Mirror Daily Digest - Liverpool suspect pictured to Starmer-Farage fallout

In this Thursday's Mirror Daily Digest, we've pulled together the biggest stories of the day from pictures of the man accused of driving into fans in Liverpool to Keir Starmer's insult at Nigel Farage Welcome to the Mirror's Daily Digest, where we'll be pulling together all the biggest stories of the day from our News, Showbiz, Health teams and more. This Thursday, we're featuring everything from the man accused of ramming his car into crowds at the Liverpool victory parade to Keir Starmer's speech where he branded Nigel Farage" Liz Truss 2.0". We've also got the latest on Eamonn Holmes' health update after the presenter fell off his chair live on GB News, and the new strain of coronavirus which has prompted the World Health Organisation (WHO) to issue an alert. ‌ 'Family man' charged over Liverpool crash horror pictured for first time ‌ This evening, our News team published pictures of the man accused of ramming his car into crowds at the Liverpool victory parade, injuring almost 80 people. Paul Doyle, 53, of West Derby, Liverpool, is accused of dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, wounding with intent to cause injury, and attempting to cause GBH with intent when he ploughed into football fans celebrating Liverpool FC's title win. He is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' court on Friday. The dad of three was finally identified today, as detectives were given more time to quiz him over the incident on Monday night. Police were stationed outside his family home this afternoon, where Doyle lives with his wife and their three sons. Loved-up pictures on social media show the family enjoying various holidays including Disneyland Florida, Dubai and at the beach. ‌ Starmer humiliates Farage with one of worst political insults imaginable This afternoon, our Politics team attended Keir Starmer's speech in the north west where the Prime Minister branded Nigel Farage" Liz Truss 2.0". In a ferocious attack, the PM accused the Reform UK leader of planning a 'mad experiment' that will hammer family finances. ‌ He compared Reform's uncosted pledges to Tory disaster Liz Truss, who triggered market chaos and sent mortgage rates rocketing with her tax-slashing mini-Budget. But Mr Farage hit back, accusing the PM of "Project Fear 2.0". The PM said the promises proved Mr Farage cannot be trusted, saying: "He set out economic plans that contained billion upon billions of pounds of completely unfunded spending, precisely the sort of irresponsible splurge that sent your mortgage costs, your bills and the cost of living through the roof. It's Liz Truss all over again." He added: "What Nigel Farage is doing is Liz Truss 2.0, same promises of billions and billions of pounds in unfunded cuts with exactly the same results. I feel very strongly it's my responsibility to protect working people from being put through that ever again." ‌ Eamonn Holmes issues heartbreaking health update In other news, our Showbiz team covered Eamonn Holmes' heartbreaking health update just days after he fell off his chair live on GB News. It comes after the 65-year-old was taken to the hospital earlier in the month following a fall at his home where he had to ring an ambulance for help. ‌ Sharing his dismay at his ongoing issues, Eamonn took to social media to share a picture of himself looking healthy and sprightly from just three years ago. The presenter said it 'made him sad' to see his decline as he told fans: "I could walk then." In a bid to stay positive, Eamonn added that he was motivated to "redouble my efforts." The presenter has been working hard on his rehabilitation after undergoing spinal surgery in 2022 for chronic back pain caused by three slipped discs. Over the last year he has been seen using a walking aid and a wheelchair as his mobility has become effected. ‌ Mum-of-six 'murdered by wanted man as she walked her dog' An on-the-run man who was living off-grid to avoid being recalled to prison killed a grandmother who was out walking her dog in a "vicious and brutal attack", a court has heard. Anita Rose, 57, was subjected to "numerous kicks, stamps and blows being delivered to her face, head and body", prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC told a trial at Ipswich Crown Court. Roy Barclay, 56, of no fixed address, denies her murder. ‌ Opening the case for the prosecution today, Mr Paxton said mum-of-six Anita left her home in Brantham, Suffolk, to walk her dog Bruce on July 24 last year. She was found by passers-by but died four days later at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge on July 28. Mr Paxton said: "After she left home and before 6.25 that morning, Anita Rose was subject to a vicious and brutal attack with numerous kicks, stamps and blows being delivered to her face, head and body. Found by passers-by, help was called for but on July 28 Anita Rose died in Addenbrooke's Hospital from the injuries she received." ‌ Infectious new Covid strain hits three holiday destinations Meanwhile, our Health team has been following the new strain of coronavirus which has prompted the World Health Organisation (WHO) to issue an alert. The new strain is spreading rapidly in multiple countries, including three destinations popular with UK holidaymakers. An expert has explained the symptoms of the new strain, saying it appears to be able to spread more easily and quickly than previous variants. The WHO has warned over a surge in Covid cases with the new variant now responsible for more than 10 per cent of all infections. The WHO has designated the new strain NB.1.8.1 as a 'variant under monitoring' amid concern about the sharp rise in cases. The strain has been detected in multiple countries, including Australia, the US and possibly the UK.

