‘Anora' Isn't the Only Oscar Contender on an Upswing

With a victory for Best Original Screenplay win for 'Anora' at the Writers Guild Awards 2025, it certifies the Sean Baker film as the top contender for Best Picture, even if fellow Oscar nominees 'The Substance,' 'September 5,' and 'The Brutalist' were ineligible for the award having not been written by guild members or under a WGA collective bargaining agreement. 'Anora' had already won top prize at the PGA Awards and DGA Awards the previous weekend, with its Critics Choice Award for Best Film being a nice bonus. The only other film to win over those guilds and the WGA yet not win Best Picture is 'Brokeback Mountain' in 2006. The major harbinger indicating that the Ang Lee movie would not prevail at the Oscars was 'Crash' winning Best Ensemble at the SAG Awards, so a win at that particular awards body in the coming week is crucial to the Neon release's dominant awards campaign. More from IndieWire 'Nosferatu,' 'Conclave,' and 'Wicked' Win at the 2025 ADG Awards 'The Substance,' 'Wicked,' and 'The Last Showgirl' Win at the 2025 MUAHS Awards All that said, there is another Best Picture nominee that has been on a significant upswing stemming from these guild awards, which are happening concurrently with final Oscar voting. That film is 'Nickel Boys.' The Orion Pictures release directed by RaMell Ross won both Best Adapted Screenplay at the WGA Awards and the Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film at the DGA Awards. Although Ross is not nominated for Best Director at the Oscars, he is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside Joslyn Barnes, who is also one of the producers nominated for Best Picture on behalf of the film. The other two are Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner of Plan B Entertainment. However, it's more notable in this category that fellow Oscar nominees 'Sing Sing,' 'Emilia Pérez,' and 'Conclave' were ineligible at the WGAs. That's because 'Conclave,' the papal election drama written by Peter Straughan, adapting the Robert Harris novel of the same name, has been the category frontrunner thus far. Straughn won both the Critics Choice Award and the Golden Globe, but has yet to win an award voted on by people in the Academy. But that should change soon, as Straughan is expected to win at the BAFTAs on Sunday. What could ultimately determine which film wins the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar isn't the BAFTAs but the USC Scripter Awards, a prize that's leaning toward 'Nickel Boys.' That awards body is on a hot streak, having predicted the last two Oscar winners, including 'American Fiction' and 'Women Talking.' Coincidentally, both of those films also happened to be Orion Pictures releases. 'Conclave' though is not to be counted out, even though the WGA Awards have predicted the last four Best Adapted Screenplay winners in a row, as it is an incredibly popular film. But the other statistic that should cause the film some concern is that it has been seven years since the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay was not awarded to the film's director. If his reception at the DGA Awards, where all five Best Director nominees stood up to cheer him on, was any indication, Ross and his film 'Nickel Boys' have the most momentum as Oscar voting begins to wrap. Kanye West's X Account Deactivated After He Declared 'IM A NAZI' In Deluge Of Antisemitism

Kanye West's Twitter/X account has been deactivated after critics have decried his 'antisemitic rampage' on Elon Musk's social media platform. On Monday morning, West's page was replaced with the message: 'This account doesn't exist.' It is not clear if West deleted the account himself or if he was removed from the social media network. Before exiting X today, West had been active during Super Bowl Sunday, including ranting about images of Taylor Swift dancing on television. West's account was slapped with a 'potentially sensitive content' warning message. Musk said: 'Given what he has posted, his account is now classified as NSFW [not safe for work]. You should not be seeing that anymore.' West, 47, later wrote: 'I'm logging out of Twitter. I appreciate Elon for allowing me to vent. It has been very cathartic to use the world as a sounding board.' The latest deactivation comes after West — known as Ye — posted a series of antisemitic posts, including declaring himself to be a Nazi. The comments prompted an outpouring of condemnation from critics including David Schwimmer and Piers Morgan. 'IM A NAZI,' he wrote over the weekend. 'I LOVE HITLER NOW WHAT BITCHES.' In another all-caps missive, he added: 'SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE JEWISH AND I DONT TRUST ANY OF THEM.' Schwimmer said: 'We can't stop a deranged bigot from spewing hate filled, ignorant bile… but we CAN stop giving him a megaphone, Mr. Musk. Kanye West has 32.7 million followers on your platform, X. That's twice as many people than the number of Jews in existence. His sick hate speech results in REAL LIFE violence against Jews. 'I don't know what's worse, the fact that he identifies as a Nazi (which implies he wants to exterminate ALL marginalized communities including his own) or the fact that there is not sufficient OUTRAGE to remove and ban him from all social media at this point. Silence is complicity.' The American Jewish Committee condemned West for continuing to 'purposefully use his platform to spew anti-Jewish hatred,' while the Campaign Against Antisemitism described it as an 'antisemitic rampage.' Morgan said: 'So disappointed that Kanye West has deleted his X account… said nobody. From genius rap superstar to demented, vile, racist, anti-Semitic, misogynist, violence-inducing troll. What a sad, pathetic downfall.' Judd Apatow Weighs in on ‘It Ends With Us' Drama at DGA Awards: 'So Much Hazarai Over Such a Terrible Movie'

