While Team Canada may have not ended the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship the way they would have wanted to, Will Cuylle had an impressive showing at the tournament. Cuylle joined a team full of some of the NHL's best players including Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon, but he was still able to stand out. Will Cuylle Wants To Give Back To Canada At World Championship After a breakout second year in the NHL with the New York Rangers, Will Cuylle is ready for more. The 23-year-old forward recorded two goals, two assists, and four points in eight games for Team Canada. Throughout the tournament, Cuylle seemed to get better and look more comfortable as he brought his same physically-minded play style he's been known for with the New York Rangers. 'We see the same thing, big, physical skates all around player,' Canada head coach Dean Evason said of Cuylle during the tournament. 'It's unfortunate and or fortunate that we have 13 forwards, and some guys get not as much ice time as they normally get, so maybe don't get into the game, but we really like the way that he plays the game. His presence moving forward, his physicality, will be a big part of our success.' Cuylle mostly played a fourth-line role, but Canada Evason shuffled the lines a couple of times and even had Cuylle playing with MacKinnon at one point. It's safe to say that this is just the start for Cuylle.

Signing Will Cuylle to a long-term contract extension should be the New York Rangers' number one priority this offseason. The 23-year-old forward is set to become a restricted free agent and the Rangers have to take action quickly. Cuylle took a big jump during his second NHL season as he not only increased his offensive numbers, but transformed into a complete and reliable two-way forward. In his third NHL season, Cuylle should only take another big leap in his development and his promise is starting to be recognized around the NHL. He's currently playing for Team Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Championship with a multitude of star talent including Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon. The fact that Cuylle is part of this talented team shows how he is viewed among NHL managers and coaches. If the Rangers take their time to sign Cuylle, there's a chance he could receive an offer sheet from another team and the trend of giving out offer sheets has become more common. The term is also an important part of a contract extension for Cuylle. At this point, Cuylle has not fully emerged into a star, so signing him to a team-friendly extension for 5-8 years is something that must be explored. Over time, Cuylle will grow into his contract and years down the road we could be looking at this potential deal as a sneaky steal if the Rangers play their cards correctly. Will Cuylle goal another Rangers highlight at World Championships
Will Cuylle joined the New York Rangers party at the 2025 World Hockey Championships on Tuesday. The Rangers forward scored his first goal for Canada in a 5-0 win over France. Cuylle was held off the score sheet in the first two games and only played nine shifts Tuesday as Canada's 13th forward in a stacked lineup. But the 23-year-old made the most of it. Cuylle's goal made it 2-0 Canada at 12:11 of the first period, when he sniped a left-wing shot up and over the blocker of France goalie Julien Junca off the rush. That goal was sandwiched around ones by NHL stars Bo Horvat and Sidney Crosby, so Cuylle's tally might be a bit overlooked in the big picture. But Cuylle's kind of used to that. He sometimes gets lost in a Rangers lineup that includes the likes of Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider. Advertisement Of course, that narrative could be changing. Cuylle tied Zibanejad for fourth on the Rangers with 20 goals this season. It was part of a breakout in his second NHL campaign. Cuylle more than doubled his point total (up to 45 from 21) and jumped from 13 goals as a rookie to his first 20-goal season this year. As such, Cuylle moved into a top-six role at times, from his usual spot on the third line. He's an emerging power forward in the League, one who finished the 2024-25 season with 301 hits, tied for third in the NHL, establishing a new Rangers record. 'I think I always knew what kind of player I wanted to be, always tried to play that power forward, physical, good defensively,' Cuylle said at break-up day. 'I think with more opportunity you're able to show what you can do, I guess.' Cuylle hasn't received a lot of opportunity with Canada at the Worlds, though he's played in each of their games, three victories to date. Two days later he was bloodied by a high-stick to his mouth in a 2-1 win against Finland, when he still played 19 minutes but was held off the score sheet. Rangers goalie prospect Dylan Garand posted a shutout for Canada in their tournament-opening 4-0 win against Slovenia. Garand faced 11 shots and since has watched NHL veterans and Stanley Cup winners Marc-Andre Fleury and Jordan Binnington man the goal for Canada. Rangers Fail To Gain Ground In Playoff Race With Loss To Oilers
The New York Rangers failed to capitalize on an opportunity to gain ground in the Eastern Conference playoff race as they lost 3-1 to the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night. The Rangers defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0 on Saturday night, which propelled them to the second wild-card spot. It was a difficult back-to-back game with the Blueshirts traveling from Columbus, but the magnitude of this game was made evident when Peter Laviolette decided to start Igor Shesterkin even though he just played the night before. In the first period, the Rangers committed three penalties. Not only did New York give up a goal on one of the power plays, but it completely got the team out of rhythm. 'I didn't like a couple of those calls,' Peter Laviolette said. 'There is no question (penalties got the Rangers off rhythm). They were able to capitalize on one of them.' To the Rangers' credit, they were able to bounce back from their first-period hiccups and overall played a pretty clean game. In the second period, Will Cuylle fought hard in front of the net for a goal. The fact that Cuylle has 18 goals this season is impressive, but it's the way in which he's scoring that people should take notice of, something his teammates are starting to do. 'That he's a bit of a bull,' J.T. Miller said of what he's noticed about Cuylle. 'He's physical obviously, has good touch in front of the net. He's a good power forward.' Despite a solid defensive effort from the Rangers, Edmonton's speed and explosiveness were just too much for the Blueshirts to handle. Viktor Arvidsson scored the game-winning goal in the third period and Connor McDavid made his presence known by putting the dagger in the hearts of the Rangers with a goal of his own in the final minutes. There was a sense among players in the Rangers' locker room that they did enough to win withstanding the results. 'We did a lot of really good things,' Sam Carrick said. 'It was one of those games where the chances weren't going in for us. I think we did enough. It's unfortunate because this time of year, doing enough but not getting the points doesn't really satisfy you. It's a tough way to give up two points, but we will have to move on.' Regardless of the moral victory, the Rangers are in a heated playoff battle. Every game and point means so much more at this point. The Blueshirts played with a desperation and passion that we just haven't seen this season. It felt like a playoff-type of game while it seemed the Rangers were playing with everything on the line. 'This time of the year it doesn't matter if you do enough,' Carrick said. 'You have to find a way to get two points.' The Rangers will be back in action on Tuesday night against the Calgary Flames.
