Dirty sodas, deep-fried PB&Js join University of Tennessee food options for the fall

Students arriving at or returning to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville campus for the fall 2025 semester will find new restaurants and cafes ready to serve a variety of food and drinks, from deep-fried PB&Js to dirty sodas. UT has two dining halls where students can use their meal plans: Rocky Top Dining Hall at 1917 Andy Holt Ave. and Stokely Dining Hall at 1311 Lake Loudon Blvd. But for students looking for some newer options, here's what UT has cooking on campus: Crust - This personal pizza and wing concept is opening in Fred D. Brown Hall at 1817 Andy Holt Ave. Crust aims to be "the go-to spot for casual comfort food with a fresh twist," according to Vol Dining. Hillside Café - Located inside the new College of Nursing Building, the cafe serves build-your-own breakfast sandwiches or omelets in the morning and Mediterranean flatbreads, bowls and pitas for lunch. The cafe also serves Starbucks coffee. Keoke Coffee Bar - A local food truck, Keoke Coffee Bar is opening a permanent location in Stokely Hall at 1311 Lake Loudon Blvd. Along with coffee and energy drinks, the coffee shop will introduce dirty sodas to its menu! Snackin' Wagon - UT is partnering with HT Hackney and Hackney Brands to create a new food truck stationed at the AMB Amphitheater outside Neyland Stadium. The menu includes a Nashville Crispy Chicken Sandwich and a deep-fried PB&J. Traditions Deli - Located inside Volunteer Hall at 1525 White Ave., this new deli will feature stacked sandwiches, grilled cheeses and custom hot dogs in an environment adorned with Vols memorabilia. Vol Dining also is rebranding the Vol Hall's Provisions on Demand Market - or P.O.D. Market - to become a Vol Market convenience store with snacks, quick grab items, drinks and essentials. Cumberland Foodhall expanding Vol Dining footprint Later this semester, the Cumberland Foodhall will open on the ground floor of Hub Knoxville on the Strip. The food hall came together through a partnership between UT's food vendor, Aramark Educational Services, and the building's co-developer Core Spaces. Zen Sushi & Wok will be a counter-service concept inside the food hall with sushi rolls, poke bowls, bubble tea, dumplings and egg rolls. The Cumberland Foodhall also will have lockers that allow people to pick up food from two other vendors: Athenian Grill and Big Orange Grill. Athenian Grill will serve Mediterranean food, including bowls, wraps and gyros. UT farm-raised beef burgers, chicken tenders and Philly cheesesteaks will be served at Big Orange Grill, the second location for this UT concept and the third restaurant partnership with UT's Northeast Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center. The food hall will accept Dining Dollars, Flex Plan, VolCards, credit cards and debit cards. Additional restaurant options at University of Tennessee While UT and Aramark operate several locations on campus, UT provides some space for independent options. Food trucks can set up near Neyland Stadium or Circle Park, and students can use Dining Dollars and their VolCards to pay for meals. Food trucks operate on campus 10:30 a.m-3:30 p.m. A longstanding restaurant on campus is Ray's Place, located at 1413 Circle Drive. The restaurant opened in the late 1980s in a space designated for Randolph-Sheppard Act vendors, who are visually impaired workers. Ray Mowery opened and operated the restaurant until his death in August 2023. His kids, Ray Mowery Jr. and Rennie Mowery, are operating the restaurant and honoring their father's legacy. The hours are 6:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. every weekday. Here are more restaurants on and around the UT campus: 1817 Taqueria - A Mexican restaurant moving to the Student Union next to Big Orange Grill, it previously operated in Fred Brown Hall. | 1502 Cumberland Ave. Arena Cafe and Arena Deli - The cafe is a hot bar offering breakfast and lunch, while the deli offers sandwiches and salads inside Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center. | 1600 Phillip Fulmer Way Big Orange Grill - A newer concept featuring farm-raised UT beef and UT Creamery ice cream inside the Student Union. Event noticeboard: Swords, sorcery and a walk in the forest

