Dessie Farrell hails 'warrior' Ciaran Kilkenny after Dublin's win over Galway
DUBLIN 1-18 GALWAY 2-14 Dessie Farrell hailed 'warrior' Ciaran Kilkenny as Tom Lahiff came off the bench to hit a dramatic after-the-hooter winner at Pearse Stadium in this Round 1 All-Ireland encounter. Dublin's last gasp score came in the final play of a fracious, messy and pulsating affair in Salthill, after Matthew Tierney had fisted an equalizer for Galway. There was only time for one more play and with the kickout vital, Stephen Cluxton hit a driven raker straight up to the middle to Lahiff. Dublin held the ball until after the hooter was gone before working it to unlikely hero Lahiff. The St. Jude's man, left out of the starting line-up after the shock Leinster semi-final defeat by Meath, struck it over the bar off his right foot to signal the end of the game and what Galway boss Padraic Joyce labelled "a tough one to take." 'It was fairly nerve-wracking at the end there,' said Dublin manager Dessie Farrell. 'We seemed to be wilting at one stage in the second half there, fellas going down with cramp - a couple of injuries, blisters in the feet. 'It seemed to be all happening. Just delighted how we hung on in there and a little bit of composure at the end saw us out. 'A huge kick-out. Big, big press coming from Galway. They're big men out around that middle third, and it's very difficult to find the pockets (for kickouts). 'You could see they (Galway) had the bit between their teeth and were going for it. In fairness to Stephen, he picked out Tom Lahiff and secured possession. 'Ultimately, I think the game was won in that single play there. Once the hooter went, I always felt we'd get a shot off. Whether it was going to go over or not is another thing. 'In fairness to Tom again, great composure at the end, steadied himself and slotted it over.' Lahiff was the hero, but Ciaran Kilkenny was outstanding as Dublin overcame the second half losses of Con O'Callaghan (44 minutes) and Sean Bugler (60 minutes) to injury to get the win. Cluxton was excellent, also making two big first half saves to thwart Cian Hernon and Shane Walsh. Speaking about Kilkenny's display, where he hit two points, won four kickouts and had a hand in four more scores, Farrell said: 'He was a warrior. 'He got cramp early enough in the second half. Generally, when a player gets cramp, there's only one thing happening and he's coming off in a matter of minutes. 'We'd a slip written for him, but he was able to dig it out and keep going and keep going. It's very unusual to see that, but that's the type of boyo he is. 'He was excellent. Con was really good in the first half. A lot of the young lads as well. It's a big step up for a lot of fellas. We're down to the serious stuff now at this stage. 'A lot of the young players did really well. Peadar O Cofaigh in the middle I thought had a great game as well. On days like this, brave men are wanted and we had a lot of lads standing up.' There was plenty of needle and niggle in this one as two of the real heavyweights of the game went at it in a repeat of last year's All-Ireland quarter-final, where Galway shocked Dublin at Croke Park. Galway's big guns didn't really fire with Footballer of the Year, Paul Conroy and Shane Walsh - back for his first action in weeks - both removed, while the likes of Dylan McHugh and Liam Silke were quiet in an attacking capacity. The Tribe were flat all over the field for long spells, bar Cillian McDaid, who was everywhere, Rob Finnerty who hit 1-6 and John Maher who powered into the game in the closing stages. But Dublin were the better side for most of it. Goals kept Galway in it, with the first from Matthew Thompson just after half-time and the second coming from Finnerty after McDaid's point effort had dropped short and Tierney kept it alive, palming it across goal. Dublin led by four points after a big first half in which they dominated all over the field. Killian McGinnis shot two first half points with Con O'Callaghan weighing in with three, one off the left, one off the right and a fisted effort. They had the Galway kickout in massive trouble and O Cofaigh Byrne had a big game, quietening Cein Darcy for a lot of it, after his recent fine form on restarts. Lorcan O'Dell's three second half points were key for Dublin as they kept Galway at arm's length. Galway have to go to Derry next, while Dublin are at home to Armagh, a game that will presumably be at Croke Park. Speaking afterwards Padraic Joyce said: 'It was a disappointing one to be honest, a hard one to take in the end there. 'Fair play to Dublin. They came down with a plan for the game. They beat us by a point. It's a tough one to take, yeah. Especially (when) we got ourselves into a position to win the game. 'But I think we just dealt with the high pressure situations in Castlebar but we didn't really do that tonight. We gave the ball away three times in our last seven attacks which wasn't like us in fairness. 'But look, I have to commend the lads for their heart and effort in the second half there. They were four points down against the wind and they came out and showed great heart, great commitment.' Dublin overcome fast Meath start to secure latest Leinster title on the back of Hannah Tyrrell brilliance
DUBLIN produced a stirring final-quarter display to deny Meath and claim their 12th consecutive Leinster SFC title. The game took place as part of a double-header with And this was a drama-filled contest as well. Four points adrift, Dublin registered an unanswered haul of 0-8 in the closing 15 minutes to keep a firm grip on the provincial prize. Earlier, Emma Duggan, with two, Vikki Wall, Marion Farrelly and Ciara Smyth all found the target as Shane McCormack's Meath pulled five points clear in a blistering start. Dublin finally got up and running through the reliable Hannah Tyrrell — who finished with 1-4 — just shy of the first-quarter mark. Read More On GAA And while Meath responded with a pair of Duggan frees, Tyrrell had Dublin back in contention when she hit the back of the net on 21 minutes. After a second goal from Eilish O'Dowd, Wall and Caoimhe O'Connor traded scores. Raiding corner-back Niamh Donlon then kicked an excellent 29th-minute point to hand the Jackies a slender 2-3 to 0-8 interval cushion. Dublin introduced Carla Rowe and Kate Sullivan on the resumption to join first-half sub Sinead Goldrick. Most read in GAA Football But it was Meath who made the brighter start to the second period as Niamh Gallogly smashed home a superb 32nd-minute goal. Although Niamh Hetherton and Sullivan did find the range at the opposite end, a Duggan point from play in between both efforts ensured the Royals were in the ascendancy. Henry Shefflin hilariously dabbles in Gaelic football punditry as RTE's Saturday Game debuts format change The dynamic Dunboyne duo of Duggan and Wall were dovetailing to excellent effect. They combined for three points to help the Royals establish a 1-12 to 2-5 buffer moving into the final quarter. But Dublin were determined to hold on to their provincial crown. And after Tyrrell kicked three points on the bounce, Rowe restored parity from a free on the stroke of 50 minutes. 1 Dublin captain Carla Rowe lifts The Mary Ramsbottom Cup after her side's 2-13 to 1-12 victory The momentum was now with the defending champions — and thanks to successive points from play by Hetherton, Goldrick, Rowe and Sullivan, they pushed on to retain their title. Irish PM says too early to consider supporting businesses hit by tariffs
DUBLIN, April 3 (Reuters) - Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin said on Thursday it was still too early to consider supporting businesses hit by President Donald Trump's import tariffs of 20% but that he expected talks with the U.S. on the impact of the levies. "It's somewhat early yet to be talking in terms of supports (for businesses)," Martin told a press conference. "I think this is not the end of the story... I anticipate negotiations, I believe there will be negotiations."
