there has been a feverish conversation all over social media about the undeniable similarities between El Waili's score on the Egyptian Ramadan 2025 series 'Ekhwaty' and the theme song of the iconic HBO hit 'The White Lotus'. And, as a loyal member of the #WhiteLotus fan community, I had to go watch 'Ekhwaty' myself to hear with my own ears that diabolical rumor. Turns out, it wasn't too far off. The creeping melodies, the almost imperceptible dissonance and that unsettling undercurrent that's become synonymous with Cristobal Tapia de Veer's White Lotus compositions in the first and second seasons, it's all there. However, there were no clear indications of such accuracy. So, instead of feeding into the already rowdy narrative on the Twitter-verse, we decided to do a little investigation and end the yapping with a word from El Waili himself. 'Definitely, the White Lotus soundtrack was a significant influence on the music direction, in line with Director Mohamed Shaker Khodeir's vision.'' El Waili tells SceneNoise, 'The idea was to develop an Egyptian sound and identity in the realm of music making that is influenced by the environment and focuses on combining the noises of the cityscape, as White Lotus is the most known in this genre.' Led by El Waili, the theme song of 'Ekhwaty' is a collaborative project with the composer and theatre director Salam Yosry and a group of producers and musicians, includinug Ahmed Bahaa, aka BOB, 5mastashr, and Amr Hamama, with support from Aly El Din Omar, Donia Wael and Tariq Anwar. The group combined recordings of human voices, noise textures and instrumentals to create a distinct sound that reflects the bizarreness and suspense of the series while being deeply connected to Egyptian culture. It's like El Waili asked himself, 'What if the 'White Lotus' was a family drama in Downtown Cairo?' (minus the boat). Directed by Mohamed Saker Khodeir and written by Muhab Tarek, 'Ekhwaty' is a gripping mystery thriller with a generous dash of wit, that follows the story of four sisters whose lives are turned upside down by a mysterious crime. The series brings together a powerhouse cast led by Nelly Karim, Ruby, Kinda Alloush and Gihan El-Shamashergy. From the subtle subliminal tension woven into the soundtrack and the aesthetics of the cinematography, you almost expect Jennifer Coolidge to swan in, clutching a hibiscus cocktail, saying 'Yoo-hoo', only to find the four sisters Nahed, Soha, Ahlam and Nagla laying Rabe3's lifeless body on the kitchen table. One could say, El Waili has planted his own little 'seed' of discord, musically speaking.

The White Lotus' New Theme Music Is Dividing Fans, But There's A Surprising Story Behind It
The White Lotus' latest season opener may have already gripped fans, won over critics and pulled in an even bigger audience than its predecessors after just one episode – but there's one part of the show fans are still pretty unhappy about. Yes, the refreshed theme music for season three continues to be a sticking point for many White Lotus viewers, particularly after the previous two offerings proved to be surprise hits (even inspiring an official club remix from trance superstar Tiësto). Composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer has worked on all three seasons of the award-winning drama's opening music, including its latest incarnation, Enlightenment, and previous works Aloha! and Renaissance. Speaking to Spotify in 2023, six months after the season two finale aired, Cristbal opened up to Spotify about his hopes for his next White Lotus theme. 'For Thailand, I want to bring in some Eastern philosophy, something a little bit spiritual,' he said. 'I love the Buddhist temples there, and funnily enough I have a collection of Thai gongs. I have 36 Thai gongs to make melodies with, so you can expect to hear some of those. I'd really like to go deep with it, make it take a journey.' And in a separate interview with Variety from around the same time, the Chilean-born Canadian musician shared some of his unusual musical inspirations that would feed into his season three composition. He claimed: 'I hear interesting things in TikTok or YouTube sometimes. I think that the best song I heard in the last few years that I can remember is people harmonising to a cat on TikTok. 'There's a cat, and somebody put some piano and then some girls started harmonising, and then there's all these versions harmonising this cat, it's super moving and so spontaneous and fresh that this is grabbing a lot more my attention than super-produced pop music. 'I'm a fan of pop music, but it feels like it's been a while that I feel like something has surprised me. So I've been looking a lot into these eight-second bits of music that people [are] putting together and harmonising a cat or stupid, silliest things. 'To me, it's like a gold mine, it's just moving to me. It feels like you are actually in contact with a person.' In 2022, Cristobal won two Emmys for his work on The White Lotus, for composing the original opening music as well as scoring the whole show. His additional work includes the cult British thriller series Utopia, the horror movie Smile and its 2024 sequel, the Black Mirror episode Black Museum and Nicole Kidman's erotic thriller Babygirl. I Regret to Inform You 'The White Lotus' Changed Its Iconic Theme Song
"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." If you waited three years to hear the iconic White Lotus theme song again every Sunday night, I unfortunately have some bad news to share. The iconic melody and howls you know and love from season 1 ('Aloha!'), and even the more operatic remix in season 2 ('Renaissance'), are not in the third season of the show. Instead, a new tune, playful and staccato, plays over the opening credits. It's still catchy, for sure—but it's not the same. The former White Lotus theme became a viral sensation, especially during the second season in 2022. It was dubbed a 'banger' by multiple outlets; streams of 'Aloha!' increased by 200 percent on Spotify and 'Renaissance' was even remixed by Tiësto. So it's no wonder why viewers were surprised to find the beloved song was replaced in the new season, which debuted tonight on HBO. Composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer, who wrote all three theme songs for The White Lotus, has not yet addressed the change, but he previously hinted at his inspirations for season 3. 'For Thailand, I want to bring in some Eastern philosophy, something a little bit spiritual,' he told Spotify's newsroom For the Record. 'I love the Buddhist temples there, and funnily enough I have a collection of Thai gongs. I have 36 Thai gongs to make melodies with, so you can expect to hear some of those. I'd really like to go deep with it, make it take a journey.' He also teased his approach to the season 3 music when he spoke to Deadline in 2023. 'I really liked this orchestral thing. I might go with the orchestral. We'll see,' he said. 'I mean, it has to fit Thailand, but it doesn't mean that it has to mimic local music or anything like that.' If you're having withdrawals from the original melody, tune in to both versions below.
