Busch hits a 3-run homer, Shaw adds a solo shot as the Cubs rout the Cardinals 9-1
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Michael Busch hit a three-run home run, Matt Shaw added a homer and an RBI triple, and the Chicago Cubs routed the St. Louis Cardinals 9-1 Saturday night. After getting shut out 5-0 in Friday's series opener, the Cubs built a six-run lead against Andre Pallante (6-9) by the second inning. Colin Rea (9-5) allowed one run in six innings, and Carson Kelly and Dansby Swanson each had three of Chicago's 13 hits. Busch set the tone by leading off the game with a double into the corner in right field, then scoring on Kyle Tucker's RBI single. Tucker scored when right-fielder Jordan Walker's throw got away from Willson Contreras, the cut-off man, on Kelly's single. In the second inning, Busch made it 5-0 by hitting his 22nd homer of the season — his sixth in eight games against St. Louis this season. Busch hit four home runs during a three-game stretch when the Cardinals visited Wrigley Field last month, but he'd hit only three more in 25 games since. Pallante allowed six runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings, his shortest outing in 53 career starts. He was pulled after Seiya Suzuki doubled and scored on Kelly's RBI single. Shaw tripled home Swanson in the third and added a 395-foot solo homer in the fifth that made it 9-0. Lars Nootbaar doubled and scored the lone St. Louis run on Alec Burleson's sixth-inning groundout. The Cardinals played without All-Star second baseman Brendan Donovan, a late scratch due to left groin tightness, and Contreras was removed from the game after an infield single in the sixth. Justin Turner hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give the Chicago Cubs a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. Leading off the ninth, Dansby Swanson reached on a throwing error on third baseman Jordan Westburg. Manager Craig Counsell then sent Turner to the plate to hit for Michael Busch. Turner drove the first pitch he saw from Keegan Akin (3-1), a 92.8 mph fastball, deep to left-center for the game-ending shot. It was Turner's third homer of the season. Chicago took two of three in the weekend set against Baltimore. The Cubs stayed two games back of NL Central-leading Milwaukee, which won 14-3 at Washington. Shota Imanaga and slugging Cubs overpower Red Sox
Shota Imanaga threw seven scoreless innings, Michael Busch and Kyle Tucker slugged back-to-back home runs in the first, and the Chicago Cubs blanked the visiting Boston Red Sox 6-0 on Saturday. Imanaga (7-3) allowed just five hits, while striking out five and walking one, helping the Cubs take the weekend series and win their fourth straight game. Matt Shaw, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Ian Happ each added solo homers for Chicago, which now holds MLB's best record (59-39). Boston starter Brayan Bello (6-4) allowed three runs on six hits in the loss, striking out four and walking one. Masataka Yoshida and Abraham Toro each tallied a pair of hits for Boston, which dropped its second straight game after posting a 10-game winning streak to end the first half. The Cubs struck quickly in the bottom of the first, as leadoff batter Busch sent the first pitch he saw over the wall for his 20th of the season. Tucker followed up with his 18th of the year to give Chicago an early 2-0 edge. After Dansby Swanson walked and Nico Hoerner singled to begin the second, Vidal Brujan drove in the Cubs' third run with a sacrifice fly to left. Boston threatened to mount a two-out rally in the top of the seventh, as Yoshida singled to right and Toro reached on an infield single, while Yoshida advanced to third on Imanaga's throwing error. From there it took just one pitch for the Chicago lefty to escape the jam, as Connor Wong was retired on a fly out to second. Chris Murphy replaced Bello in the seventh, striking out Reese McGuire before allowing rookie Shaw's third homer of the year with one out. In relief of Imanaga, Brad Keller struck out the side in the top of the eighth. Chicago tacked on against Murphy in the bottom of the eighth, as Crow- Armstrong and Happ clubbed consecutive solo home runs to push the Cubs' lead to 6-0.
