‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' Star Lucy Finally Comes to ‘Guilty Gear Strive'
Fans of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime have been looking forward to seeing Lucy cut it up in Guilty Gear Strive as a DLC character for a while now. During this weekend's EVO tournament, Arc System Works finally pulled back the curtain on how everyone's favorite living Edgerunner fits into its fighting game. Lucy's appearance here looks to be justified through her mind being hacked and transferred to the Guilty Gear universe. Still dealing with the events of Edgerunners that left her old crew dead, she's determined to figure out why she's here and how to get back home. Until she finds those answers, she's got some tricks to hold her own against Sol Badguy and the rest of the Strive roster. Gameplay-wise, her she's got her wrist whips, and her hacking prowess lets her disable her enemy's powers while boosting her own, which is a neat way to adapt her style for fighting game purposes. For the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners fans, playing as Lucy in competitive or the story mode looks to feature some callbacks to the show. She's the first guest character to grace Guilty Gear Strive (and the series overall, looks like) and funnily enough, its second consecutive anime addition. Before her, Arc System Works added Unika from the game's anime series Dual Riders to the roster this past May. Lucy enters Guilty Gear Strive on August 21, and we'll wait to see if she graces Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II with her presence when that series hits Netflix in the near future. Want more io9 news? ‘Panty & Stocking' Just Did Its Own ‘Mandalorian' Spoof
Despite it being over 14 years since anime fans first saw the series, Trigger, the studio behind Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, has reignited the cult classic raunchy New Panty & Stocking with Gartebelt without missing a beat, comedic or otherwise. Much of the Prime Video series' side-splitting success is owed to its sharp timing with a volley of pop culture references. Its third episode is particularly packed with references, poking fun at popular shows like The the third episode of Panty & Stocking, which ambitiously packs three stories into an episode, we see the anime play with mixing up its cast on misadventures. The show proper sees Panty and Stocking, two debaucherous angels trying to buy their way back into Heaven, alongside their rivals-turned-allies, Scanty and Kneesocks, two devils trying to buy their way back into Hell, team up by taking on odd jobs to cleanse Daten City of demons. Episode three sees the odd pairing of Scanty and Stocking infiltrate a samurai dojo to weed out a demon—and said dojo just so happens to be hosted by a warrior who looks an awful lot like if Pedro Pascal's Star Wars hero ditched his armor for robes and dressed up Baby Yoda like a dog wearing diapers. The tale goes beyond its use of the iconography from the Disney+ series, which is soon to be adapted into a theatrical film. Laden within the first of its third episode's three stories are overt references to Star Wars, where Stocking and Scanty 'force-feed' their samurai adversaries' dirty green dog, as well as a tongue-in-cheek flip on the catchphrase, 'This is the way.' For more terminally online Zoomers, their spin on This is the way also tapped into that 'Ugandan Knuckles' territory for laughs, too. If you couldn't decipher the previous sentence, it's the same kind of meme content that spawned Michael Bay directing a Skibidi Toilet movie. If that has you even more lost, consider yourself lucky. In addition to the anime's extended Mandalorian reference, Panty & Stocking has made a cavalcade of references to pop culture touchstones beyond Star Wars' Baby Yoda. As of the time of writing, the three episodes of Panty and Stocking have referenced Attack on Titan, Godzilla, Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Bodyguard, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: The Gathering, Among Us, Super Mario 64, The Karate Kid, Pitch Perfect, Suicide Squad, Wednesday, Queen's Gambit, America's Got Talent, King Kong, Harley Quinn, and The Fast and Furious. The show has also taken potshots at influencer culture on Instagram and how content creators are down bad for clout. In a behind-the-scenes animation video on Studio Trigger's official YouTube channel, the veteran animation team behind Panty & Stocking reiterated how they wanted its younger animators to have fun taking over the reins of the show's assortment of gags and jokes. It's becoming increasingly evident that the show is doing just that. I was rolling at episode 2's GPS joke about navigating the streets by turning the block at every dispensary and weed store cropping up in town. Their comedic finger is on the pulse of what anime fans on the cutoff of Millennial and Gen Z find funny, with the urgency of an action comedy anime arms race. In io9's premiere review for New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, we said the show was a raunchy, foul-mouthed riot, writing, 'The premiere not only channels Panty & Stocking's original, sex-addled spirit but outpaces even the most parental advisory-laden moments of the 2010 series, covering twice as much narrative ground as your average anime opener. And when the chaos appears to have peaked, the anime hints toward even more raucous adventures waiting in episodes to come that'll have both newfound and old-head fans sitting for more.' ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' Season 2 Announced at Anime Expo 2025 With New Director, New Storyline, and a Whole Lot More Blood
