Supreme Court judge tears into 'unfair' A Current Affair story that aired on eve of Matt Wright's chopper crash trial: 'Not what journalists should be doing'

A judge has torn into Channel Nine for broadcasting a story on the eve of Crocodile wrangler Matt Wright's Supreme Court trial which gave 'the idea he is guilty of something and is going to jail'. Jury members were asked if they had watched the program, which aired on A Current Affair on Tuesday night, just hours after the jury in the trial had been empanelled. 'It seems clear that it was a piece of journalism that was aimed to suggest that Mr Wright is guilty of something and that's not what TV journalists should be doing,' Justice Alan Blow told the jury on Wednesday morning. 'It was a segment of a program that suggested that Mr Wright was guilty, screened on the night before his trial was getting underway. 'It had a list of witnesses. It's a stale list. It's not the same list (the prosecution) read out to you yesterday.' Wright is facing three charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice relating to his alleged actions after a chopper crash that killed his friend and Netflix co-star Chris 'Willow' Wilson. He has pleaded not guilty to all three counts. Justice Blow said the story on A Current Affair showed a photograph of the helicopter crash site in Arnhem Land with text showing what could be found at certain places in the bush. 'This isn't a case about why the helicopter crashed,' he told the jury. 'It's not suggested that Mr Wright is responsible in any way for the crashing of the helicopter. 'If you watched the program you might get the idea he is guilty of something and is going to jail for it. 'It was quite unfair and (could have seen) this trial aborted.' One of the 12 jurors told Justice Blow he had watched the program but said he still believed he could perform his role in an impartial way. Justice Blow allowed the trial to continue but warned jurors not to access the program. 'Please don't try to watch it,' he told the jury. 'It's very important Mr Wright gets a fair trial and watching it could interfere with a fair trial.' The trial continues.

The police officer we love to hate — actor Tertius Meintjies

As social media users look back at old TV shows and movies that have found new fame in virality, the 1992 hit Sarafina has come to the fore as one of Mzansi's favourites. Among the favoured and captivating scenes revisited by old and new fans is the unforgettable shot of Crocodile (played by Dumisani Dlamini, the equally viral father of rapper Doja Cat) meeting his end. The police officer behind the murder was played by Tertius Meintjies, who has continued to captivate audiences in a slew of acting roles. We take a nostalgic journey through some of his memorable performances and find out what his current pursuits are in the entertainment industry: Where have you been since Sarafina and what have you been up to? It's been 35 years in the industry now. I've been around the world a couple of times and have gained new experiences that are mostly good, some not, and life has happened as it should. I went to Durban last year to celebrate Sarafina while Mbongeni Ngema was still alive. Leleti Khumalo and John Kani were also there. Coming together again was an amazing experience, but what struck me was how the movie is more powerful now compared to 1992. Take us through your audition process. What was that like? I didn't audition for the role, I was offered the role and auditions in those days were live; whereas nowadays it's all self-tapes. What did the landscape look like in South Africa at a time when apartheid was still in force? When shooting Sarafina, South Africa was going through a transition period, and there were a lot of interesting things happening where it was all about the youth. They had hope that South Africa would be a peaceful country and that freedom would prevail. Their energy on its own brought us together, both white and black people, to produce a movie like Sarafina. I still remember my role as a policeman in a blue uniform. Back at that time, policemen were not popular — and they still are not, but that's a story for another day. How do you feel about the industry today? Our industry has changed completely, and one of the main reasons is that everything is digital. Technology has taken over the film industry. There is a trend in Beijing where people take movies in a portrait angle, it's no longer landscape, and what's interesting is that young people are getting involved. One thing I want to address, though, is that all digital platforms and what other people use to create film must be used to educate, inform, enlighten, and unite people. People in South Africa need to be educated, especially in the entertainment industry. There is so much money going into sports, but the arts are being neglected, and it shouldn't be because it's a very powerful and handy tool. What happened to the copyright bill? Why is it not going through? There are so many artists who, to this day, haven't received their royalties. Some movies and films are still aired, but no credit is given to the artists - they live and die in poverty. Take me down memory lane. What are some of your greatest memories of your career? Sarafina is one of them. I also worked with great directors such as Mani van Rensburg on a television series called Verspeelde Lente, shot in the Karoo. As cold as it was, that's where I understood what filmmaking is about and how sometimes in performance, you don't have to act but just be. Another television series I enjoyed working on was with director Gerrit Schoonhoven on Plek fan die fleis freters. What are you working on, and what should we expect? If a wonderful role comes along, I will take it because as you get older, the roles become fewer. I've been working on a lot of things. I'm writing a reality show that will air soon. I'm writing a theatre play and making documentary films.

