Unduk Ngadau tale in Dusun by Petronas

Published on: Thursday, May 29, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 29, 2025 Text Size: Petronas team posing with Jeffrey and the cast. Kota Kinabalu: Petronas has come up with Tinorindak Olisi (Crown of Love), a heartfelt tale of discovering triumph not just through titles, but through love, cultural pride and quiet resilience. The film offers a moving reflection on the deeper meaning of what it truly means to win the Unduk Ngadau beauty pageant. Tinorindak Olisi features the Dusun language as its primary medium, interwoven with local Sabahan dialects, highlighting the beauty of diversity and unity among the State's many ethnic groups. The story follows Elyna Jamis, a young woman competing in the Unduk Ngadau pageant. Driven by her dreams, Elyna steps onto the stage with courage and pride, embodying the hopes of her supportive community. Amid the cheers and celebrations, she finds herself on a journey far deeper than the pursuit of a title one that challenges her perceptions of success and identity. 'In line with this year's theme, 'Kaamatan for All', this film reminds us that true strength lies in the support and unity we share as a community, especially as we strive toward progress together,' said Petronas Senior General Manager of Strategic Communications, Group Strategic Relations and Communications, Siti Azlina A Latif. Advertisement 'Through this story, Petronas hopes to inspire all of us to continue uplifting one another in our shared journey toward progress,' she added. The film was unveiled in conjunction with Yayasan Petronas' Uplifting Lives Festive programme, attended by Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, who is also Deputy President of the Kadazandusun Cultural Association. During the event, Jeffrey, accompanied by Siti Azlina, handed over essential food items and festive packs to selected recipients from Manggatal. Launched earlier this month in Tambunan, the Uplifting Lives Festive programme reached a total of 500 recipients across Manggatal, Tambunan, Tongod and Kepayan, all identified by the Sabah Social Welfare Department. Uplifting Lives Festive is part of an ongoing effort to support communities in need during key festive seasons in Malaysia, including Chinese New Year, Aidilfitri, Kaamatan, Gawai, Deepavali and Christmas. 'We not only celebrate the spirit of togetherness through our Kaamatan webfilm but also reaffirm our commitment to strengthening bonds within the community. From showcasing local culture to spreading festive joy to underprivileged families, Petronas continues to honour traditions while building a more connected and compassionate society for all,' said Siti Azlina. Tinorindak Olisi, directed by renowned filmmaker Ismail Kamarul, is now available on Petronas' official YouTube and Facebook channels. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kaamatan film chronicles true story of Unduk Ngadau runner-Up

Elldiwirna Saimen KOTA KINABALU (May 28): A Kaamatan film tells the true story of Elldiwirna Saimen finishing first runner-up in last year's national level Unduk Ngadau. 'This truly tells my story,' said Elldiwirna who played the main role of Elyna Jamis in the Petronas Kaamatan special, Tinorindak Olisi (Crown of Love), launched on Tuesday. The film follows Elyna, a young woman competing in the Unduk Ngadau pageant, who feels disappointed after placing second. The story serves as a reminder that true strength lies in community support and unity, especially as we strive for collective progress. 'A lot of people know I was the runner-up at the national level of Unduk Ngadau. When I read the storyboard, it felt like my own story — I could really connect with the role,' said the 26-year-old Master of Biotechnology student at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), to the media after the film's launch at The Palace Hotel. Unlike the character she portrayed, Elldiwirna wasn't disheartened by her second-place finish in the 2024 National Unduk Ngadau pageant. 'Of course, I know how it feels to want to win and not get first place — so I understand how to portray that emotion,' she said. 'But I didn't feel sad at all. Those who know me understand my journey with Unduk Ngadau. Last year was my fourth time joining the pageant, and I represented my sub-district, Kiulu. I'm not disappointed to have come second. I'm proud of myself because every struggle was worth it. Not everyone makes it to the Top 7 — to place second is a huge achievement. I truly feel proud of what I've accomplished.' She emphasized that while education adds value, it is not a requirement to participate in Unduk Ngadau. 'It is not like applying for a job. As long as you have Dusun blood, even if you're mixed, you are eligible. But having a good education is definitely a bonus. UNK is about representing our heritage, and when we're well-educated, people tend to trust and listen to us more. It helps, especially since we become public figures. So yes, education adds value.' Elldiwirna hopes Tinorindak Olisi will inspire viewers, especially young women. 'This reflects Petronas' commitment to showcasing Kaamatan, which is part of Malaysia's rich heritage,' she said. 'I want viewers to feel inspired. When they watch the main character — who isn't number one — it mirrors real life. In any competition, there's always a ranking, but I want people to see that even without coming first, you can still be proud. Especially our young women — I want them to feel uplifted and inspired by this story.' Meanwhile, Daphne Iking, who was crowned Unduk Ngadau Sabah in 2003, said stepping into the role of Elyna's mother in the film was more than acting — it was a return to her roots. 'As a former Unduk Ngadau Queen, I once stood as a symbol of tradition, strength, and the spirit of Huminodun. This role brought me back to that essence — but this time, through the eyes of a mother guiding the next generation,' she said. 'In many ways, it reminded me that Kaamatan isn't just about the beauty we wear on the outside — but the values, struggles, and stories we carry within. To portray a mother holding on to culture, yet gently letting her daughter find her own path … that hit home.' She added that the story reflects how support and community are crucial to growth and togetherness — and that everyone is a winner when they've given their best.

STAR eyes 15 seats - Jeffrey

Jeffrey (seated centre) and Petronas Senior General Manager of Strategic Communications, Group Strategic Relations and Communications Siti Azlina A Latif (seated third left) give the thumbs up to the Kaamatan film. KOTA KINABALU (May 27): STAR president Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan revealed that the party aims to contest 15 state constituencies in the upcoming Sabah State Election. 'It is no secret — about 15 seats,' he told reporters when asked about the number of constituencies the party plans to contest. He emphasized that this does not conflict with STAR's alliance with Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) regarding seat allocations, noting that discussions are ongoing with PBS as well as within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition. 'In GRS, we must resolve this seat issue before holding discussions with other parties,' he said at the Palace Hotel on Tuesday during the launch of the Petronas Kaamatan film Tonorindak Olisi (Crown of Love). Jeffrey noted that several rounds of discussions have already taken place and will continue. 'It's a healthy process. The final decision will be made before the election,' he added. 'Personally, if I had the ability, I would like to contest all the seats. But of course, we cannot do that as we are part of a group and must share. That is our hope — to get extra seats because we believe we have the capability to win. We will put our views forward,' he said. Parties under the GRS coalition include STAR, PBS, Gagasan Rakyat, Parti Cinta Sabah, United Sabah National Organisation (Usno), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah.
