I hope I'm not wrong – your thoughts please?

Zakes' Sports Corner has been told that Young Pirates FC is going to play their ABC Motsepe League home game in Midvaal. So, what does this mean for our football in this region? MATTER OF FACT, Zakes' Sports Corner was under the impression that the club would play their league matches either at Qedilize ground in Evaton North in Vaal, or even at the Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark. These two venues in the past hosted top-flight football, especially the Isak Steyl Stadium. This venue hosted the Motsepe Foundation Championship and DSTV Diski Challenge matches in the past. So, based on this, Zakes' Sports Corner thought this venue would be a top pick for Young Pirates FC to play their home fixtures. However, Zakes' Sports Corner was wrong to think this venue would be automatically chosen. Whenever this venue hosted either the Motsepe Foundation Championship or DDC matches, the local soccer fans came in numbers. Please, don't get Zakes' Sports Corner wrong. I'm not suggesting that the choice for the club to use the Meyerton Stadium is a bad decision. No, Not at all! Those with long memories will recall how, in the past, Meyerton Stadium used to host the ABC Motsepe League matches, formerly the Vodacom League. Zakes' Sports Corner wants to believe that the decision for the Young Pirates FC management to use this venue for their home games was purely based on the interest of football, especially the Midvaal community. But having said this, the club's management could have looked at a number of things before they made the decision to play their home games there. For example, the population was something that they could have thought about before the decision was made. Isak Steyl Stadium and Qedilizwe were the most central venues. These are top-notch soccer facilities that the club could have utilised! But the reality is that it is well known that the Emfuleni Local Municipality's services are a BIG concern. The sports facilities are not maintained, and Zakes' Sports Corner guesses that Young Pirates FC's decision to play their game in Midvaal was something to do with service delivery under this municipality. I hope I'm not wrong! The sporting facilities in Emfuleni leave much to be desired, to say the least. Zakes' Sports Corner wishes Young Pirates FC all the best in their campaign in the ABC Motsepe League in the new season. Let the games begin! Amajita's AFCON U20 win shines light on grassroots initiatives

This includes Gomolemo Kekana, who netted the winning goal, and Tylon Smit,h who walked away with the player of the tournament award. 'We are incredibly proud of Amajita. This remarkable achievement underscores the impact that grassroots development initiatives, such as our DStv Diski Challenge, play in unearthing and nurturing exceptional football talent. With 18 of the players competing regularly in the Reserve League, the DDC has served as a crucial platform, providing young players with the competitive environment and exposure necessary to reach their full potential,' said Rendani Ramovha, CEO of SuperSport. South Africa's Under-20 head coach Raymond Mdaka also credited the DSTV Diski Challenge for playing an important role in football development in South Africa. 'I salute the DDC because it made it easy for us to be able to see players weekend over weekend going to different places, seeing them and also following them the country is so big, if it wasn't for the DDC we weren't going to be able to see them. You couldn't drive maybe to have follow ups but through the DDC we were able to do that. We salute and we say they have done a good job for the country,' said Mdaka. Amajita have followed in the footsteps of Bafana Bafana's in 1996 and Banyana Banyana's in 2022 teams, in scooping the continental title.

Sundowns walk away with bragging rights

SEDIBENG.- Local soccer fans packed the Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark to capacity on Sunday. They went home entertained after Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates clashed in the DSTV Diski Challenge match. Sundowns walked away with bragging rights when they beat Pirates babies 1-0. The score could have been worse if Sundowns had converted their chances in the opening minutes of the game. They were all over the home team, dominating the ball possession. The fans enjoyed every moment of this action-packed encounter. Even though Sundowns looked superior, Pirates regrouped as they also put together some exciting touches, much applauded by their supporters. It was a game of chess with both sides very cautious when in attack or ball possession; however, the game went to break with the score still 0-0. Sundowns came into the second half more purposefully, forcing Pirates to defend with their backs against the wall. The 1-0 final score was not a true reflection of the game. Both sides created clear scoring opportunities, but their forwards were wasteful in front of the goals. Meanwhile, Sekhukhune United and Cape Town City shared the soil when these two sides played to a goalless draw at the same venue on Sunday. Apart from these DDC games, there was action galore at different venues in the Vaal over the long weekend. The UK Easter Tournament was one of the tournaments that attracted a large crowd to the UK's dusty soccer ground in Zone 7. There was also an Easter Tournament at the Pepsi ground in Sharpeville. Both tournaments came to an end on Monday. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
