Two arrested over effigy of PM at Pas-led rally
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested two men in connection with the circulation of a video depicting an effigy resembling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim brought to the Pas-led rally, which took place here on Saturday.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said communication devices believed to have been used to upload and distribute information related to the incident were also seized when the police arrested the suspects, aged between 21 and 47.
"A remand application for the suspects arrested will be made," he said in a statement.
Khalid said police are investigating rally participants who brought and whipped an effigy resembling the prime minister, in which the act was recorded and uploaded to social media by certain parties.
He added the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act, Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit, D5 Division of Bukit Aman's Criminal Investigation Department.
Khalid said the public is advised to be responsible social media users and not to use it as a platform for incitement that could lead to disharmony and disrupt public order.
"Firm action without compromise will be taken against any individuals who deliberately threaten public peace and security."
Earlier today, acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad confirmed that police had launched an investigation into the case.
