Browns Trade Defensive Key in Latest Offseason Suggestion

While the Cleveland Browns are potentially focused on taking a step forward with its offense in next month's NFL Draft, it's the defense that could still see some changes. As trades are wildly speculated on this summer, there's one move that makes sense for the Browns from a financial standpoint. Advertisement During the regular season last year as we approached the NFL trade deadline, many thought Cleveland corner Greg Newsome would be dealt due to his contract situation. Ward is scheduled to make $13.377 million next season in the final year of his four-year deal. Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox wrote that Newsome could be gone this offseason. "As previously mentioned, the Browns are entering a rebuilding phase and should be looking to shed salary," Knox wrote. "They could save $13.4 million in cap space by dealing Newsome, which is precisely why the 49ers should see if he can be acquired. San Francisco still has $21.7 million in available cap space." Advertisement Newsome took a small step back last season after showing much promise through this first three. Part of that is due to injury issues as he played just 13 of 17 games, and he has yet to play a full season in his pro career. Browns Possible Draft Target Reveals Thoughts on Quarterback

The Cleveland Browns could potentially solve their quarterback issues with the No. 2 pick in next month's NFL Draft. But then again, they could also bolster the offensive line with Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter. Carter is widely considered to be the best player available in the upcoming draft that's not a quarterback. But he does have some hot takes on the quarterback position. 'Those great defensive players, you look in the history, they can impact the game just as much as a quarterback,' Carter said, via Brooke Pryor of 'There's been defensive players who've taken over a game right at the end of Super Bowl in those playoffs scenes where you really need that great defensive player and he also makes people around him better. Advertisement "So I feel like just saying that, seeing how defensive players can take over a game, we're just like a quarterback.' While Miami quarterback Cam Ward is expected to go No. 1 to the Tennessee Titans, no one seems to know what Cleveland is thinking with the No. 2 picks. Before the NFL Scouting Combine, it seemed like Colorado's Shedeur Sanders was a lock to go to the Browns with the pick. Browns Rumors Explode After Veteran Quarterback Visits Cleveland Restaurant

The Cleveland Browns still have not figured out their quarterback situation for the 2025 season, much to the frustration of fans. Deshaun Watson, after already having fallen out of favor with Browns fans, tore his Achilles tendon for the second time in three months back in January, meaning he'll miss part or all of next season while recovering. Cleveland has been linked to a young signal caller in next month's NFL Draft, but their favorite, Miami's Cam Ward, is expected to go to the Tennessee Titans with the first overall pick. Advertisement That could leave Colorado's Shedeur Sanders available, but recent reports leave the Browns wondering if he's the answer. There is another possibility, and that's signing a free agent veteran or trading for one. There has been speculation about the Browns trading for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins, but that's unlikely to happen until after the draft. That speculation was perpetuated even further when Cousins was recently spotted in a Cleveland-area Chipotle restaurant. A photo was posted on X that showed Cousins with fans at what was labeled in the photo as a Westlake Chipotle. Westlake is a suburb of Cleveland. Advertisement "Kirk cousins currently at Westlake Chipotle #Browns," the post read. The most curious part of this is that Cousins replied to the post with apparently his favorite menu item at Chipotle, "Salad with double chicken never fails me," replied Cousins. It should be noted that Cousins has a massive contract that the Browns would have to take on in order to trade for the veteran. Last offseason, Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million deal with the Falcons with $100 million guaranteed and an average salary of $45 million per season. Cousins will hold a $40 million cap hit in 2025 a $57.5 million cap hit in both 2026 and 2027. Advertisement That would be in addition to the $92 million the Browns still owe Watson - all fully guaranteed - from his contract.