Rosehill Inside Mail: Anything goes for trainer Ron Quinton on Saturday

Hall of Famer Ron Quinton is hoping to bookend the Rosehill Gardens meeting with Like Anything and Watch My Girl on Saturday. Like Anything is contesting the Rosehill opener, the Chandon Handicap (1100m) then Watch My Girl is in the last of 10 races, the Toyota Forklifts Handicap (1300m). The Quinton runners are also at the opposite ends of their race careers – Like Anything is a promising two-year-old having just her third race start while Watch My Girl is a rising five-year-old mare who is likely to be retired to stud this spring breeding season. Like Anything, a daughter of Arrowfield Stud's leading stallion Maurice who is also the sire of Watch My Girl, impressed Quinton last start when she ran on late for second behind Godolphin's Crocodile. The pair clash again at Rosehill but Crocodile is the $4.40 TAB Fixed Odds favourite while Like Anything is rated a $15 chance. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'She's still learning her trade but she gives me the impression she might get over a middle distance. 'But she's done well in both her starts and I think we will give her a break after Saturday and try to bring her back in spring.'' Quinton only has a small team in work these days but his stable is in form with four winners from their last seven starters including the promising Signor Tortoni who bolted home by four lengths at Gosford on Thursday. Watch My Girl can add her name to the stable's growing list of recent winners when she has her second run back from a spell at Rosehill. Jason Collett throws the kitchen sink at the well-backed Watch My Girl and she holds on to win Race 5 at @newcastleraces_ for trainer @RonQuinton ðŸ'¥ — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) November 16, 2024 Quinton revealed there were genuine excuses for Watch My Girl's first-up flop when she ran only 11th to Dark Jewel in the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic at Scone a month ago. 'Watch My Girl was a bit disappointing at Scone but she pulled up with thumps,'' Quinton said. 'She's fine now, she's bounced back really well. 'She's probably off to stud later this year so it would be nice to win another race or two with her. She's been a good mare but probably a length or two off stakes level.'' The trainer has booked 3kg claiming apprentice Jace McMurray to ride Watch My Girl and reduce the mare's impost to 60kg. Quinton revealed he was alerted to McMurray's emerging talents some months ago. Congratulations to Jace McMurray, who rode his first Canterbury winner in Race 3 - and has backed it up with another winner in Race 4! 🤩 Just Feelin' Lucky does the job for @MFreedmanRacing! @aus_turf_club — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 28, 2025 'My old apprentice partner, Gordon Spinks, rang me and said this kid, Jace McMurray, is a good rider and needs to be coming to Sydney,'' Quinton said. 'I haven't got enough horses in work these days to give an apprentice enough opportunities but he's going to do well at Michael Freedman's. 'Jace is a talented young kid, he works hard and he's willing to listen – he's definitely got a future.'' â– â– â– â– â– TAB FIXED ODDS BIG BETS AND MARKET MOVERS Race 1: Crusader Voyage $6-$4.40, Namaste $8-$5.50, Scoop The Pool $11-$7 Race 2: Super Norwest $6-$5, Salute Again $8-$6, Hell Of A Fox $15-$7.50 Race 3: Let's Go Again $8-$6.50, Silentstar $11-$7, African Daisy $26-$11 Race 4: Hopper $8-$4.40, Hell To Pay $6-$4.60, Tasoraay $8-$4.80 Race 5: Codetta $4.40-$3.30, King's Secret $8-$5.50 Race 6: Mickey's Medal $8-$4.40, Little Cointreau $6-$4.80, Chica Mojito $15-$6 Race 7: Snack Bar $6-$3.80, Getafix $11-$6.50 Race 8: Bear On The Loose $4-$3.60, Don Diego De Vega $4-$3.70, Touristic $6-$4.40 Race 9: Half Yours $4.40-$3.60 with a bet of $3500 at $4, Cormac $8-$6.50, Assailant $8-$6.50, Misterkipchoge $11-$7 Race 10: Sacred Rocks $4.60-$3 Trainer @BBakerRacing