Driver charged after striking woman, infant on sidewalk in Eskasoni: N.S. RCMP

A man has been charged after striking a woman and an infant on a sidewalk in Eskasoni, N.S. RCMP said officers were called to the scene on Gabriel Street Friday around 1:40 p.m. Police said a man driving a GMC Sierra hit the two and then drove away. The 25-year-old woman and the infant, both from Eskasoni, sustained life-threatening injuries. They were rushed to hospital by EHS. Police did not say how old the infant is. Police said when officers were heading to the scene, they saw an abandoned GMC Sierra near the intersection of 74th St. and Shore Rd., where a group of people had gathered. Police then learned the driver ran away. Shortly after, police arrested a 34-year-old Eskasoni man, who they said was showing signs of impairment. Police said he was taken to the RCMP detachment, where a drug evaluation was completed. Curtis Menge has been charged with failure to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm and two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm. Police said Menge is scheduled to appear in Sydney Provincial Court on Aug. 5. Prior to the collision, RCMP said officers responded to a report of a possible impaired driver around 8 a.m. involving the same GMC Sierra. Multiple officers searched for the driver but no one was found at the time. Police said the investigation is ongoing and additional criminal charges are anticipated.