Judd Apatow, returning on Saturday night to host his sixth DGA Awards, brought his signature roasting style to this year's nominated films, the It Ends With Us legal drama and, of course, the Trump Administration. Telling the crowd, 'I'm what Mel Brooks would look like if he took The Substance,' as he arrived on stage at the Beverly Hilton, Apatow acknowledged how Francis Ford Coppola and Kevin Costner had both spent fortunes making passion projects that bombed at the box office. 'Imagine being Kevin Costner's kids and realizing you don't get a trust fund, but you do get to watch Horizon one and two whenever you like,' he teased. More from The Hollywood Reporter PGA Awards: Winners List (Updating Live) DGA Awards: Winners List (Updating Live) 'El 47' and 'Undercover' Top 2025 Goya Awards: Complete Winners List He commented how Wicked, on the other hand, had done so well at the box office, and 'usually to make that much money you have to sue Blake Lively,' as the audience broke out in laughter in referencing the ongoing legal battle between Lively and Justin Baldoni following It Ends With Us. 'So much hazarai over such a terrible movie.' And in the case of Emilia Pérez, Apatow joked, 'Hollywood hasn't had a new idea in decades and then suddenly we cram all of them into one fucking movie.' He added that it was the 'first movie that Trump is trying to deport,' and called Conclave 'a prequel to Spotlight.' Diving into politics, Apatow told the crowd, 'There are some of you in this room who voted for [Donald] Trump — I won't judge you but God will,' and said, 'I'm getting very depressed, to deal with it I just started microdosing meth. My new pronouns are we're fucked.' He also mused about how he 'should start making movies and TV that MAGA people would like, like The Real Housewives of Jan. 6 or Extreme Home Makeover: Gaza edition,' or questioned if Hollywood should go even woker, like 'Dune 3 with all gay sandworms' or 'The Amazing Spider-Person.' Apatow also noted how Elon Musk recently posted a meme from Step Brothers, which he produced, with a picture of John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell with the caption 'Did we just become best friends?' 'He wrote, 'This is me and Jeff Bezos,'' Apatow said. 'I thought, 'I don't think he really understands the premise of that film. It's about two fucking morons.'' The filmmaker closed out his monologue by declaring a hope that Musk, Trump and their billionaire supporters go off to colonize Mars, and Earth begins to return to normal. Sean Baker Takes DGA Awards Top Prize For ‘Anora' – How This Could Predict Oscars

Sean Baker has won the DGA top prize – Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film – for Anora. And if past statistics are a signifier of what's to come, this is a major indicator for the Oscars Best Director category. 'My imposter syndrome is skyrocketing right now, as well as my cortisol levels,' Baker said, as he accepted the award. 'It's such an honor to be recognized by my peers.' Production, Reveals 'Deeply Painful' Experience Of Losing Home In Fires – DGA Awards PGA Awards: 'SNL', 'Hacks' And 'The Wild Robot' Among Winners (Updating Live) He thanked his directorial team, cast and crew, NEON, the DGA and his producers Samantha Quan and Alex Coco. 'Obviously I've tortured you and I'm so sorry,' he said. 'They were able to pull off a $6 million film shot on film in New York City in 2023—almost an impossibilty.' RELATED: Baker gave props to his my cast 'that put everything into it,' especially Mikey Madison, who plays the lead role of Ani (Anora), alongside Yura Borisov, Mark Eydelshteyn, Karren Karagulian and Vache Tovmasyan, in the film about a young woman working in a New York strip club who impulsively marries a younger, rich client, only to find out he is the son of a Russian oligarch, and his family are less than pleased by the union. RELATED: 'Working with [Madison] has changed the way I will be directing actors in the future, because of what she gave,' Baker said. 'Hearing her incredible ideas… a year before production, what she wanted to bring to the production and what she did bring to it. [She has] an incredible career ahead.' Baker recalled knowing he wanted to be a director when he saw the burning window sequence from 1931's Frankenstein. 'The next morning I told my mother I wanted to be a director,' he said. 'My mother supported me the whole way. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm making the movies she wanted me to make. I don't think she's seen Anora, I don't want her to see Anora.' So what does this mean for Baker and Anora's Oscar chances? The film has six nominations there. 19 of the last 22 DGA Theatrical Feature winners have gone on to win Best Director at Oscar. To put it another way, since the DGA Awards' began awarding this category in 1948, only eight DGA winners in this category did not go on to win Best Director at Oscar. So closely correlated are these two that their annual five nominees often match. This year, four of the five DGA nominees are the same as the Academy's picks for Best Director: Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, Sean Baker for Anora, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, and James Mangold for A Complete Unknown. The exception being DGA-nominee Edward Berger for Conclave — he was not included in the Best Director nominations at Oscar (Coralie Fargeat is in the fifth spot for The Substance). Four out of the five DGA picks also matched Oscar Best Director nominees in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. And in the history of the Academy Awards, there are only six instances when a Best Picture winner did not have a Best Director Nomination: Wings (1927/28), Grand Hotel (1931/32), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), Argo (2012), Green Book (2018), and CODA (2021). Anora also took home the top prize of Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards Friday night, which only serves to increase its Oscar chances. The Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on March 2nd.
