Bills Moving This Potential Trade Candidate Could Solve Buffalo's Big Problem

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Buffalo Bills, led by MVP Josh Allen, are one of the best teams in the league with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations. But the Bills still have moves to make. The price of having such a talented roster is reflected on the payroll. The Bills have the least amount of salary cap space right now. In fact, they're the only team in the NFL with negative space at the moment. It wouldn't be surprising to see Buffalo make a significant move to address that issue before Week 1. Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox recently listed defensive tackle DaQuan Jones as a potential trade candidate ahead of the regular season, and the idea makes a lot of sense. ORCHARD PARK, NEW YORK - DECEMBER 29: A general view of the helmets worn by Buffalo Bills players for a game against the New York Jets at Highmark Stadium on December 29, 2024 in Orchard... ORCHARD PARK, NEW YORK - DECEMBER 29: A general view of the helmets worn by Buffalo Bills players for a game against the New York Jets at Highmark Stadium on December 29, 2024 in Orchard Park, New York. More Timothy"Like the Ravens, the Buffalo Bills have realistic dreams of a Super Bowl in 2025. However, they also face one of the worst cap situations in the league. No team has to shed more salary before August 26 than Buffalo," Knox wrote. "This means they will face some difficult decisions in the coming weeks. They should make one of them now and place defensive tackle DaQuan Jones on the trade block. "While Ogunjobi faces a six-game suspension to start the season, the Bills have enough depth to at least see what Jones might bring in return. Moving the final year of his contract would save $7.8 million in cap space." Trading Jones makes too much sense for the Bills not to entertain the idea. Buffalo added to its defensive line during the offseason with free agency and the NFL draft. These additions provide more than enough depth while Larry Ogunjobi is facing a six-game suspension. Clearing nearly $8 million by trading Jones would be much more beneficial for Buffalo than keeping him on the roster as a rotational lineman. Buffalo Bills roster questions and concerns: Defense

This is the second edition in a series exploring questions and concerns regarding the Buffalo Bills roster heading into the 2025 season. It's a quiet time in the offseason, so it makes sense to examine the Bills' 91-man roster before training camp commences. Next, Bills Wire will examine the Bills defense. Here are five concerns regarding Buffalo's offense at this point in the offseason: Can Joey Bosa stay healthy? Bosa was one of Buffalo's major offseason acquisitions, signing the former Charger to a one-year, $12 million deal. Bosa has missed substantial time, dressing in only 28-of-50 games over the past three seasons. The hope is that Bosa can return to his double-digit sack output, a figure he hasn't hit since 2021. His tenure in Buffalo has started ominously, as he has already missed time during OTAs with a calf injury. Still, his skill set is worth the gamble for Buffalo. With Bosa joining a 4-3 defense, a scheme in which he thrived early in his career, good things could happen for the he's on the field. How will the interior of the defensive line play out? Ed Oliver is entrenched as the top defensive tackle for the Bills. After Oliver, there's a bit to be worked out during camp. DaQuan Jones has been good, but there's a feeling that the Bills could use a little bit more from him as a 1-tech defender. Injuries have hindered Jones's production. Buffalo brought in Larry Ogunjobi, but he will miss the first six games due to a league-imposed suspension. The bottom of the depth chart will get very interesting, as the Bills invested two draft picks at the position: T.J. Sanders in the second round and Deone Walker in the fourth round. In addition, the Bills return DeWayne Carter, a 2024 third-round pick, in the fold as well. Will the Bills get a full season out of Matt Milano? Milano has been one of the best off-ball linebackers in the NFL throughout his career. However, Milano has also missed substantial time due to multiple injuries. Milano has played in only nine games over the past two years, following his first-team All-Pro breakout in 2022. Last year, Dorian Williams filled in admirably for Milano. However, the duo of Milano and Terrel Bernard is a special pairing. When they are on the field, Milano and Bernard help keep this defense settled and under control. Who will be CB2? Christian Benford has ascended as the Bills top lockdown cornerback. Now, the player starting opposite him will be an intriguing matchup to watch. Buffalo drafted Maxwell Hairston in the first round of this April's draft. The Kentucky product has the inside track at grabbing the second starting spot at cornerback for the Bills. Hairston's speed is his strongest aspect, as he may be tasked with defending some of the fastest receivers in the game. The Bills also brought in Tre'Davious White. The cornerback is working toward his All-Pro status after falling out of favor with the Rams last year. White did well with the Ravens, but it remains to be seen if he can physically match his play from earlier in his career. A dark horse candidate in the race is Dane Jackson, who is also returning for his second stint in Buffalo. What is going on with the safeties? Many speculated that the Bills would upgrade the safety position during the offseason. However, Buffalo largely remained quiet on this front. The Bills return Demar Hamlin, Taylor Rapp, and Cole Bishop from last year's group. In addition, the Bills made a low-risk free agent signing, bringing in Derrick Forrest from Washington on a one-year deal. Buffalo drafted Jordan Hancock in the fifth round as well. This team loves versatility with their safeties. Exploring the scheme that Buffalo used when veterans Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer were on the roster, the Bills like their safeties to be able to play both free and strong safety. The players who can best fulfill this seemingly hybrid role will get the most time on the field. This could be one of the most intriguing roster battles to follow in the summer. 2025 Buffalo Bills training camp insight: Defensive tackles

