Canned Beans Recalled in 23 States Due to Potential 'Life-Threatening' Risk
Yellowstone Brown Sugar Molasses Baked Beans are being recalled in nearly half of the U.S. states due to a potentially harmful undeclared allergen. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on May 2 that the Vietti Food Group based in Nashville is recalling 4,515 cases of the beans 'due to the presence of undeclared soy,' which is potentially 'life-threatening' to those allergic to the ingredient. The FDA said in a press release, 'Individuals with an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.' The recalled Yellowstone baked beans are sold in 15-ounce cans and display a best-by date of Feb. 17, 2028, Eating Well reported. A representative for the food brand told the outlet that the affected beans were sold before the recall at Walmart, Associated Wholesale Grocers, K-VA-T Food Stores, Hy-Vee and Meijer. Soy comes from soybeans and is commonly consumed in foods. It is part of the nine major allergens, which include milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and sesame. Food Allergy Research and Education states on its website that soy allergy is 'more common in infants and young children,' with approximately 0.4% of infants in the U.S. affected. According to WebMD, 'Soy can cause some mild stomach and intestinal side effects such as constipation, bloating, and nausea. It can also cause allergic reactions involving rash, itching, and breathing problems in some people.' The outlet adds that soy is 'possibly unsafe' for children allergic to cow's milk, when used as an alternative to the milk.
