Woodbury County supervisors, Crittenton Center working to secure grant
WOODBURY COUNTY, Iowa (KCAU) — For the second time, Woodbury County Board of Supervisors are partnering with the Crittenton Center on the application for a Community Development Block Grant from the State of Iowa. The board first approved the request back in February, but the application came back before supervisors on Tuesday after a clerical error prevented approval from the state. The Crittenton Center cares for up to 27 kids every day. Some of those children are involved in the preliminary discussions of the renovations, highlighting what they see as important for the project. We look forward to seeing them get this grant and from what we've been told, it sounds like the application meets all the requirements and intended uses. The grant is worth 600,000 dollars and that will be towards the upgrades and facility improvements at their teen center,' said Woodbury County Board of Supervisors Chairman Dan Bittinger. Crittenton Center receives $30K for Orange City development
ORANGE CITY, Iowa (KCAU) —The Crittenton Center has announced that they received two grants that total $30,000. These grants will help support one of their developments in Orange City. The Crittenton Center received $25,000 from GrowOC Funding and $5,000 from the Sioux County Community Foundation, the Center announced in a Tuesday release. Specifically, the funds will allow them to put up a structure that will provide shade and also have outdoor learning opportunities through things such as water tables, sand and mud tables, a sandbox, and outdoor play kitchens. 'Play is essential to a child's development,' said Kim Scorza, CEO at Crittenton Center, 'and these outdoor spaces will offer our children the chance to build social skills, strengthen physical coordination, and explore their creativity in a safe and supportive environment.' Midwest 8-Ball Championships kick off in Sioux City
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The 59th Midwest 8-Ball Championships started on Wednesday, April 30 at the Seaboard Triumph Foods Expo Center, with nearly 2,000 players in attendance this year. With 150 pool tables laid out, a variety of evenly matched players are looking to claim part of $85,000 in prize money. The tournament started off with a classic game of 9-ball which will be followed by a singles and doubles match up. Crittenton Center receives AIA Iowa Impact Award for Tiny Homes The coordinator of the tournament wants people to know that anyone is welcome to stop by and enjoy watching some pool. 'Here this weekend, we have 150 pool tables on the floor and we're going to have probably pretty close to 2,000 people here at the end of the tournament,' Midwest Tournament Association president Ace Leiding said. 'So we're looking forward to a really great weekend, and if you've never seen 150 pool tables in one location, come on down, check it out because it's pretty cool.' Crittenton Center receives AIA Iowa Impact Award for Tiny Homes
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCUA) — The Crittenton Center was honored with the AIA Iowa Impact Award for their Tiny Homes project. According to a release from the Crittenton Center, they received the award on April 24. The Impact Award goes to architectural projects that help serve social, humanitarian, community, or environmental causes, according to the release. The Center said that they received the award for their unique and compassionate approach to addressing the needs of vulnerable young adults who are transitioning out of foster care into adult life. 'These homes are more than just shelter- they're a foundation for hope, stability, and independence,' said Kim Scorza, CEO of Crittenton Center. 'We are deeply honored that AIA Iowa has recognized the impact of this project, which reflects the power of design to change lives and strengthen our community.' 2025 Sioux City Farmers Market opening with day of festivities 'Working with the kids and the Crittenton team has awakened us even further to how architects can be community activists.
