2 Malaysians arrested in Cebu City for alleged use of illegal transceivers, 'sniffing devices'
Two Malaysians staying at a hotel in Cebu City have been arrested for alleged distribution and use of illicit transceivers and 'sniffing devices,' the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said Tuesday.
According to the NBI, the two individuals were found to be in possession of and operating illegal transceivers and an International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) catcher during an operation on June 28.
Following this, authorities sought for an application for a warrant to search, seize, and examine computer data. They served the warrant at the hotel on August 8.
Authorities confirmed that the laptops, cellphones, antennas, and other modular setups were cellular and data sniffers that could capture data up to the 5G network.
The NBI said the equipment will undergo further examination.
Meanwhile, the agency said that cases for violation of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 are being prepared for filing.
According to the bureau, the operation was initiated in reply to a request for assistance fromthe Deputy Executive Director of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordination Center. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
