Watch Live: Detroit City FC vs. Phoenix Rising FC

Detroit City Football Club heads west this Saturday evening to take on Western Conference opponent Phoenix Rising FC. Kickoff from Phoenix Rising Soccer Stadium is set for 10 p.m. and will be broadcast locally on CW Detroit 50 (WKBD-TV). For Michigan residents, the match is free to stream on DCFC comes into this match after a 0-0 draw against Monterey Bay FC last Saturday afternoon. Both teams came close to breaking the deadlock during the 90 minutes, but both goalkeepers were impressive and maintained a clean sheet, resulting in DCFC's second home draw of 2025. Following his impressive three-save clean sheet performance on Saturday, goalkeeper Carlos Herrera earned USL Championship Team of the Week honors for week five. In addition to the three saves, Herrera recorded 11 recoveries and completed 75% of his passes in a scoreless draw against his former club. As Le Rouge heads out on the road once again this weekend, it is already their fourth road match of the young six-week season. So far, Detroit has picked up six out of a possible nine points, with the 2-0 loss to Louisville City being the only time they have dropped points away from home. Phoenix Rising comes into this match with a 1-2-2 record to start the season. Last weekend, Rising picked up their first three points of the season in a 2-1 road victory against San Antonio FC. Phoenix would take the lead off a Rémi Cabral converted penalty in the 60th minute. San Antonio leveled the match with their own converted penalty five minutes later. Jearl Margaritha would score the only non-penalty of the match in the 68th minute to give Phoenix the victory. Even though it is early in the season, striker Rémi Cabral is again the club's leading scorer and is looking to continue that. With three goals in five matches, Cabral is already only four goals away from tying his team-high tally from last season. These two sides have faced off twice since DCFC joined the USL Championship in 2022. Last season at Keyworth, they played to a 1-1 draw. Ben Morris scored the opening goal in the ninth minute, but Giulio Doratiotto leveled the match in the 49th minute. The only time they played in Phoenix, Rising walked away with a 5-0 victory in 2023. Le Rouge returns to Keyworth Stadium next Wednesday evening for third-round action of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Kickoff against USL League One side Westchester SC is set for 7 pm. League play continues at Keyworth Stadium on Saturday, April 19, as DCFC takes on Eastern Conference rival Rhode Island FC. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Tickets for all Detroit City matches are available at For more information about Detroit City FC, visit and follow @DetroitCityFC on X and Facebook and @detroitcityfootballclub on Instagram. This Brand Now Promises Five-Minute EV Charging

BYD reveals its megawatt charging system (MCS) for its passenger cars, promising a gain of 249 miles of range in just five minutes at up to 1,000 kW. The BYD Tang L SUV and Han L sedan will be the first new models to take advantage of these charging speeds. The automaker's MCS relies on an updated Blade battery design, but also on appropriate charging infrastructure that has yet to be built at scale. You may have heard of megawatt-level charging for electric trucks, but until now the tech did not seem all that realistic for passenger cars, even though it promised charging sessions well below 10 minutes. That's just what Chinese automaker BYD unveiled this week thanks to its Super e-Platform that's going into production this year. And it promises to be quite reasonably priced, at least if you live where you'll be able to take advantage of it. The main promise of this tech, based on BYD's updated Blade battery, are charging speeds of up to 1,000 kW. This will permit an EV to gain about 400 kilometers, or nearly 250 miles of range, in just five minutes. By comparison, the quickest DC fast-chargers in the US usually serve up to 350 kW—if you can find them and if your EV can even handle it. And at the moment, there aren't many models offered in North America that can take advantage of anything above the 300-kW mark. BYD's first two models that will be able to take advantage of this tech will be the Tang L SUV, which will start at just over $37,000, and the Han L sedan that will wear an identical sticker. Of course, the batteries themselves are just one part of the equation. The other part is having enough infrastructure to make megawatt charging somewhat commonplace and affordable compared to slower charging systems. BYD has indicated that it intends to build over 4,000 chargers in China that will be able to serve up these speeds, in an ambitious infrastructure undertaking. However, in doing so BYD will be effectively competing against another existing technology that can "recharge" an EV in mere minutes. Competitor brand Nio has been building battery swap stations in China and in Europe for the past few years, while welcoming other automakers to its common battery swap standard. The swap process itself, after a car enters a carwash-like station, also takes just a few minutes, with the station keeping a collection of spare batteries inside that are slowly recharged and readied for the next cars. This solution also serves up automatic recharges as quick as a fuel fill up, while not needing to deliver crazy levels of power in mere minutes, thereby lessening the station's impact on the grid. In fact, the relatively modest power requirements of such stations are cited as one of their advantages, compared to DCFC stations. Megawatt charging systems (MCS) for battery-electric semi trucks have already seen a limited rollout in Europe, with plans to build such stations along busy trucking routes where trucks with north of 500 kWh of batteries on board will be able to get juiced up in under an hour. However, such stations are bound to remain rare for the foreseeable future, as are trucks that can cope with with power (and the prices) of such charging speeds. So we're not holding our breath to see MCS stations blasting small European hatchbacks with 1,000 kW anytime soon. Ultimately, the range wars may promise EV shoppers the convenience of lightning-quick recharges, provided they're at the right station to take advantage of it. But they also tend to overlook the fact that most EVs will still be charging at much slower and affordable speeds at home, overnight. Are charging speeds still one of the main issues holding back greater EV adoption in the US, or are other factors like the ability to find EV charging stations, or EV prices, more important at the moment? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