The Spinoff's top picks of events from around the motu. The ball was wonderful, thanks for asking. It was so fun to get dressed up, and see friends dressed up. That, plus a workshop run by Steven Junil Park I attended recently and Emma Gleason's wonderful Substack, Crust, has got me thinking a lot about what I wear. Recently my most coveted item of clothing is a pair of polar fleece pants and my style is best described as low-effort. How boring!!! As the ball reminded me, what you wear can alter and enhance the whole experience of an event, and make it more fun. That's surely why so many kids' birthday parties are dress-up. As adults we probably need to think beyond constant costumes, and certainly beyond the rules of formal wear, but still keep in mind the experience altering quality the clothes have, and use it for good. Meow Nui, 92 Vivian Street, Te Aro, Wellington 7pm Saturday, July 26 $53 This is the kind of event you will remember on your death bed and it will bring a happy tear to your eye and a flutter to your heart. Life was sweet and good after all. For one night you can be a princess, or a squire, or anything you like. You will be amazed and delighted, and you will have some great photos to remember it all. Love has been poured into absolutely every element of the ball. There's a series of custom-made installations – Falkor the luckdragon as a couch, the sword in the stone, a turret and Artax in the quicksand, his reins poised for you to pull them – that serve as sets for photos and a couple of professional photographers are included. There's an elaborate stage, one Tom Sainsbury as the host and live sword fighting. And of course, there's the music. It will begin with the hero Luke Buda, then the supremely talented weirdos Grecco Romank and finally, Princess Chelsea and the Dream Warriors. Chelsea Nikkel always surprises me – just when I thought it was impossible for her to get better, she continues to level up. Chris Schulz has recently written about this phenomenon and touted her Aotearoa's best live performer. After last Friday's ball I have to agree, but it gets even better. She's not alone on stage – there's another seven musicians, the Dream Warriors, and every one of them is incredible too. If that's not enough to convince you to go, I have one more fact. This will be Princess Chelsea's last live performance for the year, she told Schulz she needs her energy to write new songs. That means its the last show of a particular era. The next shows, who knows how many moons away, will have different songs, a different energy and possibly different Dream Warriors. You have to catch it while you can! It's called Crust and it's the new artisan bakery (and pastry shop) in Cascais

Founded two years ago and operating out of a production space in Alcântara, Lisbon, Crust has been supplying dozens of restaurants and cafés with their handmade breads and pastries. On July 10, they landed in Cascais with their very first shop open to the public – and it's not just the same old favourites on offer. You'll find the new bakery and pastry shop in the Navegador building, on Avenida 25 de Abril. 'Lisbon already has so many options... So we thought: why not Cascais?' says head baker Lucas 'Fefo' Ferreira, speaking to Time Out. 'We believed there was more room to grow here – and this first week has already been a success', the Brazilian proudly adds. With around 30 seats and a counter lined with breads of all shapes, sizes and colours – plus croissants, focaccias, brioches, bagels and pain au chocolat – Crust is far more than just a bakery. On the menu you'll also find açaí bowls (€10), granola bowls (€8), avocado toast (€11.50), eggs Benedict (€12.50), and a summery green salad (€10). You can also opt for the courgette pancakes topped with yoghurt sauce, smoked salmon and a poached egg (€12); the burrata toast with caramelised peach, sliced prosciutto, onion and homemade honey (€12); the croissant stuffed with cashew paste, burrata, prosciutto, rocket, roasted pepper, Parmesan and honey (€11.50); or the ciabatta toast with prawns, rocket, spinach, mango and grapefruit (€12.50). Creativity knows no bounds here – one of the latest additions is a brûlée cube. Also catching the eye are the Russian and Ukrainian specialities, like syrniki – little cheese pancakes served with berries and sweet sauces (€11); or the various traditional Eastern European breads, such as Borodinsky, a dark rye loaf, Vatrushki brioches, or the rich black bread with chocolate and raisins. 'We've adapted the original recipes in our own way', says Lucas, referring to the team's diverse background. 'The owners are Ukrainian, and many of our colleagues are Ukrainian, Russian and Brazilian'. The group is also behind the Lisbon restaurants Manifest and Shakar. In fact, Crust was originally launched as a production kitchen supplying bread and pastries to those spots, before branching out as its own brand. The company also owns Roastberry, whose specialty coffee – in various origins and formats – is now being served at the new Crust in Cascais. 'The idea here is to have some fun, experiment with different products, and introduce variations without compromising the rest of our work', explains Lucas. 'All of our breads are made with a long fermentation process – nothing is immediate – and we have a deep respect for the time it takes to make good bread. Our goal now is to keep those artisanal principles while scaling up production. We want to move into a larger facility so we can reach our full potential', says the head baker, who currently oversees the daily production of around 150 loaves, in addition to all the other baked goods. 'And eventually, we want to open more shops – but this is our first test run dealing with direct-to-customer sales'.