Night City is calling once again. During Anime Expo 2025, Netflix and CD Projekt Red officially announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 — a brand-new installment of the acclaimed anime series set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. Revealed during the 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — Behind the Scenes With its Creators' panel, the new season will feature 'an entirely new story, fresh characters, and a raw, realistic take on the most dangerous city of the dark future.' Bartosz Sztybor, story writer and producer of the original series, confirmed the news alongside voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez), host Joey 'The Anime Man' Bizinger, and Edgerunners director Hiroyuki Imaishi. During the panel, fans were treated to exclusive reveals of the official Season 2 logo and poster artwork, according to The Verge. 'David's story might be over, but there's plenty more to discover in Night City,' Sztybor said. 'And to again have the legendary animation studio TRIGGER along for the ride makes us at CD PROJEKT RED so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we've done before.' Taking the reins this season is Kai Ikarashi, who directed Season 1's standout episode 'Girl on Fire.' Ikarashi was formally introduced as the new director in a video message shown during the panel, where he also debuted a 'Director's Voice' video, offering a glimpse into his creative vision for the next chapter. The new 10-episode standalone story is being described as 'sadder,' 'darker,' and 'more bloody,' according to Sztybor, who didn't hold back during the Trigger Studio panel: 'I just wanted to make the whole world sad… when people are sad, I'm a bit happy.' He added, 'It will be also darker, more bloody, and more raw.' A synopsis teases what's to come: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077 — a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter? Ikarashi will be joined by returning Edgerunners collaborators Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) as lead character designer and Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare), who will handle the screenplay adaptation. While there's no premiere date just yet, fans lucky enough to attend the Peacock Theater panel later that night were treated to a closed-door viewing of new teaser footage, which you can peep here. Hell Yeah, ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II' is Happening
After repeated teases over the past year, Studio Trigger revealed it's making a sequel to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, its hit 2022 anime based on Cyberpunk 2077. At the show's AnimeExpo panel on Friday, returning showrunner Bartoz Sztybor and season one voice actors Zac Aguilar (David Martinez) and Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) revealed the new season with a tantalizing poster made by Trigger character designer Ichigo Kanno. The new series is said to be standalone—sorry, season one fans, Sztybor and the trailer itself very much confirm original Edgerunners protagonist David is still dead—and will provide 'a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge' across its 10-episode run. The logline for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II asks, 'When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?' The original centered on David's transformation into an Edgerunner after surviving a drive-by shooting and gets a powerful spinal implant. Along with critical acclaim for its writing and animation, it's been remembered for its pretty brutal ending, which left David and nearly every other main character dead by the end of their adventure. But if you thought that was bad, Sztybor teased things would get even worse for this new set of characters. 'I just wanted to make the whole world sad,' he said during Friday's panel. 'When people are sad, I'm a bit happy. This new season will be, of course, sadder, but it will be also darker, more bloody, and more raw.' Edgerunners II will be directed by Kai Ikarashi, who helmed the original's sixth episode 'Girl on Fire' and previously worked on Delicious in Dungeon and Mob Psycho 100. No word on when Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II will arrive, but luckily, there's some stuff to tide you over. There's a manga prequel all about supporting character Rebecca, and the show's co-protagonist Lucy joins Guilty Gear Strive later this summer. CD Projekt Red Announces ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2' at Anime Expo
CD Projekt Red is returning to the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners universe with a new stand-alone entry, which the game developer announced alongside the anime series' showrunner during a panel at Anime Expo on Friday. The video game developer will once again partner with the animation studio Trigger for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which, like its predecessor, will stream on Netflix.
