BBC plots major Amazon Fire Stick rival filled with free TV channels to succeed Freeview that's even easier to use
BBC top boss has hinted that a Fire Stick rival loaded with free TV channels could launch in the future. Public service broadcasters are battling to keep up with streaming giants like Netflix and Prime that have contributed towards a fall in traditional linear TV viewing habits. Advertisement 2 BBC boss says broadcaster wants to 'double down on Freely' Credit: SOPA Images/LightRocket via Gett 2 Streaming devices like Fire Sticks are incredibly popular among viewers Credit: Getty It also acts as a gateway to free streaming services like BBC iPlayer and ITVX all in one place. So far Freely has only been made available in new TVs that you can buy, as opposed to a box or streaming stick that plugs into your existing set. However, BBC Director-General Tim Davie has revealed that it could change. Advertisement Read more about BBC 'We have been working hard to build digital platforms and content to meet changing audience needs, enriching our offer and welcoming the possibilities of a post broadcast world,' he said during a speech at Salford's Lowry Theatre. 'We want to double down on Freely as a universal free service to deliver live TV over broadband. 'And we are considering a streaming media device with Freely capabilities built in, with a radically simplified user interface specifically designed to help those yet to benefit from IP services.' BBC, along with ITV, Channel 4 and 5 own Everyone TV, the company that operates Freeview, Freely and Freesat. "I talked a few years ago about my belief that we needed to own digital switchover, not get dragged, and proactively shape the future," he said. Freely the UK's new free streaming service Some 18million homes are still using Freeview. Amazon's popular Advertisement But a Freely-inspired rival could make it even simpler for viewers. A Government report found that 87 per cent of UK homes had an internet-enabled primary TV in 2023 while 17 per cent were dependent on the current digital terrestrial set-up. However, it also predicts that around 1.5million homes could still rely on an aerial to watch TV by 2040 without intervention. WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE WE REPLACE FREEVIEW Analysis by Jamie Harris, Assistant Technology and Science Editor at The Sun DTT - digital terrestrial television - is the system used for Freeview broadcasts today. About 18million homes still use it as their main way of watching TV. Before we even begin to think about switching it off, we have to make sure no one is left behind. So any internet-based alternative - Freely or otherwise - needs to be just as easy to install and use. Then there's the matter of broadband. The UK needs to have reliable broadband everywhere so everyone has access. Emphasis on reliable - no one wants buffering mid-way through a live football match. So not only will broadband need to be pretty much everywhere it will need to be fast enough to handle demand all the time.

S. Korea, US, Japan hold tabletop exercise ahead of 3-way defense talks
South Korea, the United States and Japan held a working-level meeting in Seoul this week in preparation for the next round of Defense Trilateral Talks, the three countries' vice-ministerial-level security dialogue, the Defense Ministry said Thursday. The meeting took place Tuesday and Wednesday at the Defense Ministry headquarters in Yongsan, central Seoul, with participation from Andrew Winternitz, US deputy assistant secretary of defense for East Asia; Woo Kyung-seok, South Korea's deputy director-general for international policy; and Osamu Ashizuka, director for Japan-US defense cooperation at Japan's Ministry of Defense. The meeting included a tabletop exercise in which the three sides discussed coordinated responses to hypothetical regional security scenarios. Following the session, they reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trilateral defense cooperation. The DDT, largely expected in the first half of this year, would mark the 16th edition of the talks and the first under US President Donald Trump's second administration. The previous DTT was held in Seoul on Sept. 10, 2024.

Heart failure warning as people told not to ignore surprisingly common symptom
Hearing impairment increases a person's risk of heart failure, a new study has found. The study found that psychological distress caused by hearing impairment plays a 'notable' role in developing problems with the heart. Experts in China analysed UK Biobank data from 164,431 people who had completed tests designed to determine hearing ability for the study. Of the total, some 160,062 did not wear hearing aids. They were put into three groups based on their performance in a digit triplet test (DTT), which screens for hearing problems by using random combinations of digits against background noise. All of the people initially included in the analysis did not have heart failure, but, over a follow-up period of more than 11 years, some 4,449 developed the condition. Heart failure happens when the heart cannot pump blood effectively, leading to symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, and swelling in the legs and ankles. It estimated that more than one million people in the UK have the long-term condition. The researchers found those who had a higher speech reception threshold (SRT) – meaning they needed louder speech to understand words – had an increased risk of heart failure. They said: 'Compared with those with normal hearing, participants with insufficient hearing, poor hearing, or hearing aid use had higher heart failure risks.' High SRT levels were also associated with psychological distress, social isolation and neuroticism among those who did not wear hearing aids. The researchers added: 'We have been the first to demonstrate that poor hearing ability is significantly associated with a higher risk of incident heart failure in the general population. 'Psychological factors, especially psychological distress, play a significant mediating role in this association. 'If further confirmed, hearing impairment may be a potential risk factor or marker for incident heart failure in the general population, highlighting the importance of integrating hearing health assessments into broader cardiovascular risk evaluation frameworks. 'Moreover, strengthening psychological intervention in people with hearing impairment may be an important path and strategy to reduce the risk of heart failure.'