gave @bendorries76 the lowdown on Robusto's Stradbroke chances at the Straddie calcutta in Brisbane today ... and he also gave a big tip for one of his runners at Rosehill Gardens. — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) June 13, 2025 • Market Movers: $19 to $8.50 feature race runner at Eagle Farm â– â– â– â– â– EARLY QUADDIE Race 3: 1,7,13,17 Race 4: 3,8,11 Race 5: 2,3,9 Race 6: 3,5,6,10 QUADDIE Race 7: 1,4,5,11 Race 8: 1,3,5,6 Race 9: 6,8,10,11 Race 10: 6,8,11 â– â– â– â– â– PRICE CHECK HALF YOURS (race 9) has been well backed from $4.40 into $3.60 including a sizeable wager of $3500 at $4. As the two titans prepare for a battle that will test their skills, cunning, and will to survive, the jungle holds its breath, witnessing a showdown that has never been seen before. Anacondas are huge snakes that live in South America—and guess what? Crocodiles live there too! Both of them are considered as beasts in the animal kingdom. So, what happens if these two powerful reptiles meet? Who would win in a fight? Let's explore their size, strength, and special skills to find out which one is the real king of the swamp. Key differences between crocodile and anaconda Factor Anaconda Crocodile Winner Size Can grow up to 22 feet, weigh around 550 pounds, body diameter of 12 inches. Can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, and reach lengths of 20 feet. Largest: Lolong at 20 feet 3 inches and 2,370 pounds. Crocodile Speed & movement 5 mph on land, 10 mph in water. 22 mph on land in short bursts, 15 mph in water. Crocodile Power & teeth Over 100 backward-facing teeth, 90 PSI constriction force. 3,700 PSI bite force, cone-shaped teeth for piercing, and crushing bones. Crocodile Senses Heat-sensing pit organs, sensitive to chemicals and vibrations. Highly attuned to pressure changes, vibrations, night vision, and underwater sight. Anaconda Physical defenses No armor or spikes, but stealthy with eyes on top of the head. Tough, armored scales, rapid movement in water and on land. Crocodile Combat skills Ambushes with a bite, then constricts to overpower prey. Surprise attacks with a powerful bite, then hold and tear or roll to rip off limbs. Draw Anaconda vs Crocodile To determine which reptile would win in a confrontation, we need to examine their physical traits and combat strategies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Đăng ký Undo By comparing both animals across six key categories, we can identify which one holds the upper hand and is more likely to survive in this intense encounter. Size Both anacondas and crocodiles rank among the giants of the animal kingdom. The anaconda, a formidable constrictor, can grow to a staggering 22 feet in length and tip the scales at around 550 pounds. Its body can be as thick as a foot in diameter. While reports exist of a record-breaking specimen stretching close to 30 feet, such extraordinary size is extremely rare. Crocodiles, on the other hand, surpass anacondas in sheer mass. These powerful reptiles can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and reach lengths of 20 feet. The most massive crocodile ever recorded was a saltwater crocodile named Lolong, who measured an astounding 20 feet 3 inches long and weighed 2,370 pounds .Comparatively, crocodiles are larger in size. Size and movement While anacondas aren't particularly fast movers, they can manage short land sprints at around 5 miles per hour and glide through water at speeds up to 10 miles per hour. In contrast, crocodiles—despite their heavier build—are surprisingly quick. They can surge across land at speeds of up to 22 miles per hour for brief moments and swim at a brisk 15 miles per hour, making them significantly faster than anacondas in both environments. Here, crocodiles has the advantage of speed. Power and teeth Anacondas possess over 100 sharp, backward-facing teeth, which help them grip and draw prey into their mouths. T hough they don't rely on a powerful bite to