Unique number, QR code to aid house tracing, emergency services

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recently begun installation of permanent digital door number (DDN) plates on houses across the city, with the DDN and QR code set to ease house search and facilitate emergency services, officials said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now BMC officers said just by putting the unique number or scanning the QR code inscribed on the DDN plate, emergency services can reach their doorsteps. The civic body is in the process of developing an app with assistance from a private agency so that DDN can be used to access any location. Moreover, integration of data like holding tax and water tax will help BMC find out their status by just accessing the DDN. The DDN project was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, officials said. However, BMC has targeted to complete in another six months the installation of tin DDN plates in front of houses which were enumerated earlier during a survey. Then, a paper chit (a replica of the tin plates being affixed now) was pasted on around 1 lakh households. "Those households, which had been given paper chits, are now being allotted the permanent DDN plates. If someone wants to visit a house in the city, all that he/she can do is access the DDN, put the number in the app and it will help locate the area. The DDN has been geo-tagged," said BMC deputy commissioner Ajay Mohanty. In respect of holding tax — assessed and collected annually on the basis of plinth area of residential and commercial buildings — DDN will be the key to access to the houseowner's details such as total tax, pending dues, house location and address. "Not only holding tax, trade licence, water tax and for other utility services, DDN will be useful to keep track of everything," Mohanty said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now BMC is also planning to fast-track a second phase of the survey to cover the remaining 1.12 lakh households. "DDN will also help track down tax defaulters when all buildings are fully covered. Each household will be separately identified and there will be no overlapping or possibility of evasion," said a BMC officer.
