Wine bars seem to be having a moment, with a range of new ones opening in cities across Scotland in the last five years. But if your tastes veer more towards fizz, you're in luck as a new champagne bar has opened in a former grand city flat. Cuvée, located at 1 Lyndoch Street in Glasgow's West end, has taken over the space once occupied by Hooligan, a natural wine bar and restaurant that closed in 2024. In rooms above The Drake pub, and next to Rascal cocktail bar, the businesses in this former tenement flat are now owned by Merchant Pubs having been up for sale last year. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad I visited Cuvée on one of the many hot and sunny days we've been enjoying this spring, and found a cool and chic retreat from the heat. In what once was a smart drawing room, is now a 30 cover lounge with seats for 16 at the bar located in another room which I suspect was once a kitchen. Vintage landscape murals and mirrors are on the light cream walls, with the soft, neutral colour palette accented by pinks and greens. Touches of art deco design and to the modern style give nods to a Parisienne and European influence. Ultimately it's like the nicest living room you've visited, and it's (small) dog-friendly. The team have partnered with LVMH so expect luxury fizz and wines such as Churchill's favourite Pol Roger Reserve Brut (£17.50), Ruinart Blanc de Blanc (£23.50), Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial NV (£15) and Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut NV (£16). Dom Pérignon Vintage 2013 is also available by the bottle. Cuvee wine bar is now open in Glasgow's west end. | Rosalind Erskine Not feeling that fancy, we opted for two glasses of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut NV which arrived with snacks of picante gordal olives, mixed fancy nuts and the famous San Sebastian Gilda - a skewered olive, guindilla chilli and anchovy. Archie, my dog, was fussed over by our attentive waiter who was settling into life with a puppy. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad After champagne I chose a glass of Lorentz Crémant D'Alsace Brut NV (£7.50) per glass while my partner enjoyed an ice cold glass of Picpoul De Pinet Terrasses De La Mer 2022 (£7.80 per glass). If you're driving or not drinking mon-alcoholic fizz is supplied by Italian Sea Change Alcohol-Free Sparkling NV (£5) with flavours of elderflower, apple and mint. With the wine and Crémant we enjoyed slightly heartier dishes of massive tempura king prawns and chicken liver parfait served with fig chutney and oatcakes. Other menu items include cheeses, charcuterie and terrines served with bread, oatcakes and condiments sourced from George Mewes; Freedom bakery sourdough - olive oil, aged balsamic; Salt cod croquettas – lemon, aioli; and smoked salmon beetroot salad - vodka and horseradish crème fraiche; with a chocolate ganache and Champagne sorbet for something sweet. The best London Marathon 2025 freebies you can claim with your medal

If you're taking part in the London Marathon this weekend, there's no doubt you've been through a tough training plan to get yourself race-day ready. Once the glorious feeling of crossing the finish line sets in, there are plenty of freebies to get your hands on whether you're in the mood for a burger, pint, pamper sesh (or all of the above). The freebies even start before the race begins. On race-day (Sunday 27 April), marathon runners and race officials can travel for free on TFL services (excluding the IFS Cloud Cable Car and river services) from 4.30am to 6.30pm. All you have to do is present an official running number, course photo ID or course pass. We've rounded up the best offers below and what you have to do to get them. If you're going to cheer on loved ones that are taking part, you don't have to miss out on the freebies either. Dirtea, best known for its mushroom powder, will be handing out free iced coffee and matcha along the course. The location is yet to be revealed, so keep an eye on the brand's Instagram page to find out where it'll be on race-day. Free drink at Greene King pubs If you head to any of Greene King's 128 pubs across the city, you can get a drink on the house when you present your medal, ID and proof of your result on the London Marathon website. Quench your thirst with a choice of Aperol spritz, Peroni nastro azzurro, Peroni nastro azzurro 0.0, CleanCo blood orange spritz, or any soft drink. If you're not in the mood for an immediate post-race pint, you've got until Thursday 1 May to claim the offer. Free drink at The Ivy Raise a glass to crossing the finish line with a complimentary glass of Cuvée when dining at The Ivy. You can only get the free drink when you eat-in on marathon day, so it's worth a look if you want to book in a celebratory post-race meal. Free pizza at Franco Manca After clocking up some serious miles, you can refuel with a free pizza at Franco Manca. All you have to do is present your medal at any of the pizza chain's London locations on Sunday 27 April or Monday 28 April. If you're running the Manchester, Leeds or Exeter marathons you can also claim the offer in these cities on the day of and after the events. Free burger and drink at Bill's Pizza not your thing? Bill's is giving marathon runners and volunteers a free burger and drink on race-day and Monday 28 April. Present your London Marathon 2025 medal or volunteer pass to get your free meal and drink choices that include Coca-Cola, Peroni, Lucky Saint or an Aperol spritz. The offer is available at nine of its London locations — a few which are within easy reach of the finish line on The Mall. Treat yourself to a bowl of homemade pasta for a filling and hearty post-race meal. Take your medal to the Soho restaurant to claim your free meal, with pasta dishes on the menu that include a cheesy cacio e pepe, rich pork cheek ragu, classic slow cooked tomato sauce and more. Gaucho is offering marathon runners a complimentary steak when they present their medal. You can pick from a sirloin, ribeye, rump or fillet at all of its London restaurants from race-day up until Thursday 1 May. A 300g ribeye steak at Gaucho will typically set you back £39.50, so you're really getting your money's worth with Gaucho's deal. When you book, remember to quote 'MARATHON' and bring your medal when you dine. Free brownie and coffee at Cutter & Squidge If a sweet treat is more your thing, Cutter & Squidge is giving London Marathon runners a free brownie and coffee. Pop by the bakery's Soho branch and present your medal to get your freebie. Free bath bomb and massage oil bar at Lush When you're putting your feet up in the days after the London Marathon, you'll want products that are going to help with aching muscles. If you head to a Lush store after the race, you can get a free After solid massage bar, which has magnesium and cooling peppermint to soothe sore muscles, and a free epsom salt bath bomb — its first bath bomb that fizzes in cold water. You'll also get 10 per cent off at the Lush spa if you want to book yourself in for a recovery massage. You can claim the offer at Lush's Oxford Street, Covent Garden, Paddington Station, Waterloo Station or Victoria Station stores. Gymshark is helping marathon runners with sore muscles at its Recovery Day event on Monday 28 April. You can brave an ice bath or work out any muscle knots with Hyperice massage guns available to use. Refreshments will also be provided by Joe & The Juice. The event takes place at the brand's Regent Street store — it's fully booked at the moment, but you can join the waitlist and snag a spot if there are any dropouts.

