Sable suffers 'minor injury' during Monaco DL, will be 'fine' in 1-2 weeks: coach

New Delhi, Jul 13 (PTI) Seasoned Indian steeplechaser Avinash Sable sustained a minor injury due to a nasty fall during the Monaco Diamond League two days back but he will be all right in quick time, his long-time coach Amrish Kumar said on Sunday. Asian Games champion and national record holder Sable failed to finish the men's 3000m steeplechase event on Friday as he fell down during the water jump early in the race. He was seen clutching his lower thigh area just at the back of the knee as he left the race. "Sable has suffered a minor injury around the knee. He will take rest and he should be all right in one or two weeks at the maximum. It is not much to worry about," Kumar, who is with the Army Sports Institute in Pune, told PTI. "He (Sable) was trying to protect the runner ahead of him and who just jumped over the water barrier. While doing that, he himself fell, this kind of things happen in a race," he added. The athlete ahead of him lost balance and went down, causing Sable to stumble as well. It was Kumar who spotted Sable after he joined the Indian Army in 2012. Kumar made Sable shift to steeplechase from cross country run in 2017 and nurtured him into a top athlete.. With just one point from three DL meetings this season, it will be difficult for the 30-year-old Sable to make it to the DL Finals on August 27-28 in Zurich, Switzerland. Sable, whose national record stands at 8 minute 09.91 seconds, finished 13th in the Xiamen DL on April 16, was eighth in Keqiao -- also in China -- before a DNF in Monaco on Friday. The last DL meeting which has men's 3000m steeplechase in the roster is in Brussels on August 22. On Friday, the sports ministry has approved Sable's training in Colorado Springs, USA from July 15 to September 3 to prepare for the World Championships (September 13-21) in Tokyo for which he has already qualified.

Neeraj Chopra, Arshad Nadeem set for first battle since since Paris Olympics at Silesia Diamond League meet

Next month's showdown between India's Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem in Poland will also be the first since the former breached the 90-metre mark for the first time in his career at the Doha Diamond League meet in May. read more India's Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem had stood on the podium together at the end of the men's javelin throw final in the Paris Olympics last year. PTI Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra will be facing Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem for the first time since the Paris Olympics last year at the Diamond League meet in Poland next month. The Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial will be taking place at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzow, Poland, and will host an Indo-Pak showdown in men's javelin throw on 16 August, immediately after the two nations celebrate their Independence Day. This will be the first meeting between the two since Nadeem beat Chopra to Olympic gold in the French capital last year with a 92.97m throw that also broke the Games record. Chopra had made history at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 by becoming the first Indian to win a Olympic gold in athletics, and was eyeing back-to-back victories when the Pakistani dashed his hopes with one monster throw, with Chopra winning silver with a best effort of 89.45m. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The two were originally scheduled to face off at the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic, which took place at Bengaluru's Sree Kanteerava Stadium earlier this month. The invitation to Nadeem, however, was withdrawn after the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam in April that was followed by a military conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations. 'First opportunity for revenge after the Paris Olympics' What makes the upcoming showdown even spicier is the fact that it will be the first meeting between Chopra and Nadeem since the former breached the 90-metre mark for the first time in his career. 'Neeraj Chopra will face Arshad Nadeem. The Indian-Pakistani battle awaiting the Polish fans will be the first opportunity for revenge after the Paris Olympics,' read a statement from the organisers announcing the participants at next month's event. 'The Pakistani's form remains something of a mystery, as he rarely appears on the European circuit. The exception he will make on August 16th results from his desire to face Chopra. 'The latter became the 26th thrower in history to surpass 90 metres this spring. And he is certainly yearning for more,' it added, referring to Chopra breaching the 90-metre barrier for the first time in his career during the Doha meet earlier in the 2025 Diamond League. The latest Diamond League event took place in Monaco, where Animesh Kujur became the first Indian sprinter to compete in the prestigious competition, finishing a creditable fourth in U-23 200m. The DL caravan then moves to London next week before resuming action in Poland next month.

