Chobani acquires US frozen-foods maker Daily Harvest
US-based yoghurt and creamers maker Chobani has bought local frozen-foods business Daily Harvest. In a joint statement sent to Just Food, the companies said the deal, struck for an undisclosed sum, marked Chobani's 'entry into wholesome, ready-to-make meals'. Founded in 2015, Daily Harvest sells frozen, single-serve products, including smoothies, breakfast bowls and savoury meals. Set up as a direct-to-consumer business, Daily Harvest still sells products through its website but also through retailers including Target, Kroger and Wegmans. In 2017, it secured an investment from movie star Gwyneth Paltrow and tennis champion Serena Williams. In their statement, Chobani and Daily Harvest said they 'are united by a shared vision: to make high-quality, delicious food with real ingredients more accessible'. They added: "With Chobani's world-class manufacturing, distribution and retail expertise, our goal is for Daily Harvest to reach every home in America." Just Food asked Chobani for more details on the deal, including how much the company paid, how many staff are joining the business and where it sees the best growth opportunities for its new asset. In a post on LinkedIn, Rachel Drori, Daily Harvest's founder and executive chair, said: 'Chobani is the perfect home for Daily Harvest – our missions align so deeply, and we couldn't be more excited to continue growing together.' In a blog post, Daily Harvest reassured customers "all the things you love will stay the same' including its products, website and 'care team'. The acquisition follows Chobani's recent investments in production. Last month, the company announced a $1.2bn investment in a new 1.4 million square foot production facility in Rome, a city in Oneida County, New York. The plant, Chobani's third in the US, will house up to 28 production lines and process around 12 million pounds of milk daily. In March, Chobani announced a $500m expansion project at its facility in Twin Falls, Idaho. The company plans to add over 500,000ft2 to the site, which produces Chobani yoghurt, oat milk and coffee creamers. The investment is set to increase production capacity by 50%. The deal for Daily Harvest is Chobani's latest move to broaden its product portfolio via M&A. In December, the company acquired US coffee business La Colombe for $900m. Chobani buys plant-based food maker Daily Harvest
This story was originally published on Food Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Food Dive newsletter. Chobani is buying plant-based food maker Daily Harvest as the Greek yogurt giant expands its reach into ready-to-make meals. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Daily Harvest was founded a decade ago, becoming one of the first businesses to ship clean, nutritious food directly to customers' doorsteps. Since then, the company has expanded its portfolio to include meals and snacks that are available online and in retail. Chobani said it aims to use its 'world-class manufacturing, distribution, and retail expertise' to get Daily Harvest into more U.S. homes. 'These two purpose-led brands are united by a shared vision: to make high-quality, delicious food made with real ingredients more accessible,' Chobani and Daily Harvest said in a statement. While Chobani's roots are in yogurt, the New York-based company has set out to broaden its portfolio through internal innovation and by looking for acquisitions. It developed its own oat milk and creamers before spending $900 million in 2023 to purchase ready-to-drink coffee manufacturer La Colombe. The addition of Daily Harvest, which makes organic smoothies, breakfast bowls, protein powders and frozen meals, will significantly broaden Chobani's mission of becoming a more well-rounded food company. Chobani will not only add new healthy food products to the mix but also give shoppers more items to choose from, increasing opportunities to keep consumers in its portfolio throughout the day. A consumer could have one of Chobani's yogurts and a La Colombe coffee with a Chobani creamer in the morning, before transitioning to a Daily Harvest protein smoothie, pasta or vegetable dish later in the day. The purchase also gives Chobani a presence for the first time in the multi-billion frozen section of the grocery store, moving the brand beyond its long-time home in the dairy aisle. Despite efforts to increase its exposure beyond dairy, Chobani hasn't forgotten about the segment closely associated with the company. In April, Chobani announced it would spend $1.2 billion to build a dairy processing plant in upstate New York, the largest facility investment by the company in its history. The investment came a month after Chobani announced it was spending $500 million to expand production by 50% at its facility in Twin Falls, Idaho. Chobani Enters Ready-to-Eat Meal Market With Daily Harvest Deal
Chobani LLC bought ready-to-eat meal maker Daily Harvest Inc. for an undisclosed amount as it continues its expansion beyond yogurt into more areas of the grocery store. The deal was disclosed in LinkedIn posts by both companies. Daily Harvest has been working to rebuild its reputation after a 2022 recall of a lentil dish linked to gastrointestinal illness, which led to a nearly $23 million class action settlement last year.

David Watsky/CNET These offers were valid at the time of publication, but they can end at any time and may be restricted by geography and other cookie-based conditions in your browser. If you don't see a deal populate, try in a new window or private browser. In the meantime, if you've already tried one or more of these, tell me which ones and what you liked or didn't like. My advice: Take advantage of one of these offers (making sure to pause or cancel after, unless you want to continue). I restested EveryPlate and it's still my favorite cheap meal kit service. David Watsky/CNET Virtually all of the services we tried allow you to pause or cancel any time just in case you don't love it, so there's almost no risk after the deal is up, but you may have to unsubscribe from their email blasts. Most brands just want you to try out the meals and see if you dig them and those brands are willing to make it very easy (and cheap) to do that. To make things easier, we already tried the top meal kits and meal delivery services so you'll know exactly what to expect and you can pick the best food delivery deal for you and your tastes.

Daily Harvest Review: Good Meals for Single Vegans Who Don't Mind Mush
Unlike Thistle or Purple Carrot, which use mostly plastic packaging, the majority of Daily Harvest meals are in more sustainable cardboard bowls and packaging. The exceptions are frozen pastas, which come in freezer-safe plastic bags, and small plastic lids for liquids like smoothies. The meals arrive in a package on ice, and since they're frozen, there's virtually no cutoff date for use, which makes this service convenient, if only just to have a stockpile for lazy days. Daily Harvest isn't like other meal services with strict once-a-week deliveries; you can change your delivery day via app or online to a later date. Although, if there are no available dates for the upcoming week, you'll need to wait until the next week. Once scheduled, you'll get an email confirmation, but you can still modify your choices, schedule, and plan, including skipping deliveries. Because it's an automated meal plan delivery service, you'll automatically be beholden to a weekly plan, which can be adjusted, and you'll see your next five orders online or on the app. Luckily, Daily Harvest doesn't have duration minimums, but if you want to cancel, you'll have to do it the week before your next order cutoff to avoid being charged. I Miss Crunchy Veggies I will say, when you eat Daily Harvest, you can tell it's trying to be healthy. Which is not a bad thing! I'm vegan, after all; I love vegetables! But sometimes I want to feel like I'm eating an actual rich pasta bolognese and not a vegan version Frankensteined with hemp seeds and black lentils. I also didn't realize that I was such a texture person. I will give credit: Daily Harvest is aware that living only on reheated or blended foods can be a challenge, and it does try to add sturdier root veggies or things like legumes or seeds when possible, to provide some textural variance. But at the end of the day, I missed the crunch, bitterness, and just aliveness of greens. Many of the pasta and harvest bowls were a little one-note, and I found myself consistently adding more texture with tortilla chips or crackers, along with heavy dashes of salt, pepper, lemon juice, and sometimes hot sauce for more flavor variety.
