Markets potential for tourism as cultural landmarks

Nga (right) with Subang Jaya mayor Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim during the competition prize-giving ceremony. HOUSING and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) has allocated more than RM136mil to transform public markets nationwide into cultural landmarks and tourism hotspots. The announcement came during the second edition of Subang Jaya Car-Free Day (HTKSJ) 2025, held in Seri Kembangan, where Minister Nga Kor Ming officiated the prize-giving ceremony of the Design Idea Competition (DIC) for the redevelopment of Pasar Awam SK10, Seri Kembangan. He added that all new markets and those undergoing upgrades above RM10mil would be required to hold similar design competitions. The design competition for Pasar Awam SK10 in Selangor, set to undergo redevelopment estimated at RM12mil, was a joint effort between Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM). It attracted 91 designs from local architecture firms. This competition used a comprehensive evaluation method, with 90% assessed by professional jurors. The remaining 10% comprised community representatives, including Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki, city councillors, MBSJ department heads and representatives from SK10 Market Traders Association. The competition also accepted international entries to ensure the best ideas were considered. Moa Architects Sdn Bhd took home the top prize of RM50,000, followed by Ky Loh Architect with RM30,000 in second place. Spatial Factor Architects received RM15,000 for third placing, while seven other firms were given consolation prizes of RM5,000 each. The winning firms would be appointed as consultants, while the city council would retain design copyright. 'This initiative empowers local professionals, strengthens public-private sector collaboration and ensures that the redevelopment of public markets aligns with the needs of both the community and the industry,' said Nga. The Local Government Department (JKT), in collaboration with PAM, will run the design competition for eight other public market projects. They are Pasar Taman Muda in Ampang, Pasar Kajang and Pasar Kekal at the Pasar Sungai Long site in Cheras – all three in Selangor, Pasar Borong Gong Pauh in Kuala Terengganu (Terengganu), Pasar Besar Kuala Pilah (Negri Sembilan), Pasar Besar Kuala Krai (Kelantan), Pasar Besar Ipoh (Perak) and Pasar Besar Melaka Sentral in Melaka. On another matter, Nga said local councils would be categorised under performance-based 'traffic light' policy regarding federal funding. 'Councils ranked with a red light due to poor performance might have their allocations pulled. 'Those in yellow due to unsatisfactory (performance) will be reviewed. 'And those in green will be eligible for increased allocations,' he said.

Support package for diamond industry announced

Surat: A couple of months after various district level diamond associations in the state put their demands to chief minister Bhupendra Patel, the state govt announced a support package for unemployed diamond artisans and diamond units affected by the global slowdown. The govt announced support towards school fees, loan interest and electricity duty. Some 12 lakh workers are employed by the diamond industry in Surat and other parts of the state. The industry has been in crisis for three years as demand and prices of natural diamonds have fallen significantly. Due to war and conflicts between countries and a slowdown in major economies such as the US and China, there has been a sharp drop in demand. Under the support package, 100% of the school fees of jobless diamond artisans will be paid for each child, up to a maximum of Rs 13,500 per child per year. This assistance will be paid to schools through the direct benefits transfer (DBT) system, according to the guidelines of the education department. "To ensure that children of jobless diamond artisans do not face difficulties in their education and are not deprived of learning, assistance for school fees is being provided. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Similarly, for affected smaller diamond units, the govt is announcing support," said Harsh Sanghvi, minister of state for home and industries. Diamond artisans who lost their jobs after March 31, 2024, will be eligible. Additionally, the artisan must be over 21 years of age, have worked for at least three years in a diamond industry unit, and currently be unemployed. They should submit an application to the district industries centre (DIC) within two months from the date of the package announcement. The application must include a certificate from either the district labour officer, employment officer, or a recommendation letter from the Surat Diamond Association, as well as a certificate from the child's school regarding the school fees. Similarly, while announcing assistance for diamond units, Sanghvi added that special support has been determined to ensure the stability of these units. Under this, an interest subsidy will be provided on term loans up to a maximum capital of Rs 5 lakh at the rate of 9% for three years (from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028). Additionally, the units will be exempted from electricity duty for one year starting from July 1, 2025. Units wishing to avail of the assistance must apply to the DIC within one month from the date of the announcement, submitting proof such as Udyam Registration, loan sanction letter, GST registration, turnover details of the last three financial years, and electricity consumption records. "The package was announced considering various factors and will benefit those who need support. The relief will be provided based on applications by the affected persons," said Sanghvi. In March, a delegation of leaders of various district diamond associations met chief minister Bhupendra Patel and made a representation about the critical condition of the industry and diamond artisans. "At the time of representation, CM Patel assured us relief, and we are happy that the govt has announced a package. The govt is considering providing Rs 4 lakh assistance to the families of the 62 diamond artisans who ended their lives after verification," said Dinesh Navadiya, co-ordinator of All Gujarat Diamond Associations (AGDA). Navadiya added that the govt should consider support for diamond artisans whose salary has been reduced by over 30%.

During the District Industries Promotion and Export Committee meeting at the Collectorate here, the Collector reviewed the status of industrial approvals to the entrepreneurs, issued through the Single Desk Portal. Court weighs opening up criminal trial of top military officers

A South Korean court is considering opening to the public the criminal trial of three high-ranking military officers indicted in connection with disgraced former President Yoon Suk Yeol's short-lived martial law declaration. The Seoul Central District Court expressed its intent to discuss the matter with prosecutors, in response to objections continuously raised by civic groups against its practice of holding the legal proceedings of the military officers behind closed doors. 'The court did not disregard the public's right to know. The sessions were held in private in accordance with the law," said the judge, Ji Gwi-yeon, prior to the opening session of Wednesday's hearing for the three former military officers' criminal trial. "Today's hearing will proceed in private, but the court will positively consider options that do not undermine the public's right to know." A total of five hearings — the second to the sixth — for the high-ranking military officers have been held behind closed doors since March. The defendants include former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, former commander of the Defense Intelligence Command Noh Sang-won and former DIC Col. Kim Yong-gun. The seventh hearing in the criminal trial of the three officers is scheduled for May 23. The proceedings of the high-ranking military officers were initially conducted separately. However, the court decided in February to merge the cases, as all three are charged in connection with key insurrection-related duties, and the cases are closely linked. Different civic groups, including the Center for Military Human Rights Korea and Lawyers for a Democratic Society, have urged the court to ensure the public's right to know, contending that the trial on insurrection charges should be held publicly, as it does not relate to the mission of the DIC. 'Article 109 of the Constitution stipulates that the trials and decisions of the courts shall be open to the public," said the civic groups in a joint statement issued Wednesday. "Since the martial law declaration severely violated the constitutional order and broadly infringed upon the fundamental rights of the people, the public's right to know must be more firmly guaranteed for the trial." The court initially granted the Defense Ministry's request to hold the hearings behind closed doors, citing national security concerns over testimony from DIC officers. But the court later proposed partial disclosure — keeping sensitive details including names, affiliations and location of military bases private — while switching between open and closed sessions. Prosecutors agree with opening the trial to the public, saying full secrecy was no longer necessary after witness examinations. However, legal representatives of the defendants opposed the idea, insisting those who demand public trials essentially want to pressure the witnesses and defendants. While the former defense minister was indicted on charges of helping Yoon to stage an insurrection through the short-lived martial law declaration late in the night of Dec. 3, 2024, Noh and Kim were indicted under detention on charges of insurrection, abuse of power and activities that obstruct others from exercising their rights in January.
