Toyota sees record global sales despite Trump's tariff turmoil
[TOKYO] Toyota Motor saw record global sales during the first half of 2025 as strong demand for hybrid vehicles in core markets helped offset headwinds from US President Donald Trump's tariffs on cars imported to the US. Toyota's global sales, including that of subsidiaries Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors, rose 7.4 per cent to more than 5.5 million units between January and June, the company said on Wednesday (Jul 30). That's mostly due to strong demand in the US, Japan and China. Production grew 8.8 per cent to 5.5 million units during the period, including a nearly 20 per cent jump in domestic output. The carmaker's sales were bolstered in the early part of the year by a last-minute rush from customers to lock-in purchases before Trump's 25 per cent tariff on car imports. While that sparked uncertainty across the global auto sector, Japan's carmakers may be better placed than rivals following a trade pact reached this month that will see just a 15 per cent duty on vehicles imported to the US. Toyota's shares climbed 14 per cent on Jul 23 in response to the deal. The US is the biggest export market for Japanese carmakers, with US$40.8 billion worth sold there last year and additional models imported from factories in Canada or Mexico. Toyota, which was set to face the biggest hit from tariffs among its peers, has said it hopes for improved ties between the US and Japan, and called for further reductions in duties. The carmaker said that in June, global sales rose 2.7 per cent to 937,246 units. Production increased 7.7 per cent to 963,455 units. While a rebound in the popularity of hybrids has helped its bottom line, Toyota and other legacy brands face intense competition from a wave of electric vehicle (EV) makers, led by Elon Musk's Tesla and China's BYD. Toyota has sold about 82,000 battery EVs so far this year, almost all of which were delivered to customers outside of Japan. BLOOMBERG

Japan's vehicle market expands by 4% in May
Japan's new vehicle market expanded by 4% year-on-year to 324,064 units in May 2025 from 312,406 units in the same month last year, according to registration data released by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. The country's vehicle market last month continued to recover from weak year-earlier levels, when Daihatsu Motor - Toyota Motor's small car subsidiary - was forced to halt production of a number of key models following its widely covered safety test rigging scandal. This also affected other affiliated brands, including Mazda and Subaru. In the first five months of 2025, the market expanded by 11% to 1,952,294 units after falling by 15% to 1,753,891 in the same period last year, with sales of passenger cars rising by 12% to 1,660,261 units and truck sales increasing by 10% to 287,068 units, while sales of medium and large buses and coaches surged by 15% to 4,965 units. Toyota's domestic sales rose by 16% to 604,919 units year-to-date, while Daihatsu's sales surged by 150% to 211,866 units from very depressed year-earlier levels, and Mazda's volumes rebounded by 18% to 69,865 units. Brands not affected by last year's production stoppages did not perform as well in this period, including Suzuki which saw its sales fall slightly to 315,124 units, while Honda's sales were down by 4% to 270,440 units, and Nissan's sales declined by over 11% to 185,449 units. Overseas brands account for just 4% of total vehicle sales in Japan year-to-date, led by German automakers including Mercedes-Benz, BMW-Mini, Audi and Volkswagen. Toyota sales hit second monthly record on US demand, tariff rush
[TOKYO] Toyota Motor's sales hit a record for the second month in a row as a strong showing in the US and Japan was boosted by customers making last-minute purchases before US President Donald Trump's tariffs took effect. The automaker's global sales, including from subsidiaries Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors, reached 936,718 units in April, a 12 per cent increase from a year earlier year and a record for the month, the company said on Thursday (May 29). Production came in at 902,425 units worldwide. Toyota and Lexus brand sales jumped 10 per cent in the US last month thanks to steady demand and an influx in orders as duties on imported cars and parts kicked in. The scuffle caused by Trump's oscillating trade war has forced the world's biggest carmaker and its peers to weigh semi-permanent countermeasures to stem short-term turmoil. A 25 per cent tariff was applied in April to all cars imported to the US, but on Thursday Trump's global tariffs were deemed illegal and blocked by the US trade court. The Trump administration said it was going to appeal the ruling. Japanese carmakers are heavily reliant on the US auto market and could suffer as much as a US$19 billion impact from the tariffs. Toyota, which has forecast a 180 billion yen (S$1.6 billion) hit in April and May alone, has mostly stayed its course, emphasising that it will respond flexibility but refrain from big changes until the future is less opaque. chief executive officer Koji Sato earlier this month said the company will consider building out local product development and manufacturing in the US in the medium to long term. In March, Toyota's US sales rose 8 per cent from a year earlier while Honda Motor recorded a 13 per cent jump, and Nissan Motor's rose 10 per cent. Mazda Motor said it will pause US production of one model variation that it exports to Canada. Honda plans to shift manufacturing of the hybrid version of its Civic from Japan to the US, while Nissan is halting US orders for SUVs built in Mexico. BLOOMBERG

In the first quarter of the year, the market expanded by almost 14% to 1,285,351 units from 1,131,140 a year earlier, with sales of passenger cars rising by 14% to 1,103,666 units, while truck sales increased by 11% to 178,086 units and sales of medium and large buses and coaches surged by 23% to 3,599 units.
