Panicked Fans Jostling For Air: Bengaluru Stampede Video Shows How Chaos Unfolded
Last Updated: Free passes, overcrowding and limited seats at the Chinnaswamy Stadium are said to be some of the major reasons that led to the stampede People jostling, fighting for air, and making desperate attempts to save themselves from a swelling crowd—a video from the stampede that unfolded outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during celebrations to mark the RCB lifting the IPL trophy showed the chaos that ensued on Wednesday, which resulted in 11 deaths. The first leg of the celebrations involved Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah felicitating the team on the steps of the Vidhan Soudha. However, a huge crowd was also building up outside the stadium, which seems to have escaped the attention of the authorities. Free passes, overcrowding and limited seats at the Chinnaswamy Stadium are said to be some of the major reasons that led to the stampede in which 11 were killed and over 45 injured. The government's assertion that the celebrations were not pre-planned also fell flat on Thursday as CNN-News18 accessed communication between the government and the Karnataka State Cricket Association which revealed that Bengaluru Police were not in favour of the felicitation ceremony for RCB at the Vidhana Soudha. On June 3, KSCA wrote to DPAR, seeking permission to hold a felicitation event on the grand steps of the Vidhan Soudha if RCB wins the IPL. DPAR then wrote to the police, seeking their opinion on the proposal. However, sources in the police department said the cops were not in favour of allowing the Vidhana Soudha event. According to police sources, Bengaluru police have become a fait accompli in the situation. The police are analysing tweets from the RCB franchise and found that information regarding the victory procession, an announcement about free passes, and the build-up to the event ultimately led to the crowd surge. Sandeep Prathamesh, a witness to the tragedy, said: 'People were rushing in droves towards the stadium, and many were pushing towards the gates. The entry gates are small. Only those with passes or tickets were allowed inside, but many had gathered simply to be part of the celebrations, without tickets." First Published: June 05, 2025, 11:05 IST

Bengaluru Police Were Not In Favour Of RCB's IPL Victory Event That Claimed 11 Lives
Last Updated: Bengaluru Police were not in favour of the felicitation ceremony for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Vidhana Soudha Bengaluru Police were not in favour of the felicitation ceremony for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Vidhana Soudha, communication between the Siddaramaiah government and the Karnataka State Cricket Association accessed by CNN-News18 has revealed. The victory celebrations for RCB, which lifted the IPL trophy after 18 years, turned tragic on Wednesday as 11 people were killed in a stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium near the Vidhan Soudha. As Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah began the first round of felicitation for the team at the steps of the Vidhan Soudha, authorities seemed unaware of the trouble brewing nearby as a sea of humanity swelled outside the stadium. The latest communication shows that the RCB celebration at Vidhana Soudha was planned much before the finals on June 3, bursting the government's claim that the celebrations were all last-minute events. Addressing the media on Wednesday, Siddaramaiah had said 'no one expected such a huge crowd". 'The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but nearly three lakh people came," he said, adding that people had gathered at the Vidhan Soudha too but no injuries or casualties were reported.

Karnataka govt to felicitate RCB team on grand steps of Vidhana Soudha
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government will host a felicitation programme for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team, winners of the IPL 2025 trophy, on the grand steps of the Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday. The Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) is making swift arrangements at the venue. "The programme is being organised at the grand steps of the Vidhana Soudha. I am handing over the trophy to them," Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told the media at the Vidhana Soudha, adding: "I am only giving back the trophy they have already won." "I am congratulating the RCB team players. I also congratulate the RCB fans. This is a matter of pride for the entire country and the state, because RCB had not won the cup in all these years. They have made it in the 18th edition of the IPL. This is a matter of extreme joy." DPAR Secretary G. Satyavathi, Secretary, who was monitoring the preparations at the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha, said that they are planning to host a felicitation programme there. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar will be present, and all the MLAs have been invited. "We request the fans not to come to the vicinity of Vidhana Soudha as there are restrictions. It is a sensitive place. This is the starting point, and I request fans to go to the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium." Thousands of fans are expected to gather at the stadium to cheer for their favourite players. The police department has held multiple meetings to arrange security measures. Referring to potential traffic jams in the city due to the roadshow and victory parade, Home Minister G. Parameshwara stated that people are likely to enjoy the traffic jams on such occasions.

Fresh turf war: DCM opposes CM's transfers, demands reversal
Bengaluru: The uneasy power-sharing equation between chief minister and his deputy flared up again -- this time, over the transfer of five senior engineers —adding fresh fuel to a series of bureaucratic flashpoints between the state's top two leaders. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It has now emerged that Shivakumar, who also holds water resources department, formally objected to the May 9 transfer orders issued by the department of personnel and administrative reforms (DPAR), which operates under the chief minister's direct control. In a strongly worded letter to chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh, the deputy CM directed her to "immediately withdraw" the transfers, saying the decisions were made without his approval. The chief secretary is yet to respond to Shivakumar's letter. The chief minister has also not responded publicly to Shivakumar's objections, but the move is being widely interpreted in political circles as another sign of the deepening rift between the two Congress heavyweights. The engineers, all from the public works department (PWD), were reassigned to key posts within the water resources department. The list includes divisions managing sensitive and strategic portfolios such as interstate water disputes, irrigation under the Neeravari projects, the politically contentious Yettinahole project, the Command Area Development Authority (CADA), and the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation. Shivakumar took exception to the way transfers were executed. In a written note, he reminded the chief secretary that the Congress leadership had reached a foundational agreement when the govt was formed: "No transfers or appointments related to my department should be made without my approval. These transfers have been carried out without any reference to the minister concerned," Shivakumar wrote, warning that such moves violate protocol and undermine ministerial authority. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now One of the engineers affected, BH Manjunath, currently posted with the police housing corporation, is due to retire on May 31. The DPAR's order, however, instructed a replacement engineer to report to the post in advance, further raising eyebrows in Shivakumar's office. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have struggled to maintain a working relationship amid growing turf battles over portfolios, budget allocations, and bureaucratic appointments. Party insiders acknowledge the tension. The power structure in the state, they say, has become fraught with friction as Shivakumar with chief ministerial aspiration is jostling for influence over high-profile departments like Bengaluru development, water resources, and public works. Although the Congress has attempted to present a united front publicly, the discord is increasingly hard to conceal. Earlier skirmishes over board nominations, the handling of state finances, and control over Bengaluru's infrastructure roadmap have already set the stage for mistrust.