EVgo Teams Up with This Automaker on DCFC Stations in California

Toyota and EVgo launch the first of a series of co-branded DC fast-charging stations, as part of its Empact agenda announced in 2023 aiming to bring stations to underserved communities. The first co-branded stations have spots for eight cars, with each stall featuring 350-kW chargers. The DCFC stations will be operated and owned by EVgo. Two years after Toyota revealed its "Empact" agenda to improve EV charging in underserved communities, the automaker along with EVgo opened the first of a series of DC fast-charging stations in Sacramento and in Baldwin Park, California. Each of the co-branded stations can charge eight EVs at the same time, and each stall will feature 350-kW fast chargers. The stations will still be operated and owned by EVgo. The new stations themselves will be located in areas where there are ample choices for restaurants, grocery stores, and other types of shopping, so unlike in the early years of EV charging these stations won't be tucked away in some obscure corner of a mall parking lot. Toyota's Empact plan has focused on three main pillars in bringing DC fast-charging to communities that had often been overlooked in the early years of EV station development: providing affordable mobility solutions, access to EV charging, and reducing carbon emissions. "Our vision will be our guide as we work with local and state officials to identify communities where Empact might help address issues related to EV charging access and affordability," Christopher Reynolds, executive vice president and chief administrative officer, Corporate Resources, Toyota Motor North America, said at the time of Empact plan's launch. As part of this effort Toyota has been working with cities to find badly needed and particularly suitable locations, including those near multi-family housing, that might have been largely ignored a decade ago. In announcing the Empact plan, the automaker also noted that DC fast-charging often costs up to three times the rate of charging at home with a slower system. Overall, station-building efforts are slowly entering a different era, with more focus on driver convenience if not an actual convenience store on the site of a charging station. Stations operators are still skeptical of building new on-site retail, aside from a few experiments with vending machines. Various station developers still rely on existing, nearby restaurants and shopping locations, skipping typical gas station features like bathrooms and a protective canopy over the chargers. So some corners and costs are still being cut at many stations when it comes to protection from weather and other convenience and safety features, even though solar canopies are slowly being adopted by a handful of station builders with the capability to add energy to battery energy storage systems (BESS). "Together with EVgo, we are supporting broader access to charging infrastructure for all battery EV drivers, including those driving Toyota and Lexus BEVs," said Toyota Motor North America's General Manager of EV Charging Solutions, James George. It will take some time to feel the impact of Toyota and EVgo's initiative, and it will also take some time for American buyers to try Toyota EVs that aren't the bZ4X. The EV era is just getting started for Toyota in the US. Is charging infrastructure the main barrier to EV adoption at the moment, or is it other factors like the prices of new EVs?