Mirror's Daily Digest - Arson attack at Diana's home to Liverpool parade miracle

In this Wednesday's Mirror Daily Digest, we've pulled together the biggest stories of the day from the devastating arson attack at Princess Diana's home to the Liverpool parade miracle Welcome to the Mirror's Daily Digest, where we'll be pulling together all the best stories of the day from our News, Showbiz, Royal teams and more. This Wednesday, we're bringing you the biggest stories from the heart of the newsroom, with coverage of the arson attack on a farmhouse at Princess Diana's Althorp House to the baby who miraculously avoided serious physical injury after being dragged 15ft in his buggy by the Liverpool parade car. Our Showbiz team has also been following the inquest into the death of Hollyoaks star Paul Danan, who tragically died on January 15 after taking a cocktail of drugs including cocaine and heroin. We've also got the latest on Nigel Farage being branded a "poisonous man" after the Reform UK leader tried to justify a "racist" advert released by his party. ‌ Paul Danan found dead on sofa by friends with TV still on, inquest hears ‌ Our Showbiz team has been following the inquest into the death of Hollyoaks and reality TV star Paul Danan, who was found unresponsive at his home in Bristol on January 15. The late star, who also appeared in Celebrity Big Brother and Celebrity Love Island, died from a cocktail of drugs, including cocaine and heroin. The inquest heard that friends of Paul raised the alarm after not seeing him. They could not get hold of him for two days before he died, so got a ladder to look through an open window, and a neighbour entered to find him. There he found Paul, dead sitting slumped at the edge of his sofa, with the television still on. Paul's mum, Beverley Danan, paid tribute to her son saying: "Paul helped so many people from all walks of life but just could not help himself in the same way." She added: "His smiling face and love for life will always be remembered." ‌ Coroner Debbie Rookes recorded a conclusion of misadventure. She told the coroner's court in Bristol: "I do not have any evidence before me that Paul planned to take his own life." ‌ This morning, our News team reported on the baby who was dragged 15ft in his buggy by the Liverpool parade car and miraculously avoided serious physical injury. On Monday night, a Ford Galaxy ploughed into pedestrians in the city centre, including Daniel Eveson's infant son and partner. Daniel "thought he had lost everything" when baby Teddy was "chucked" down the road after the impact, while his partner went under the wheel of the vehicle. It has now been confirmed the baby escaped without significant physical harm. A Good Samaritan in a nearby restaurant rushed to make sure Teddy was safe and then looked after the infant while Daniel tended to his spouse, it has now emerged. The dad's partner was taken to hospital, where she spent at least Monday night. ‌ Daniel said: "To me looking and finding his pram. To not knowing if he was alive. To seeing him alive. It was a lot to take on... I thought I had lost everything, I really did." Teddy was "chucked about 15ft down the road" in his pram. It is understood he remained inside the buggy, which buffeted any subsequent impacts. He did not need treatment at hospital, it is believed. ‌ Brit found sleeping rough on Peru street after 'terrifying' ordeal In other news, a British tourist who was feared missing in Peru has been found. Hannah Almond, 32, was on a yoga retreat to the South American country but after being attacked she was found slumped on a pavement by well-wisher friend Piero Villanueva