Formula E changes Shanghai E-Prix schedule due to heavy rain forecast
Formula E will see a change to its planned Shanghai E-Prix schedule on Sunday, as heavy rain poses a threat to the running of the second race of the weekend. In Saturday's race, the first round of its double-header weekend in China, Maximilian Guenther secured his second victory for DS Penske in an action-packed race at the Shanghai International Circuit, with his team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne making it a maiden 1-2 for the American team. Advertisement Tomorrow will likely be a very different day, with heavy rain forecast across the municipality for the majority of Sunday. The amended schedule will now see Free Practice 3 moved an hour earlier to 07:00 local time, with the same for qualifying which is now at 09:00 local time in Shanghai. The race has also been reshuffled and lights out will begin at 13:00 local time. It's understood that if rain prevents any times being set in FP3 or qualifying, the results from the second free practice on Saturday will be used to form the starting grid, meaning Porsche's Antonio Felix da Costa will be on pole and McLaren's Taylor Barnard will start alongside him on the front row. A spokesperson for Formula E confirmed: 'As the inclement weather forecast for Sunday's race is anticipated to impact the current sporting schedule for Round 11, the 2025 Hankook Shanghai E-Prix, together with the FIA, Teams and Manufacturers have taken the decision to amend the event timings in order to allow maximum track sessions to go ahead, taking into consideration rain and light conditions. Advertisement "The safety and experience of our fans, guests and personnel are our highest priority as we aim to put on the best racing spectacle possible here in China. We thank the organisers and local authorities for their prompt and unified response and we look forward to another successful Hankook Shanghai E-Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit tomorrow.' Advertisement As wet races impact the championship more regularly, with the past three events all affected by rain, the majority of drivers are discontent with the all-weather Hankook compound available to the grid. 'It is not a wet tyre, it doesn't work in the wet at any point,' McLaren's Sam Bird told after Monaco. 'Even the guys that came at the front can say it doesn't even work in the wet. All the drivers have said similar things [about introducing a full wet tyre] for quite a while, not just with the current supplier. "It has been a bit of, not an issue, but when you are racing and you're pushing the rubber, the rubber is going to move and manipulate itself and anytime you have a tread block of any sort that then can push water away, it's not going to be good in the dry. 'Similarly if you have a block that is good with dry running, it is never going to be able to dissipate water. It is very challenging. Advertisement 'The cars are getting so quick now, I think Formula E should consider bringing a form of wet tyre to the races.' Bridgestone has already been confirmed as the championship's sole tyre supplier from the 2026/2027 season onwards through to 2029/30 – the Gen4 era. It will become the third different tyre supplier the championship has seen since debuting in 2014, after Michelin starred things off as a founding partner until Hankook took over from the 2022/23 season. Vergne started from tenth on the grid to join pole-winner Gunther on the podium. DS Penske drivers react to double win in Formula E Round 10 in Shanghai Sharing his picture with the trophy on Instagram, Maximilian Gunther wrote after his win at the Shanghai E-Prix: 'YEEESS!!! Pole. Win. P1-P2 win as a team. Couldn't be happier! Huge congrats to @jeanericvergne on second place and big thanks to @ds_penske_fe @dsperformance for the amazing car and strategy today.' Gunther had said in a previous Instagram post that he was ready to give everything in the race after securing pole position in the qualifying round. After the win, he said, 'Amazing! A 1-2 for the team, I'm so happy. A real masterclass this race, I think the strategy, the pace, the execution, the moves – everything was nice. I knew when I put the overlap on Oli [Rowland] and had more energy, I just had to go and get my head down and try to be secure, which we managed. I'm extremely happy. It means a lot, especially after these last few weeks when momentum was not on our side. This weekend we certainly got it back! It's been a lot of hard work and I'm very happy for the team.' Jean-Eric Vergne delivered an impressive performance by reaching the podium despite starting deep in the pack. However, he sustained an injury following a collision on his way to the finish line. Talking about the race and his strategy, Vergne said: 'What a race! It's been a rollercoaster. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now I left a little bit of my front wing in the last corner, I think a bit of my wrist as well – I was suffering the whole race, I really hurt it. Honestly I don't know, I just went for it – I think we did the right call keeping the Attack Mode quite late. Everybody was attacking a lot and I thought that since everyone was doing that I should save a bit more energy and try to use it towards the end, and it paid off quite nicely. Shanghai E-Prix Round 10 results This marks DS Penske's first-ever 1-2 finish in Formula E, and Maximilian Gunther's first win of the season. While Gunther started from pole, Taylor Barnard had lined up second on the grid. Tag Heuer Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein, who qualified third, fell down the order and ultimately finished 12th. — FIAFormulaE (@FIAFormulaE) Nissan's Oliver Rowland, the current leader in the FIA Drivers' World Championship standings, had a full lap of the 50kW, four-wheel-drive Attack Mode boost over Barnard and passed him late in the race. However, Gunther had built a 30-second lead over Rowland, enough to secure victory on Lap 26. Despite starting sixth, Rowland finished fifth. Jean-Eric Vergne wasn't the only driver to make a big leap. CUPRA Kiro's Dan Ticktum impressed by climbing from the back of the grid to finish just shy of the podium in fourth place. Behind him were the two Nissan drivers: Rowland in fifth and Norman Nato in sixth. NEOM McLaren's Sam Bird secured seventh, while Mahindra Racing's Nyck de Vries came home in eighth. Envision Racing's Sebastien Buemi and Robin Frijns rounded out the top ten. After Jeddah, Maximilian Gunther eyes another victory as Formula E heads to Tokyo
Image credit: Maximilian Gunther/Instagram The Tokyo E-Prix is around the corner, and Formula E drivers are already looking to leave the Monaco hangover behind. Maximilian Gunther , who won the last Tokyo race as part of Maserati MSG Racing, has already secured one victory this season with DS Penske—in Jeddah—and will be aiming to continue his winning streak. Maximilian Gunther's performance in current Formula E season Maximilian Gunther is the only Formula E driver this year to have converted a pole position into a win. After clinching the win in Formula E Championship Round 3, he'll be looking to replicate that success in Tokyo. After his Jeddah win, Günther shared a photo of himself with the trophy on Instagram, writing: 'P1!!! What a race. What a day. What a feeling. Started from pole, dropped back to P9, and then fought back to take the win in the final corners, on the final lap. This one means everything! Today is a true testament to the hard work we've put in as a team over the past months, and it's only the beginning. A massive thank you to everyone at @dsperformance and @ds_penske_fe, both here at the track and back at the factory. This win is for all of us.' However, Gunther couldn't do much in his home city, Monaco, despite the double opportunities in the double header. He summed up his Monaco experience in a post that read: 'Racing on the iconic streets of Monaco is always special. 🇲🇨 After a strong qualifying, we lined up P3 and gave it everything out there today. Unfortunately, we didn't have the race pace and crossed the line in P8. Not the easiest weekend, but still walking away with two points finishes here. Now it's time to reset and focus on Tokyo.' Pole curse hit Oliver Rowland's victory chances at Monaco E-Prix Round 7, but Nissan driver remains confident ahead of Tokyo E-Prix: "We just need to keep pushing"
There is no stopping Oliver Rowland , who had double gains at the recently held Monaco E-Prix double-header and is 'really pleased' with his position in Round 7. The Nissan driver won Round 6 and had said, 'Normally you'd be looking forward to the champagne, but you've already got one eye on tomorrow.' Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He did keep the champagne celebrations under control after his win in Monaco and yielded results with his podium finish the next day. Oliver Rowland couldn't translate his pole into victory in Monaco Round 7 Oliver Rowland had won the pole position and was confidently leading in the first half of the race, but as if the pole curse continues to be in place ever since 2022, he couldn't manage to cross the finish line first. It was Envision Racing's Sébastien Buemi who ended his more than six-year-long wait for a win by lifting the winner's trophy on Day 2 of the Monaco E-Prix. Only António Félix da Costa had managed to translate his pole into a victory at the Formula E Monaco race in 2021. Sharing his take on the Monaco race, Rowland said, 'I think honestly when he [Buemi] took his Attack Mode, he knew I had more to do — I think he was trying to back me into the pack, so when I took it, I lost quite a lot. But, first and second here doesn't get much better, so I'm really, really pleased. We just need to keep pushing. We've got Tokyo next week where I was really strong last year, so hopefully we can have a real big push for that double-header and then keep pushing in the right direction.' Many believed Rowland was in his own race as he took a three-second lead in the first half. However, he lunged at the chicane on Lap 21, and it was Buemi who surpassed him at the right time. The Nissan driver's move was later judged over-exuberant by the stewards, forcing him to cede the position to Jean-Éric Vergne in recompense, but the damage cost the DS Penske driver a crack at the race win, as Mahindra Racing's Nyck de Vries and Buemi made it by as Vergne bogged down in avoiding action. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Rowland once again gave up the lead to Vergne as he took his final mandatory 50kW, four-wheel drive Attack Mode activation, to use that overlap of extra power and traction to push past Vergne and de Vries on Laps 23 and 24 respectively, for second place at the flag, some four seconds back from Buemi. Also Read: Up next is the Tokyo double-header on May 17 and 18. It is Nissan's home soil. Rowland is already on top of the Drivers' standings with 115 points in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship . He won the pole last season and went on to take the second spot on the podium at the last Tokyo E-Prix — just like his performance in Monaco Round 7.