New restaurants and cafes opening in Glasgow this Spring

From glamorous champagne bars to authentic Chinese street food and a 'Scotland first' specialising in all things egg-y, there really is something to suit every taste. Here are seven new openings to look out for in the coming weeks: Cuvée 1 Lynedoch Street This new Champagne, wine, and cheese bar will open upstairs at a 'grand townhouse' in Woodlands on Saturday, April 26. The team will make the most of the space's period features to enhance what would have been a smart city drawing room, now a 30-cover lounge, with seats for 16 at the bar. Located next door to Rascal cocktail bar, Cuvée will serve a wide selection of Champagnes, Cremant, wines and a 'bijou' cocktail list complemented by a small plates and sharing cheese and meats menu. Gemma Allan, regional sales manager for Möet Hennessy, LVMH, said: 'We are thrilled to partner with Cuvée in Glasgow to bring a new and exciting Champagne experience to the city. "Our collaboration allows us to showcase an extensive selection of our most prestigious Champagnes by the glass, providing an opportunity for guests to savour and appreciate the exceptional quality and craftsmanship that Moët Hennessy is renowned for. "Cuvée is set to become a premier destination for Champagne lovers and those seeking a sophisticated and memorable evening.' Corner shop 45 Old Dumbarton Road New neighbourhood restaurant and wine bar Cornershop promises a menu of small plates including tempura hand-dived scallops, jamon iberico, whole Dover sole with chicken and clam sauce and grilled chilli squid. Wines will be sourced in partnership with local and independent merchants and importers, and, wherever possible, the team will showcase producers who use organic practices. You might recognise the unit as the former home of Grain and Grind coffee shop, but following extensive refurbishment work, we're eager to see how the new owners have reimagined the space. Zennor 287 Langside Road Fans of this stylish East End coffee shop will likely have been keeping a close eye on updates concerning a second Zennor location in Glasgow. Alongside a sneak peek at the new interiors shared on social media earlier this month, owners Sophie and Kieran said: "After getting the keys in December, the past four months have been incredibly gruelling. "Every waking moment has been spent building this new space- it truly has been a labour of love. "From furniture design to fabrication, we have done it all and are so proud of what we've achieved- it's definitely been a journey, but we can't wait to show you what we've created." Taking over the space from the hugely popular TwoEightSeven bakery in Govanhill, the team welcomed their first Southside customers last week with a menu of freshly baked pastries and speciality coffee. Egg Daddy 173 Centre Street Hailed as 'Scotland's first egg bar', Egg Daddy opened in the city's Kinning Park area at the beginning of this month. The concept centres on huge egg sandwiches prepared with 'eggstra love' and a range of additional fillings like veggie-friendly grilled mushrooms, chives and cheddar cheese or the 'Smash Daddy' with an Aberdeen Angus beef patty and sriracha mayo. The Real Wan 10 Clincart Road Already beloved by Glasgow foodies, The Real Wan is back and better than ever following a move from their original matchbox-sized unit in Cathcart to a much larger space in Mount Florida. (Read more: This is what Scotland has been waiting for when it comes to real Chinese food' – Ron Mackenna's restaurant review of The Real Wan) Owner, Lea Wu, said: "We are now in a better place, but my original motivation and idea for The Real Wan will never change. "The food quality won't change. The appreciation for you guys won't change. The bond between the taste of The Real Wan and all you foodies won't change." On that note, expect South-West Chinese dishes of braised beef mooli and tangy pickled Chinese greens in traditional broth, fried aubergine in fermented chilli paste and chicken thighs slow-cooked with Guiyang home-style chilli. According to new signage and a pop-up message on the team's website, TikTok-famous Lee will soon be replacing Salt and Chilli with a sister outlet to his city centre restaurant, Lychee Oriental. (Read more: Glasgow chef Jimmy Lee credits viral TikToks for This Morning fame) Should they introduce a menu similar to that of the original Lychee, Southsiders can look forward to dishes like Hong Kong sweet and sour chicken, claypot duck with pickled ginger and spring onion and Thai style crispy seabass. Café XO Inn Deep, 445 Great Western Road Café XO, led by Andrew Manson, celebrates "all things umami" with a menu featuring the likes of short rib of beef rendang, watermelon salad and black sesame or cured sea trout with buttermilk, dashi, pickled fennel and togarashi. "Café XO isn't just about serving food—it's about sharing a movement," the chef explained. "It's about creating an experience where passion, skill, and enjoyment take centre stage. "I want to bring back the joy of cooking, serving, and truly connecting with guests, without the constant pressure of hitting targets and squeezing every penny out of the process. "When the focus is on delivering a memorable experience for everyone involved, everything else will follow naturally.' The team has recently announced plans to join the Clydeside Containers line-up later this spring, but for now, you can also catch them at Inn Deep bar in the city's West End.
