Inside Senate Dems' summer warpath against Trump
Senate Democrats held more than 100 events railing against Republican policies in the first week of their summer recess, part of a coordinated push to drive down GOP approval ahead of the 2026 midterms. Why it matters: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) deployed similar tactics on the campaign trail last year, when his Democrats significantly outperformed the rest of the party in the general election. Schumer wants his caucus to localize the impact of policies Trump and the Republican Congress have embraced in Washington — specifically cuts to health care, tariffs, rising energy costs and tax cuts for the wealthy. The events have included town halls, hospital visits and huddles with small business owners, along with visits to food banks and to local businesses. Schumer blitzed upstate New York last week to start the recess and is continuing to travel the state this week. The big picture: Democrats want to capitalize on the unpopularity of Trump's massive tax and spending cut bill, which is underwater with voters, according to polling. On Mediciad, Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) said following an event in Door County last week that she is "taking this fight to every corner of our state." Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.) said last week following a roundtable in his state that Trump's tariff policies were "pulverizing" small businesses. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) warned that Trump's marquee tax cut bill is creating a "perfect storm" that will lead to higher electricity bills. Between the lines: Democrats' chances in the 2026 midterms rest largely on whether they can effectively frame Trump and GOP policies as harmful, as they work to rebuild following significant losses in 2024. The hyper-local focus also gives Senate Democrats an opportunity to build a brand and reputation that is independent of the national Democratic Party, which remains deeply unpopular in recent polling. Party insiders attribute that strategy to the success last year of lawmakers like Baldwin and Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), who won seats for Democrats in states that Trump carried.

Shaheen, Tillis and Bennet tour Ukraine amid Trump peace push
Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) all recently took a trip to Ukraine according to a page on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee's website. The senators finished the visit to Ukraine's capital city, Kyiv, on Monday, according to the page. The Colorado, New Hampshire and North Carolina lawmakers also went to Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv that experienced mass atrocities that happened within the beginning weeks of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. 'Our delegation saw firsthand how Ukraine is holding the Russian military at bay at the gates of Europe,' Shaheen, the Foreign Relations Committee's ranking member, said on the page. 'Bolstering Ukraine's leverage in this critical time means ending the U.S. self-imposed blockade of U.S. assistance, ensuring lasting security guarantees for Ukraine, taking advantage of Russia's near economic collapse by imposing more sanctions and holding Vladimir Putin to account for the atrocities he has committed against humanity,' she added. President Trump has been recently moving to end Russia's war in Ukraine. Russian and U.S. officials are set for a discussion Tuesday in Saudi Arabia aimed at searching for a resolution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also recently said that Ukraine has intelligence that Russian President Vladimir Putin is getting ready for possible military operations in Belarus and advised against NATO's weakening. 'Our delegation's visit to Ukraine was a stark reminder of the bravery of the Ukrainian people in their fight against Russia's unprovoked invasion,' Tillis said on the committee page. 'It's clear that we must focus on securing a long-term peace agreement to end this war and ensure Ukraine's sovereignty is respected. 'To do that, the U.S. must continue supporting Ukraine's ability to defend itself and enable them to negotiate from a position of strength,' he added. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. American and Russian officials hold talks to end war without Ukraine
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Top American and Russian officials are expected to meet in Saudi Arabia Tuesday to try to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine but notably absent in these peace talks, Ukraine and its key European allies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed he will not accept the terms of any agreement without his country's participation. 'Of course they have to be at the table,' said Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.). In Kyiv Monday U.S. senators were adamant Ukrainians would be involved in negotiations to end the war Russia started with them. 'I don't believe any agreement can be done behind Ukraine's back,' said Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.). Democratic Senator Michael Bennet and Republican Senator Thom Tillis say an upcoming meeting between American and Russian officials is just the beginning. 'I don't think we believe any just peace can be reached without the participation and leadership of Ukraine, without the participation of Europe,' said Bennet. The meeting with Ukraine notably absent has already sent shockwaves throughout Europe with France calling an emergency meeting of European Union countries and the U.K. Monday. 'We're trying to get peace with Russia and Ukraine, and we're working very hard on it,' said Trump. President Donald Trump's reversal on U.S. policy toward Ukraine is raising concerns across the globe that Russia will get the better deal, but the president insists both countries will be involved. 'They want to end it fast, both of them,' said Trump. Senators say they also want the war to end but stress Russia cannot be emboldened to expand its interests. 'Vladimir Putin is not going to stop in Ukraine,' said Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.). The talks between the U.S. and Russia are expected to tee up an in-person meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
