After less than a year, this taco spot from Texas is closed in Wynwood

There's one less taco shop in Wynwood, once the epicenter of the taco world in South Florida. The latest casualty of the brutal summer of 2025 is Velvet Taco, the brand from Dallas that opened at 2820 NW Second Ave. in Miami in the fall of 2024. Now, the restaurant is closed, according to Yelp, its location wiped from the brand's website. A phone call to the remaining South Florida Velvet Taco confirmed the closing; the Fort Lauderdale restaurant, which opened in 2023 at 305 S. Andrews Ave. at Riverwalk, remains open. There was no word on why the Wynwood restaurant closed, but Wynwood has long drawn taco spots, almost to a comical (and maybe worrisome) extent. Among them are the upscale Bakan; the casual Tacology; The Taco Stand, which is home to the secret Michelin-starred omakase spot Hiden; the South Florida brand Talkin' Tacos; the recent arrival Tacos Atarantados from Mexico, which is located inside Sala de Despecho; the Mexican chain Tacombi from the Yucatan; and the granddaddy of them all, Coyo Taco, which celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this year. Velvet Taco Wynwood boasted not only a 48-seat dining room but also a large outdoor patio and the brand's first cocktail bar as well as more than 20 taco recipes including spicy tikka chicken; the Cuban Pig with slow-roasted pulled pork; and beer-battered cauliflower. There were also the Weekly Taco Features (WTFs), new recipes that changed every seven days, like the Pride brunch burger taco served in a rainbow waffle tortilla. And no matter how many tacos they tried, true fans never wanted to skip the famous red velvet cake dessert. The brand, which was created in Dallas by Randy DeWitt and Jack Gibbons in 2011, has almost 50 locations across eight states and is eyeing international expansion.