The Buffalo Bills are moving into their next major offseason phase in due time: Training camp. The Bills will kick off their 2025 training camp on July 23 at St. John Fisher University. As with every offseason, Bills Wire will examine each position group ahead of this pivotal time on the football calendar. Our 2025 defensive tackles preview can be found below: At the top The Bills love to rotate their players along the defensive line. However, the one player that stands out among this group is Ed Oliver. The former ninth-overall draft pick has shown moments of dominance and disruption against interior lines. Oliver's athleticism is well documented. Oliver took a bit of a step back last year, seeing his tackles and sack totals drop from an outstanding 2023 season. The leading player to saddle up next to Oliver as a 1-tech tackle is DaQuan Jones. Jones had 23 total tackles and 2.5 sacks last year. Depth chart Buffalo has a bevy of options to add as part of their rotation. The Bills signed Larry Ogunjobi in free agency. However, Ogunjobi will miss the first six games of the season due to a PED suspension. Buffalo drafted TJ Sanders and Deone Walker in this year's draft. The Bills also return 2024 third-round pick DeWayne Carter as well. Carter flashed at times as a rookie, but he will need to make a major step forward to see snaps with the added competition. Zion Logue, Casey Rogers, and Marcus Harris round out the defensive tackles group. In 2025... Buffalo will rely on this group extensively this year. Buffalo needs this group to consistently win battles and dominate opposing offensive linemen. It's no longer good enough to have flashes of great play--this unit needs to be a massive problem on a snap-by-snap basis. The ripple effect will be monumental on the remainder of the defense. Simply put, Buffalo needs the 2023 version of Ed Oliver to be present this year. Oliver set a career-best with 9.5 sacks that season. DaQuan Jones needs to eat blockers to allow the athleticism of linebackers and edge rushers to make plays. It will be an interesting competition as the training camp unfolds. With the Bills so close to the promised land, a great deal of their success will rely on how this group disrupts opposing offensive lines. We are leaning toward the idea that this group can create a bigger disruption and get more consistent results than other groups from previous defenses. If they can, the AFC Championship game will not be the end of the season for Buffalo. This article originally appeared on Bills Wire: 2025 Buffalo Bills training camp insight: Defensive tackles

30 most important Bills players of 2025: No. 25 DaQuan Jones

As the Buffalo Bills prepare for the 2025 NFL season, we'll take a look at the most important contributors on their roster. They have a ton of cornerstone players who will be returning for another shot at bringing a Lombardi Trophy to Buffalo, and they'll have help from some new additions as well. Leading up to the season, we will be counting down the top 30 most important players on the roster. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to what they'll offer in 2025, and tackle the most pressing questions surrounding them this coming year. Next up on the countdown is defensive tackle DaQuan Jones. Background Position: DT Age at start of season: 33 Experience: 12th year 2025 cap hit: $9,408,000 2024 recap DaQuan Jones had a bit of a down year in 2024 when it comes to stopping the run, which is what he's been known for during his time in the NFL. He received a 50.3 run defense grade from Pro Football Focus, which ranked 122nd out of 219 interior defensive linemen. He did rank 20th in terms of pass-rush grade with a 73.7. He started 19 games in 2024 including all three playoff games, recording 2.5 sacks to go with 29 tackles and seven QB hits. 2025 outlook Jones remains a vital part of the Bills defense and especially as a tone setter on the interior of the line. He'll have some more help in the middle this year with the additions of rookies T.J. Sanders and Deone Walker, as well as free-agent signing Larry Ogunjobi. It appears the Bills will be leaning even deeper into the defensive line rotations that they are known for, and even though Jones still has some pop left at age 33, keeping those legs fresh and letting some younger guys get reps will help in the long run. Jones will serve as the starter in the middle and a leader for the newcomers. Biggest question: What does he have left in the tank? Jones will turn 34 in December and is entering his 12th season in the pros. He's made over $50 million in his career, and he's garnered a reputation for being a run-stuffer in the middle of the defense. We saw a bit of a decline in that role last year, but we're expecting him to level out his play this coming year. Going into last year he was named a top-32 defensive tackle in the NFL by PFF, but how long can he keep it up for? Having the young guns come in and share some snaps will help keep him fresh. He's entering the final year of his contract in 2025. 30 Most Important Bills of 2025 Check back as we continue to countdown on our list of the 30 most important Bills ahead of the 2025 season. No. 30 DT T.J. Sanders, No. 29 LB Dorian Williams, No. 28 DT Larry Ogunjobi, No. 27 Alec Anderson, No. 26 DE A.J. Epenesa.
