Rays rout Blue Jays 13-0 behind Lowe, Pepiot for 5-game winning streak
TAMPA, Fla (AP) — Brandon Lowe homered in his third straight game and the Tampa Bay Rays routed the Toronto Blue Jays 13-0 Sunday for a five-game winning streak and their second series sweep this season. Tampa Bay matched its second-most runs in a shutout win behind a 14-0 romp over the New York Yankees on July 29, 2021. The Rays also beat Boston 13-0 on April 30, 2009. At 26-26, Tampa Bay reached .500 for the first time since it was 14-14 before play on April 29. Ryan Pepiot (3-5) ended a four-start winless streak, allowing three hits over seven innings — which matched his career-high. Tampa Bay is 14-5 against Toronto since the start of 2024, including 4-1 this year. Lowe had three hits off Chris Bassitt and is 10 for 17 with four home runs against him in his career. He hit his 10th home run of the season in the first, giving him an extra-base hit in five straight games, and singled twice off Bassitt (4-3). Lowe also singled in the third and in a seven-run, seven-hit fifth inning. Pepiot struck out five and walked one in his first win since April 26. He had been winless in four home starts since April 9 and the Rays had given him 15 runs of support in his previous 10 starts. Eric Orze and Cole Sulser finished a four-hitter in the Rays' fourth shutout this season. The Rays had 15 hits, one shy of their season high. and were 6 for 17 with runners in scoring position. Curtis Mead hit his third home run, a two-run drive in the seventh against Paxton Schultz. The game drew 10,046, the Rays' 32nd sellout in 34 games at Steinbrenner Field.. Bassitt allowed five runs, nine hits and two walks in four-plus innings. Toronto was shut out for the third time. May 25 - Ryan Pepiot threw seven shutout innings, Brandon Lowe went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and the Tampa Bay Rays rolled to a 13-0 victory over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. All nine Rays starters got at least one hit as they used a 15-hit attack to finish a three-game sweep over their American League East rivals. Chandler Simpson, Josh Lowe and Junior Caminero each delivered two hits in the Rays' fifth consecutive victory. Ben Rortvedt had a season-high three RBIs for Tampa Bay and Curtis Mead added a two-run homer. Pepiot (3-5) allowed three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Eric Orze and Cole Sulser came out of the Rays bullpen to allow one hit over the final two innings. For the second straight game, the Rays jumped ahead in their half of the first. Brandon Lowe's one-out home run, his 10th of the season, came off Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt to give Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead. In the fifth inning, the Rays scored seven times while sending 11 batters to the plate. Josh Lowe and Brandon Lowe started with singles, and Caminero doubled to score Josh Lowe and chase Bassitt. Bassitt (4-3) gave up five runs on nine hits over four-plus innings with and two walks and one strikeout. Simpson added an RBI single off reliever Mason Fluharty to make it 5-0. Rortvedt delivered a two-run single to make it 8-0. Yandy Diaz's ground-rule double off Paxton Schultz scored Kameron Misner. The Rays also scored four times in the seventh, highlighted by Mead's two-run homer in his first at-bat after replacing Brandon Lowe. It was his third of the season. Brandon Lowe and Curtis Mead homered, Drew Rasmussen pitched six scoreless innings in a four-hitter and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 on Friday night for only their third three-game winning streak this season. Lowe put the Rays ahead in the third against Eric Lauer (1-1) with his team-leading ninth home run, a two-run drive. Mead homered in the fourth. Rasmussen (3-4) allowed four hits and two walks. Mason Montgomery, Manuel Rodriguez, Edwin Uceta and Pete Fairbanks combined for hitless relief, with Fairbanks working around a walk for his ninth save in 10 chances. Rays pitchers walked a season-high eight. The Rays won three straight games from March 30 to April 1 and five in a row from April 23-27. Lauer had allowed one home run in 12 innings previously this season. He gave up three runs and six hits in 4⅓ innings. Toronto entered following a three-game sweep of San Diego by a combined score of 24-6. The game drew 10,046, the Rays' 30th sellout in 32 games at Steinbrenner Field, their temporary home for this season. After Montgomery walked the bases loaded in the seventh, Rodriguez got Jonatan Clase to ground into a run-scoring double play, then retired Nathan Lukes on a flyout.
