The Crystal Apple: Kelly Vogel

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Each month, WBTW and Ultimate California Pizza recognize an educator who is making a difference in their classroom and their community. This month's winner is Kelly Vogel. Vogel grew up in New Jersey and Pennsylvania but moved to Myrtle Beach with her family in 2013. Since that time, she's been teaching fifth-grade students at Aynor Elementary School. She said she loves watching students grow during the school year and knows why fifth grade is such an important year for learning and development. 'It's a year to not only grow but a year to understand that they need to be responsible,' Vogel said. 'There are some things they need to learn that next year is going to be a complete change. There are things that we, as fifth-grade teachers, need to work on to get them ready for sixth grade, middle school, and as they continue on.' Vogel said one of her short-term goals is to meet kids where they are, but her ultimate goal is to make sure they keep reaching for the stars. '[I want] to help them realize that the sky is the limit and to set high expectations for them and that they can achieve anything they put their mind to,' she said. That's why Kelly Vogel is this month's winner of the WBTW Crystal Apple award.
