Fresh turf war: DCM opposes CM's transfers, demands reversal

Bengaluru: The uneasy power-sharing equation between chief minister
and his deputy
flared up again -- this time, over the transfer of five senior engineers —adding fresh fuel to a series of bureaucratic flashpoints between the state's top two leaders.

It has now emerged that Shivakumar, who also holds water resources department, formally objected to the May 9 transfer orders issued by the department of personnel and administrative reforms (DPAR), which operates under the chief minister's direct control. In a strongly worded letter to chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh, the deputy CM directed her to "immediately withdraw" the transfers, saying the decisions were made without his approval.
The chief secretary is yet to respond to Shivakumar's letter. The chief minister has also not responded publicly to Shivakumar's objections, but the move is being widely interpreted in political circles as another sign of the deepening rift between the two Congress heavyweights.
The engineers, all from the public works department (PWD), were reassigned to key posts within the water resources department. The list includes divisions managing sensitive and strategic portfolios such as interstate water disputes, irrigation under the Neeravari projects, the politically contentious Yettinahole project, the Command Area Development Authority (CADA), and the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation.
Shivakumar took exception to the way transfers were executed. In a written note, he reminded the chief secretary that the Congress leadership had reached a foundational agreement when the govt was formed: "No transfers or appointments related to my department should be made without my approval. These transfers have been carried out without any reference to the minister concerned," Shivakumar wrote, warning that such moves violate protocol and undermine ministerial authority.

One of the engineers affected, BH Manjunath, currently posted with the police housing corporation, is due to retire on May 31. The DPAR's order, however, instructed a replacement engineer to report to the post in advance, further raising eyebrows in Shivakumar's office.
Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have struggled to maintain a working relationship amid growing turf battles over portfolios, budget allocations, and bureaucratic appointments.
Party insiders acknowledge the tension. The power structure in the state, they say, has become fraught with friction as Shivakumar with chief ministerial aspiration is jostling for influence over high-profile departments like Bengaluru development, water resources, and public works.
Although the Congress has attempted to present a united front publicly, the discord is increasingly hard to conceal. Earlier skirmishes over board nominations, the handling of state finances, and control over Bengaluru's infrastructure roadmap have already set the stage for mistrust.

Secret Wedding? Mahua Moitra marries BJD's Pinaki Misra

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has tied the knot with senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Pinaki Misra, reports said. According to The Telegraph India, the wedding took place on May 3 in a strictly private affair, with both leaders keeping the event a top secret. Even party insiders were reportedly unaware of the development. Adding fuel to the speculation, photographs sourced by The Telegraph India from Germany show Moitra adorned in gold jewellery and smiling, which have since circulated online. However, no official statement has been issued by either Moitra or Misra, and their respective parties have remained silent. The couple has neither confirmed nor denied the reports. Mahua Moitra, a two-time Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar, West Bengal, was a former investment banker who transitioned into politics and quickly gained a reputation as one of Parliament's most articulate and fearless voices. This is reportedly Moitra's second marriage. She was previously married to Danish financier Lars Brorson. More recently, she was in a highly publicized relationship with lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai. That relationship ended acrimoniously, culminating in legal disputes and public accusations. Moitra had referred to Dehadrai as a 'jilted ex' during the controversy that ultimately led to her suspension from Parliament in late 2023. Pinaki Misra is four-time MP from Puri. He was previously married to Sangeeta Misra, with whom he has two children. As of now, the reported marriage between Moitra and Misra remains unconfirmed officially, but the emerging images and reports have sparked considerable buzz in political circles.

Mahua Moitra marries Pinaki Misra in private ceremony in Germany, political circles taken by surprise at low-key affair

Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra recently got married in a low-profile ceremony. The MP from Krishnanagar tied the knot with Pinaki Misra, a senior advocate and former Member of Parliament from Puri. The wedding reportedly took place in Germany on May 30, away from media attention and political buzz as reported by ABP. Neither Moitra nor the party made a formal announcement, maintaining a private stance about the ceremony. As of now the wedding date is not clear. About Pinaki Misra Pinaki Misra, 64, is a well-known face in Indian politics and law. He began his parliamentary career in 1996 when he was elected from Puri on a Congress ticket. A graduate of Delhi's St. Stephen's College and the Faculty of Law at Delhi University, Misra later joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). He returned to Parliament in 2009 and served three consecutive terms till 2019. Before the 2024 elections, Misra stepped back from politics. He has two children—a son and a daughter—from his previous marriage. Mahua Moitra's journey Mahua Moitra's political career began after a stint in investment banking. She served as an MLA from Karimpur before becoming a Lok Sabha MP in 2019 representing Krishnanagar. Known for her bold speeches, including one on the "early signs of fascism" that went viral, Moitra quickly became a notable voice in Parliament. Although she was expelled from the House in 2023 due to a controversy, she returned in 2024 after securing another electoral win. Moitra was earlier married to Danish financier Lars Brorson and later dated lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai. Staying out of spotlight The wedding, held in Germany, has drawn attention mostly because of its unexpected and quiet nature. Moitra was seen in traditional attire and gold jewellery, posing with Misra in what appeared to be a private moment away from political life. Despite their public profiles, both leaders opted to keep their personal event low-key and away from media coverage.
