Bill Hader reveals why he turned down 'SNL50' appearance

Where was Bill Hader at "SNL50"? The comedian is getting real about his absence. In an appearance on "Late Night With Seth Meyers," Hader revealed he was invited to participate in the 50th anniversary special of "Saturday Night Live," which aired in February, but he turned it down. According to Hader, who starred on "SNL" from 2005 to 2013, Andy Samberg asked him to star in a pre-recorded digital short about how everyone suffers from anxiety while working at "SNL." Ironically, he declined because of his anxiety. "When he told me about it, I was like, 'I don't know if I want to do that,' " Hader said. "He's like, 'Why?' I'm like, 'Because I'm anxious! I don't want to do it.' He was like, 'Come on, man! What do you mean?' " Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox Hader's role in the short wound up being played by "SNL" star Bowen Yang instead. "He was great," Hader told Meyers. "But, no, that was true. I was really shaky and everything. I was really anxious." The digital short began with Samberg calling Yang, who says he's not going to go to the "SNL" 50th anniversary special because the show gives him anxiety. Samberg then launches into a song about how "everyone who ever worked at 'SNL' had anxiety." Hader's absence on "SNL50" was notable, given that the special brought back many of its most famous performers throughout the years, from Bill Murray to Eddie Murphy. A representative for the "Barry" star previously told Variety that he did not attend the live show because of a "long-standing scheduling conflict." 'It doesn't seem real': Bill Hader 'in shock' after Los Angeles home survives wildfires Hader has opened up about his struggles with anxiety in the past. Speaking to GQ in 2018, he said that "doing that show was really hard for me," and the outlet reported that Hader used to "stand backstage hyperventilating and staring at the floor." See the pics: Ali Wong and Bill Hader go red carpet official at DGA Awards "It was this funny thing of being trapped by this thing that was hurting you," he told GQ. "I had to go to a therapist and do meditation − all these things to try to calm my nerves. It was becoming really detrimental for my performing." In his Aug. 5 "Late Night" appearance, Hader recalled how he would be "trembling" and "anxious" when going out on stage at "SNL" − in contrast to Meyers, who would be calm and collected even if something went wrong. Hader wasn't the only "SNL" alum who skipped the 50th anniversary special. After fans wondered why Dan Aykroyd didn't make an appearance, the comedian recently told Entertainment Weekly he preferred to watch the show at home. "I knew if I was there, I'd be in a dressing room, I'd be working," he said. "I wanted to see it live. I'm a fan of the show today, and I watch it all the time. I love these new players; I think they're just great. I just wanted to see and live nostalgically with my family in my own home, eating my own popcorn."