who she had met briefly in Lima earlier in her trip. Hannah travelled to Peru in March on a yoga retreat to "find herself," friends say. However, Hannah lost contact with her friends there and thugs allegedly burned her possessions. She lost her phone, passport and was left penniless after she was attacked in the city of Cusco. ‌ Friends have said that Hannah, a fashion graduate from Grimsby, suffered a mental health crisis after being attacked and may require psychiatric care before flying home. It is said she initially refused to accept assistance, with psychosis triggered by the trauma of being violently robbed leaving her too frightened to engage closely with officials or locals. Piero told a local TV station late yesterday: 'I have just found her. She is safe and well. I'd like to thank the authorities and the people who contacted me to so I could help her. A friend of Hannah is arriving in Cusco today and I'm talking with him to be able to assist her.' In an update on a GoFundMe page set up over the weekend to help bring Hannah back to the UK, a friend Sophie Wallace said: 'Due the help of everyone sharing the story, Hannah has thankfully been found and one of her friends is on the way to Cusco to persuade her to accept support and come home.' ‌ Diana's family left devastated after fire rages at estate where she's buried This afternoon, our Royal team reported on the fire that destroyed a building at the estate where Princess Diana is buried. Taking to social media, the late royal's younger brother Earl Spencer revealed that a farmhouse at Althorp House had been targeted by vandals and had burned down. ‌ In the post, he shared pictures of the blaze as well as the aftermath showing the destroyed building. He penned on X: "Stunned to learn that one of @AlthorpHouse⁩'s farmhouses - fortunately, unoccupied at the time - was apparently burnt down by vandals last night. With thanks to @northantsfire ⁩for doing their very best. So very sad that anyone would think this a fun thing to do." Althorp's conservation manager, Adey Greeno, later shared on the platform that the farmhouse had to be "razed to the ground" for "safety reasons". Althorp has been the ancestral home of the Spencer family for 500 years and it was where Diana grew up after her parents divorced before she married the now King Charles. The 13,500-acre estate was where she was laid to rest after her untimely death in 1997. ‌ Farage savaged as 'poisonous' after defending 'racist' Reform ad Finally, the leader of Scottish Labour has branded Nigel Farage a "poisonous man" after the Reform UK leader tried to justify a "racist" advert released by his party. Our Politics team reported that Mr Farage yesterday defended his party's attack ad which claimed Anas Sarwar, who was born in Glasgow to Pakistani Muslim parents, will "prioritise" Pakistani people. That attack prompted Mr Sarwar to brand the MP a "poisonous man who doesn't understand Scotland". At a press conference that was televised to the nation on Tuesday, Mr Farage played a clip of the Labour politician which he said supposedly justified Reform UK's advert. ‌ But the video did not show Mr Sarwar saying what the ad had claimed, with it instead showing him saying the Pakistani community should be represented in politics. "Pakistanis need (to be) represented in every mainstream political party in Scotland and across the UK," the Scottish MP said in the video. Mr Farage accused the leader of Scottish Labour of introducing "sectarianism into Scottish politics". Mr Sarwar branded Reform UK's attack "a blatant attempt from Nigel Farage to try and poison our politics here in Scotland".

