Police investigate after woman's body found in Currumbin Creek, Gold Coast
A police investigation is underway after a woman's body was found floating in a Gold Coast creek yesterday afternoon. Emergency services were called to Whitsunday Drive at Currumbin Creek about 2.50pm following the discovery. Police told the ABC the woman was found fully clothed, is believed to be aged between 20 and 40 years old, and could have been in the water for up to a week. A police spokesperson said she was wearing a backpack with a rope tied at the front holding the shoulder straps together. Officers are investigating the cause of death and are awaiting the results of a post-mortem investigation. Whitsunday Drive resident John Wright said he noticed something dark floating down the creek yesterday afternoon. "I had a bit of a look at it then went back into the house and I said to the wife, 'Come and have a look at what this might be,'" he said. Mr Wright's neighbours then got in his boat to investigate what was floating in the water. "He went across to it and was trying to secure it to take it back into land," Mr Wright said. Realising it was a body, the neighbour then called police. Mr Wright said the discovery had stunned the usually quiet and fairly isolated area. "I'd say it has come down with the tide," he said. "We really love the quietness of this area, so for something like this to happen, it's right out of the ordinary." Last night, police divers were scouring the creek and detectives were on the scene. It is the third body to be found on the Gold Coast in the past five days. A man's body was discovered by a member of the public at Echo Beach, on the southern side of Burleigh Headland, on Saturday morning. On Sunday morning, an elderly woman's body was discovered outside Palm Beach Surf Club. Police said both those deaths were not suspicious.