Nicola Peltz Beckham to star in dramatic new thriller with star-studded cast

Nicola Peltz Beckham, Jazzy De Lisser and Mary Stuart Masterson have began filming a dramatic thriller penned and directed by multiple DGA Award nominee Erica Dunton. Nicola Peltz Beckham is part of a new star-studded cast for a dramatic thriller. Pretty Ugly is penned and helmed by Erica Dunton, a contender for multiple DGA Awards and known for her work on Ted Lasso. ‌ The 30-year-old will star alongside Jazzy De Lisser (Too Much), and Mary Stuart Masterson (Fried Green Tomatoes). Pretty Ugly delves into the life of Raelynn (De Lisser), a young woman entranced by the allure of social media beauty, alongside her mum who shares an obsession with true crime podcasts. ‌ Their bond starts to fray when a challenging makeup influencer (Nicola Peltz) makes her way back to Winnabow from LA, leading to a confrontation with a murder and a deeper understanding of the American Dream for all three women. ‌ The film has been described by Erica as "a movie for this moment, a character-driven murder mystery that highlights the depths to which the internet is changing the face of every town in America." The cast is completed by Michelle Gomez, Andy Buckley, Cullen Moss, Paul Schneider, Edgar de Santiago, and Angela Wong Carbone, reports Deadline. The production team includes Will McCance and Dunton as producers, with Beckham taking on an executive producer role for Bunny Films, joined by De Lisser, and Matthew Petersen and Gill Holland serving as co-producers. Recently making her directorial debut with Lola, Nicola-Peltz Beckham has featured in projects such as Welcome to Chippendales, Holidate, Bates Motel, and Transformers: Age of Extinction. She is represented by Gersh, Will McCance, and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman. Meanwhile, Dunton has directed episodes of numerous notable contemporary series, including Ted Lasso, The Waterfront, We Were Liars, Outer Banks, and The Summer I Turned Pretty. She received two DGA Award nominations for her work on Ted Lasso, as well as Sundance's Best of Next! Audience Award for her 2011 feature which starred De Lisser. Elsewhere, the Beckham feud among the family appears to be grumbling on. There's been ongoing tensions among the star-studded family with Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz notably absent from Sir David's 50th birthday bash earlier this year. ‌ It was this which was said to have sparked a very public rift within the clan. The concerns have risen to the surface after several pointed comments from Nicola about family dynamics during her own dads birthday celebrations. Displaying her Pop Mart dolls arranged in formation to followers, she penned: "our little family", alongside a second telling image captioned: "My mom just gets it." She subsequently shared a photograph embracing her father, adding: "I love you so much dad." ‌ Speculation over tensions between the Beckhams and Nicola have been swirling since Brooklyn and Nicola's lavish Florida wedding in 2022. Despite the million-dollar event appearing as the pinnacle of romance, glamour, and family unity in polished photos, the reality behind the scenes was reportedly quite different. Nicola was said to be left seething by mother-in-law Victoria's behaviour during her wedding day, where it's claimed she attempted to upstage the bride. Reports suggest that Victoria Beckham caused a stir by selecting the same song that Nicola had chosen for her first dance with Brooklyn to use for her own mother-son dance. Meanwhile, Nicola shunned the opportunity to wear a dress from Victoria's fashion label on her big day. Detailing the events, Nicola said: "Well, I was planning on wearing Victoria's wedding dress," and "I was truly so excited to be able to wear a design that my future mother-in-law created. We connected to start designing the dress, and then a few days went by and I didn't hear anything. Victoria called my mom and said her atelier couldn't make it."

‘Anora' Isn't the Only Oscar Contender on an Upswing

With a victory for Best Original Screenplay win for 'Anora' at the Writers Guild Awards 2025, it certifies the Sean Baker film as the top contender for Best Picture, even if fellow Oscar nominees 'The Substance,' 'September 5,' and 'The Brutalist' were ineligible for the award having not been written by guild members or under a WGA collective bargaining agreement. 'Anora' had already won top prize at the PGA Awards and DGA Awards the previous weekend, with its Critics Choice Award for Best Film being a nice bonus. The only other film to win over those guilds and the WGA yet not win Best Picture is 'Brokeback Mountain' in 2006. The major harbinger indicating that the Ang Lee movie would not prevail at the Oscars was 'Crash' winning Best Ensemble at the SAG Awards, so a win at that particular awards body in the coming week is crucial to the Neon release's dominant awards campaign. More from IndieWire 'Nosferatu,' 'Conclave,' and 'Wicked' Win at the 2025 ADG Awards 'The Substance,' 'Wicked,' and 'The Last Showgirl' Win at the 2025 MUAHS Awards All that said, there is another Best Picture nominee that has been on a significant upswing stemming from these guild awards, which are happening concurrently with final Oscar voting. That film is 'Nickel Boys.' The Orion Pictures release directed by RaMell Ross won both Best Adapted Screenplay at the WGA Awards and the Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film at the DGA Awards. Although Ross is not nominated for Best Director at the Oscars, he is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside Joslyn Barnes, who is also one of the producers nominated for Best Picture on behalf of the film. The other two are Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner of Plan B Entertainment. However, it's more notable in this category that fellow Oscar nominees 'Sing Sing,' 'Emilia Pérez,' and 'Conclave' were ineligible at the WGAs. That's because 'Conclave,' the papal election drama written by Peter Straughan, adapting the Robert Harris novel of the same name, has been the category frontrunner thus far. Straughn won both the Critics Choice Award and the Golden Globe, but has yet to win an award voted on by people in the Academy. But that should change soon, as Straughan is expected to win at the BAFTAs on Sunday. What could ultimately determine which film wins the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar isn't the BAFTAs but the USC Scripter Awards, a prize that's leaning toward 'Nickel Boys.' That awards body is on a hot streak, having predicted the last two Oscar winners, including 'American Fiction' and 'Women Talking.' Coincidentally, both of those films also happened to be Orion Pictures releases. 'Conclave' though is not to be counted out, even though the WGA Awards have predicted the last four Best Adapted Screenplay winners in a row, as it is an incredibly popular film. But the other statistic that should cause the film some concern is that it has been seven years since the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay was not awarded to the film's director. If his reception at the DGA Awards, where all five Best Director nominees stood up to cheer him on, was any indication, Ross and his film 'Nickel Boys' have the most momentum as Oscar voting begins to wrap. Kanye West's X Account Deactivated After He Declared 'IM A NAZI' In Deluge Of Antisemitism