Footage of the incident showed the Ford people carrier drive through a packed crowd of football supporters, injuring nearly 50 people. A total of 20 people were treated for injuries at the scene in Liverpool city centre, with a further 27 taken to hospital. North West Ambulance Service confirmed two people have been seriously injured, including one child. A 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area has been arrested in relation to the incident. Merseyside Police are not treating the crash as an act of terrorism. In a public briefing held this afternoon, Assistant Chief Constable Sims said the driver is believed to have followed an ambulance going to treat a person having a heart attack. He remains in police custody and was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs. Speaking at a press conference, Sims said: "Following the incident yesterday, I can confirm on behalf of the National Health Service that we are aware of 50 people who were treated at hospital for ongoing treatment. Of those 11 remain in hospital for ongoing treatment. They are all in a stable condition, and I am pleased to say that they appear to be recovering well." ‌ Mysterious UK outbreak leaves five in hospital This morning, our Health team reported that five people had been hospitalised and 20 had fallen ill - including 13 children - after an outbreak of salmonella. According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the infection is linked to Salmonella saintpaul, which was the cause of an outbreak in 2023 where 90 people fell ill after eating cantaloupe. ‌ There is no indication that melons are the cause of the current outbreak, which has seen cases in the North West of England, the West Midlands, the South West and the East of England. The UKHSA said people started falling ill on February 20 this year and those affected have ranged from one year old to 88. Gauri Godbole, deputy director of gastrointestinal infections at the UKHSA, said: "UKHSA is investigating a small outbreak of Salmonella and no cases have been identified since March 2025. "Gastrointestinal bacteria, such as Salmonella, can be spread from person to person as well as from food, so anyone with diarrhoea or vomiting should wash their hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and avoid handling food or preparing food for others where possible. Please avoid returning to work or sending unwell children to school or nursery until at least 48 hours after symptoms have cleared." ‌ X Factor finalist gives birth In other news, an X Factor finalist has announced the birth of her first child in a touching Instagram post. She wrote on Instagram: "The best secret we've ever kept… Myself and Eddie would like to introduce our daughter. Pearl McQueen. Born 23.05.25 at 10:11am weighing a little chunky 8.12lbs. "9 months of carrying you Pearl and being in our little pregnancy bubble. Now you are finally here. We've had a bit of a rough start but we're on the mend now. I cannot thank all the midwife's, nurses and consultants at James Cook hospital enough for looking after us both. I'll forever be grateful. Baby Pearl, you have made all our dreams come true." ‌ Lionesses legend Mary Earps in England retirement shock Football fans woke up to the shock news that England goalkeeper Mary Earps has announced a retirement from international football. The decision comes just weeks before the Euro 2025, where the 53-cap star was set to feature in Sarina Wiegman's squad in Switzerland. Earps became an icon in the Lionesses net as she won Euro 2022 and helped England to the World Cup final in consectutive years. The ex- Manchester United shotstopper was named Best FIFA Women's goalkeeper in 2022 and 2023 and was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2023 too. ‌ Announcing her retirement, Earps said: 'I have taken the difficult decision to retire internationally. It has been the greatest honour and privilege of my life, to wear this badge, represent my country and play alongside such an incredible group of players. 'I've spent a long time making this decision and it's not one I've made lightly. For me, ultimately this is the right time for me to step aside and give the younger generation an opportunity to thrive. Winning the EUROs in 2022 was the best day of my life, and I'm rooting for the girls to do it again this summer." Wiegman had planned to select Earps for a place in her squad this summer and saw an important role for the goalkeeper. The Dutch boss admitted she was disappointed with the decision but would happily pay tribute to her charge later this summer. ‌ Exact date mini heatwave set to hit UK After a damp bank holiday weekend, Brits could soon be soaking in the sunshine with temperatures expected to soar to 25C. The return of the mini heatwave follows a recent spell of hot and dry weather where a high pressure system dominated. ‌ Maps from Ventusky are turning orange again by Saturday, May 31, especially for the southeast which will be warmest and these higher temperatures are expected to last into the start of next week. Met Office Meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: 'This week we could see temperatures push to the low 20s in the south, and at the end of the week we can see drier and more settled weather develop in southern England and Wales.' And the outlook from the weather agency for Thursday to Saturday reads: 'Further spells of rain are expected over the next few days, mainly in the north. Sunny spells and scattered showers in the south, and turning increasingly warm.' While BBC weather forecaster Ben Rich said that temperatures could hit the mid-20Cs in the south of England at the end of the week. 'For Friday many areas will see some dry weather and some spells of sunshine but it could well be that our next weather system starts to approach bringing some cloud and some rain in from the west,' he said 'It could be a warm feeling day on Friday with temperatures of 17C to 24C. High pressure tries to hold on across the south and the south east, at the same time low pressure tries to return from the northwest.'

Comet was founded in Hull in 1933 and started out selling batteries and radios, and grew to become a high street giant.
