Hong Kong facing ‘challenges' of rising unilateralism, Beijing official warns

The rise of unilateralism and protectionism poses 'a certain amount of challenges' to Hong Kong's development, Beijing's top envoy in the city has said, while urging youngsters to embrace patriotism. Cui Jianchun, the commissioner of the Chinese foreign ministry's office in Hong Kong, said on Saturday that some 'large countries' were obsessed with putting themselves first, imposing unilateral sanctions and threatening the use of tariffs. 'Hong Kong is currently in a new stage of going from stability to prosperity, where there are infinite opportunities. At the same time, the world is facing major changes not seen in a century,' he said at the Hong Kong Cup Diplomatic Knowledge Contest. 'Unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise, which brings a certain amount of challenges to Hong Kong's development.' Cui urged the city's youth to 'take up responsibility for their home soil' amid the 'current situation'. 'They should also have a sense of home and country so they can find their way among the changes happening in the world,' he said. Hong Kong has been caught in the crossfire of US-China tensions, with the city feeling the effects of many of the measures imposed by US President Donald Trump in his tariff war with Beijing.

Photo: RTHK Beijing's Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the SAR, Cui Jianchun, on Saturday said a country has been causing global chaos by enforcing unilateral sanctions and waging tariff wars. Without naming the country, Cui said it has gone against the flow of history as it damaged international treaties and left global organisations. He said China, meanwhile, will insist on treading the path of peaceful development and mutual cooperation. "China is not afraid of being intimidated by a hegemonic power," Cui said during a speech at the Hong Kong Cup Diplomatic Knowledge Contest hosted by his office. "There is no way out for protectionism, and there are no winners in rotten tariffs. "China will continue to actively embrace the world and empower the world with high-quality development and a high-level opening up." Cui called on young people to learn more about Chinese history, understand more about the nation's foreign affairs as they observe what's going on around the world. He said people can then remember their Chinese roots while cherishing the opportunities offered by the times. At the same event, Chief Executive John Lee said he sees young people getting more interested in the country's foreign affairs, expressing the hope that they could learn more about the nation's new developments on the international stage. He noted that under the "One Country, Two Systems" principle, the SAR can engage with other places in areas such as finance under the name of Hong Kong, China. Lee said he's glad that the state leaders of Qatar and Kuwait attached great importance to the delegation he led to the Middle East this week. "We took a step further in our relationships with the governments of the two places," he said. "We created business opportunities, expanded our areas of cooperation as well as our circle of friends."

Top Beijing envoy in Hong Kong meets US diplomat over sanctions

Beijing's foreign affairs representative in Hong Kong has met the top US envoy in the city to lodge 'solemn representations' against the latest sanctions imposed by Washington on six mainland Chinese and local officials. Advertisement Cui Jianchun, the commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, also told US Consul General Gregory May on Wednesday that Beijing would resolutely retaliate against Washington's hegemony. The meeting took place a day after Washington announced its latest round of sanctions. Among those targeted in this round were Justice Secretary Paul Lam Ting-kwok and former police commissioner Raymond Siu Chak-yee, over what the US called the 'transnational repression' of opposition activists under the city's national security laws. Washington also submitted its latest Hong Kong Policy Act Report to the US Congress, concluding that both central and Hong Kong authorities had continued to use national security as a broad and vague basis to undermine the rule of law and protected rights and freedoms in the city. Beijing's foreign affairs arm in Hong Kong on Thursday said Cui met May the day before to express his 'solemn representations' against the US' 'unreasonable sanctions' and its latest report on the city. Advertisement '[Cui] has expressed strong condemnation and firm opposition to the US' gross interference in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs, and sternly warned the US side not to underestimate China's resolute determination to safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests,' the office's statement said.
