Wales team unharmed but cancel Euro 2025 training after bus crash
Wales coach Rhian Wilkinson said her players were shaken but otherwise fine after their bus crashed on the way to Stadion St Gallen for training on Tuesday ahead of their Women's Euro 2025 match against France. Wilkinson, who was in a separate vehicle along with skipper Angharad James, said that the well-being of her players was the priority ahead of Wednesday's game. "Yeah, football is secondary and I think, yes we are shaken because we are away from the team right now knowing that they've had to experience that," Wilkinson told a press conference. "But equally we have a great group and I have been assured that everyone is fine. We have practiced for the unexpected, that's what we can call this. "We will check in with everyone and make sure they are all in a good spot and we can focus on the football again after that. Our priority is to get them all together and away from the scene. We'll be checking in to make sure they all continue to be OK." Wilkinson said the crash happened near the team hotel. "All passengers on the Cymru National Team bus and in the other vehicle are unharmed," The Football Association of Wales said in a statement. "The FAW's priority has been to remove the players from the scene and return to the Cymru training base to complete their preparations for tomorrow's match." Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Newport shows support for Wales at the Women's Euros
The EUROs are the sporting event of the summer, and it's made even more special by the fact that 2025 marks the first year that Cymru's Women have ever qualified for a major tournament. The names of the squad that defied all the odds are displayed proudly on the back of the shirt, representing those who will take to the field this weekend and play for their country. The 'Ein Crys Cymru' tour celebrates the Cymru National Team's higher purpose, 'to play for change. To play to inspire. For Us. For Them. For Her.' which honours the trailblazers who fought for the creation our women's national team, the current heroes wearing the shirt today, and the future generations still to come. The tour began at the foot of Yr Wyddfa, marking the announcement of Cymru's EUROs squad and the beginning of a monumental moment for the women's squad. The shirt is an important reminder of how far the women's squad has come (Image: NQ)Former Cymru Captain and UEFA Vice President, Professor Laura McAllister CBE said: 'I played for Cymru during a time when having our own kit felt like a luxury. The progress we've made since then is extraordinary, and we can see how much more we can still achieve together. 'The Cymru shirt is more than just fabric, it offers a badge of honour, and this national tour gives us all a moment to reflect, to celebrate, and to show every girl in Wales that they belong in football.' It marks a huge turning point for the women's squad, who until recent years found themselves borrowing their ill-fitting kit from the men's squad. It then wasn't until 2019 that Cymru's women players saw their own names proudly printed on the back of their shirts, representing a landmark moment of recognition and representation for the squad. It's an incredibly powerful symbol of how far the women's game has come in recent years and only creates excitement for where it could go in future. Cymru Captain, Angharad James said: 'When I put on this shirt, it represents every woman who paved the way for us and those who fought to get us here. 'This Cymru team has earned its place on the biggest stage, and we'll wear this shirt with pride. This shirt belongs to all of us, and we want every person in Wales to feel part of our journey to Switzerland.' Cymru will find themselves facing off in Group D against previous champions Netherlands, underdogs France and current champions England. Cymru's campaign begins at 5PM on Saturday 5 July when the team takes on Netherlands in Lucerne, Switzerland.