Kanye West's Twitter/X account has been deactivated after critics have decried his 'antisemitic rampage' on Elon Musk's social media platform. On Monday morning, West's page was replaced with the message: 'This account doesn't exist.' It is not clear if West deleted the account himself or if he was removed from the social media network. More from Deadline David Schwimmer Urges Elon Musk Not To Give Kanye West's Antisemitism "A Megaphone" With X: "Silence Is Complicity" Judd Apatow Taunts Trump and Musk During DGA Awards Monologue: "Let's All Go Super Double Woke" 'Real Time': Bill Maher Thinks Kanye West Is "Angling For A Cabinet Position" After Coming Out As Nazi Musk reinstated West's X account in 2023, eight months after the rapper previously praised Hitler and posted an image of a swastika blended with a star of David. Before exiting X today, West had been active during Super Bowl Sunday, including ranting about images of Taylor Swift dancing on television. West's account was slapped with a 'potentially sensitive content' warning message. Musk said: 'Given what he has posted, his account is now classified as NSFW [not safe for work]. You should not be seeing that anymore.' West, 47, later wrote: 'I'm logging out of Twitter. I appreciate Elon for allowing me to vent. It has been very cathartic to use the world as a sounding board.' The latest deactivation comes after West — known as Ye — posted a series of antisemitic posts, including declaring himself to be a Nazi. The comments prompted an outpouring of condemnation from critics including David Schwimmer and Piers Morgan. 'IM A NAZI,' he wrote over the weekend. 'I LOVE HITLER NOW WHAT BITCHES.' In another all-caps missive, he added: 'SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE JEWISH AND I DONT TRUST ANY OF THEM.' Schwimmer said: 'We can't stop a deranged bigot from spewing hate filled, ignorant bile… but we CAN stop giving him a megaphone, Mr. Musk. Kanye West has 32.7 million followers on your platform, X. That's twice as many people than the number of Jews in existence. His sick hate speech results in REAL LIFE violence against Jews. 'I don't know what's worse, the fact that he identifies as a Nazi (which implies he wants to exterminate ALL marginalized communities including his own) or the fact that there is not sufficient OUTRAGE to remove and ban him from all social media at this point. Silence is complicity.' The American Jewish Committee condemned West for continuing to 'purposefully use his platform to spew anti-Jewish hatred,' while the Campaign Against Antisemitism described it as an 'antisemitic rampage.' Morgan said: 'So disappointed that Kanye West has deleted his X account… said nobody. From genius rap superstar to demented, vile, racist, anti-Semitic, misogynist, violence-inducing troll. What a sad, pathetic downfall.'
