Police record statement from DAP youth chief over satirical social media post

IPOH: Police have recorded the statement of DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong to assist in investigations regarding a social media post featuring a caricature of Perak opposition leader Razman Zakaria. Acting Gerik district police chief Deputy Superintendent Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah confirmed the matter when contacted today. "Yes, a statement was recorded. It is part of the investigation process," he said briefly. Earlier today, Woo, who is also the Perak State Executive Councillor for Domestic Trade, Consumer Affairs and New Villages, in a press conference said he had given his statement to the police following a report lodged against him over a Facebook post from April featuring a clown-themed caricature of Razman. Lawyer Syahredzan Johan, who is representing Woo, said two investigating officers from the Gerik district police headquarters visited the Exco Office at the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building to record the statement, which lasted about 30 minutes, starting at 10.50am. "All the questions were answered. We fully cooperated," he said during a press conference at the Perak DAP headquarters today. Syahredzan said police also seized Woo's iPhone and SIM card for further investigation. Meanwhile, Woo described the police report lodged against him as an unhealthy political culture and an attempt to stifle freedom of expression. He claimed that political satire, including caricatures, does not constitute a personal attack but is instead a form of public oversight. "As a politician, I defend everyone's right to criticise me, and at the same time, I also have the right to respond rather than stay silent," he said. Previously, Razman had demanded that Woo issue a public apology during the Perak State Legislative Assembly session over the publication of provocative content targeting him, which was posted on social media on April 10. However, Woo stood by his action, arguing that the caricature was a form of satire based on facts — one of the cornerstones of democracy.

Cops seize Perak exco man's phone over caricature of PAS leader

DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong is being investigated for improper use of network facilities and criminal defamation. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A Perak executive councillor's phone and SIM card have been confiscated by police in connection with a probe into an allegedly offensive caricature of state opposition leader Razman Zakaria of PAS. DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong is being investigated for improper use of network facilities under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and criminal defamation under Section 500 of the Penal Code, according to his lawyer, Syahredzan Johan. Syahredzan said the police report was likely made by one of Razman's aides in Gerik. 'Woo has given his statement to the police and we will give our fullest cooperation,' he told FMT. Woo had posted the caricature on Facebook alongside a statement in April. It depicted Razman as a clown riding a unicycle on a tightrope, while labelling the Perak PAS chief as 'raja fitnah' ('king of slander'). This is believed to be in reference to the various instances Razman had apologised to multiple Pakatan Harapan leaders over various accusations he made against them. The PAS man has since demanded that Woo apologise openly for the 'provocative' posting. In a statement, Woo stood by his Facebook post by saying it was not a personal attack but satire. He also said the police report stifled freedom of speech. Woo, the Perak domestic trade executive councillor, said it was his duty to challenge false rhetoric, even through satire. 'Freedom of expression must include the freedom to offend. Satire is a legitimate and peaceful form of political critique in any democracy,' said the Pasir Bedamar assemblyman.

Domestic LPG ban in eateries will burden consumers, DAP Youth warns

DAP Youth has urged the government to postpone a ban on the use of household liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in eateries, warning that the move could burden consumers as food operators will be forced to raise their prices. DAP Youth public policy bureau chief Jason Ng highlighted that the price of commercial LPG is nearly three times higher than its domestic counterpart, with many small eateries and hawkers still relying on subsidised gas to conduct their businesses.

MCA Beliawanis asks DAP Youth to jointly lodge MACC report over MyKiosk issue

MCA Beliawanis chairman Ivone Low. PETALING JAYA: MCA Beliawanis has called on DAP Youth to lodge a joint report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the MyKiosk 2.0 project, urging transparency over the bidding process and project costs. MCA Beliawanis chairman Ivone Low said that the public deserves to know whether the project under the Housing and Local Government Ministry went through an open tender, the actual cost involved, site selection criteria and other details. "To date, the minister concerned, who is from DAP, has failed to come forward with an explanation. DAP leaders have also been seen defending the project by claiming that many traders are eager to rent the MyKiosks. Furthermore, some have said that MCA leaders are also implicated in this controversy. "Therefore, as a party that prioritises the rights and interests of citizens, we hope DAP Youth will stand with us on this issue in the pursuit of truth," she said in a statement on Sunday (May 18). Low expressed hope that pressure from both MCA Beliawanis and DAP Youth would prompt the MACC to act swiftly to investigate whether there are elements of corruption and abuse of power behind the MyKiosk project, and that the findings are reported transparently in order to restore public confidence in the government. On Friday, the Malaysia Corruption Watch (MCW) called on the National Audit Department to conduct a detailed audit into the costs and implementation of the MyKiosk 2.0 project. Its president Jais Abdul Karim said the MACC should also investigate potential abuse of power related to the project, noting that a 62 sq ft MyKiosk 2.0 unit costs RM25,000, while a 700 sq ft People's Housing Project (PPR) unit is priced at just RM35,000. He pointed out that PPR units, complete with three bedrooms and basic amenities, cost just RM50 per square foot, while the much smaller MyKiosk 2.0 units are priced at nearly RM403 per square foot, raising concerns about value for money. Jais added that while the ministry has justified the RM25,000 cost as being due to design improvements for small traders, this should be backed by transparent cost breakdowns and procurement documents. He also called on the government to prioritise affordable housing. Earlier, the ministry, through its official Facebook page, explained that the RM25,000 cost for each MyKiosk 2.0 unit reflects several upgrades over the earlier MyKiosk 1.0 model, which was priced at RM15,000 each. According to the ministry, the newer units include larger solar panels to support higher-capacity electrical devices, enhanced LED lighting and improved design for better trader comfort. The ministry noted that MyKiosk 1.0 had an occupancy rate of 84.35%, which prompted the continuation of the project with these improvements. Additionally, the ministry said the procurement for MyKiosk 2.0 was handled at the local council level through an open quotation process involving registered contractors. It added that 446 contractors have been appointed by 96 local councils nationwide to supply the upgraded units, emphasising that the process was clear and properly managed. The ministry also revealed that local councils nationwide had appointed 795 contractors to manage the procurement and placement of MyKiosk units.

DAP fanning racial sentiments? Look in the mirror, Sanusi told

DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong said PAS has no right to accuse others of playing up racial issues. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : DAP Youth has hit back at claims the party has been fanning racial sentiments, as alleged by PAS's Sanusi Nor, citing the many controversial statements by leaders from the Islamic party. The wing's chief, Woo Kah Leong, alluded to claims by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang that non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras were at the root of corruption. Woo also referred to claims by PAS MP Siti Mastura Muhammad, who had to pay damages of more than RM800,000 after she was convicted of defaming three DAP leaders by linking them to the late Communist Party of Malaya leader Chin Peng in her election speeches. He also alluded to claims by PAS that Malaysians were waving China's flag despite the police confirming that only Chinese nationals were involved. 'As experts in fanning racial issues, PAS has no right to accuse others of doing so,' he said in a statement. Last night, Sanusi, the Perikatan Nasional election director, accused DAP of fanning racial sentiments when denying that his party PAS and Bersatu had done so. 'DAP is a dangerous party. It is chauvinistic and racist. Despite the image they try to portray, history has shown that since DAP was established, temperatures have risen,' he was quoted as saying at a ceramah in Bidor, Perak.