Sports Minister Leads Wishes As 'GOAT' Neeraj Chopra Wins Ostrava Golden Spike

Last Updated: Neeraj Chopra won the Golden Spike meet with a throw of 85.29m on Tuesday in Czech Republic. Neeraj Chopra continued his winning run as on Tuesday, he won the Golden Spike meet in what was his maiden appearance at the event held in Ostrava (Czech Republic). With a throw of 85.29m, the Indian javelin throw superstar, secured the title days after winning the prestigious Paris Diamond League. Chopra was in third place at the end of the second round after starting with a foul, followed by a throw of 83.45m. He claimed the top spot with his third-round throw of 85.29m, and his subsequent throws were 82.17m and 81.01m, before fouling his final attempt. South African Douw Smit gave Neeraj a tough fight and finished second with an 84.12m throw in the second round. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada was third with an opening attempt of 83.63m. Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya praised the 27-year-old for his performance, calling him a 'true champion'. 'Neeraj does it again! Wins the Ostrava Golden Spike with a stellar 85.29m throw. A true champion who makes the nation proud every single time!" Mandaviya posted on X (formerly Twitter). Despite the presence of his coach Zelezny, who was the event director, the 27-year-old Indian was not at his peak performance. Chopra had missed the last two editions of the Golden Spike, an event his coach Zelezny won nine times during his illustrious career, due to fitness issues. He has had an impressive season, winning his first Diamond League title in two years in Paris after surpassing the elusive 90m mark during his second-place finish in the Doha DL in May. Chopra must be pleased to win the title at the Golden Spike, a venue where world record holder Zelezny excelled during his career. The Czech legend won nine titles between 1986 and 2006, often with 90m-plus throws, in this prestigious event first held in 1961. Chopra has competed in Ostrava before but not at the Golden Spike. He participated in the IAAF Continental Cup in 2018 as part of the Asia Pacific team and finished sixth with a throw of 80.24m. After his Paris DL win, Chopra emphasised the need to work on his core muscles for better control of his throws, admitting that his run-up may have been slightly too fast. Weber had defeated Chopra in the Doha DL on May 16 and the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial meet on May 23 in Poland, but the Indian surpassed him in Paris on June 20 with a first-round throw of 88.16m. Before Paris, Chopra's last DL title was in Lausanne in June 2023 with a throw of 87.66m. Chopra's next competition will be the NC Classic, which he is hosting in Bengaluru on July 5. Peters and Rohler will also compete in Bengaluru. News18 Sports brings you the latest updates, live commentary, and highlights from cricket, football, tennis, badmintion, wwe and more. Following his triumph, Neeraj said, 'It was a very good start. I felt really good at the start. But I had too much speed today. The runway was perfect, but I couldn't control my speed. Neeraj Chopra reigns in the javelin world rankings

Neeraj Chopra of Team India (Photo by) Bengaluru: Neeraj Chopra may have settled for the second place at the Paris Olympics but his consistent performances over the last season helped him to top the list compiled by the world's top statisticians who track athletes on the track and field. Chopra, who came second to Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem in Paris, emerged on top of the list which has Anderson Peters of Grenada in second spot followed by Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic. Nadeem is fifth. Julian Weber ids fourth. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'Nadeem only competed at the Olympics and the Paris Diamond League (DL), winning the former with the year's two best throws in a high-standard competition. He lost at the Paris DL to Peters, Vadlejch and Julian Weber who all had great success through the rest of the season and were well ahead of the chasing bunch,' Stuart Mazdon of Association of Track and Field Statisticians (ATFS) wrote in the Athletics 2025, The International Track and Field Annual . Yashasvi Jaiswal credits Shubman Gill after maiden Test ton in England: 'I love it' 'But the best overall season came from Chopra, beating Peters 3-2, including for Olympic silver. Chopra only had two wins, but four major second places. Peters won three DL meetings including the final but was less consistent. Weber beat Vadlejch 3-2, but Vadlejch was ahead at the two championships, European Championships and Olympic Games,' he said in the Annual, which is into the 75th year of its publication. The first edition came out in 1951. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Affordable Online Counseling – Anytime, Anywhere Affordable Online Counseling | Search Ads Learn More Undo Quiz: Who's that IPL player?