kill, their constriction force is formidable—about 90 PSI—sufficient to fatally crush a human and subdue much larger animals like deer. Crocodiles, on the other hand, boast the most powerful bite force ever recorded, with a staggering 3,700 PSI. Their cone-shaped teeth are built for piercing flesh, shattering bones, and delivering devastating damage to vital organs. Senses Like many other snake species, anacondas rely on specialized sensory adaptations to hunt. They use heat-sensing pit organs to locate warm-blooded prey, and they are extremely responsive to airborne chemical cues and ground vibrations in their as reptilian relatives, share some comparable sensory traits. They are highly attuned to shifts in pressure and vibrations in the water, and they also have excellent night vision and the ability to see clearly underwater—key advantages for an ambush anacondas have a better sense. Physical defenses Despite their impressive size and strength, anacondas have relatively few physical defenses. They are powerful constrictors but not particularly fast, and their bodies lack protective features like armor or spikes. However, their eye placement on top of their heads allows them to stay mostly submerged and hidden in water, giving them an edge in stealth rather than defense. Crocodiles, on the other hand, are well-fortified. Their thick, armored scales offer strong protection against attacks, making them difficult to injure. In addition to this natural armor, they are capable of rapid movement both in water and on land. Overall, crocodiles clearly hold the upper hand when it comes to physical defense. Combat skills Both anacondas and crocodiles excel in their unique methods of attack. The anaconda relies on stealth, ambushing its prey, biting, and then coiling its massive body around the victim, applying intense pressure to constrict and overpower it. Crocodiles, in contrast, initiate surprise assaults with a powerful bite, ensuring their prey can't escape the crushing strength of their jaws. If they target a vital area like the head or neck, they hold firm until the animal succumbs. If they latch onto a limb, they twist and roll, often ripping the limb off in the process. Given their distinct but equally formidable combat skills, it's tough to pick a clear winner—so we'll call this one a draw. Key differences between these two beasts While both anacondas and crocodiles are reptiles, they differ significantly in their physical characteristics. An anaconda, a type of snake, contrasts with the crocodile, which, although resembling a lizard, is not directly related to them. Crocodiles are bulkier and quicker than anacondas, both on land and in water. However, anacondas can grow longer, and their sensory abilities generally surpass those of crocodiles. Despite sharing an aquatic habitat, their hunting techniques diverge. Anacondas use their powerful constriction to crush their prey to death, while crocodiles rely on their vice-like bite, tearing into their victim until it succumbs. These differing methods of attack give us a clear indication of how a confrontation might unfold. Anaconda vs Crocodile- who would win a fight In a fight, the crocodile would likely defeat the anaconda. A fully grown crocodile is simply too massive and powerful for an anaconda to overpower. Even if the anaconda attempted an ambush, it would have a hard time coiling around the crocodile enough to restrict its movements and deliver a fatal crush. Additionally, the anaconda's attack starts at the head, which places its most vulnerable area near the crocodile's formidable jaws. The crocodile would probably strike with a powerful bite to the anaconda's head, either killing it immediately or continuing to tear until it succumbs. While an anaconda could potentially take down a crocodile under the right conditions, the crocodile's speed and raw strength would likely end the fight in seconds, whereas the anaconda needs much longer to secure a kill.
