Millions of people in Florida and the Southeast are keeping a close eye on the weather forecast that could halt outdoor and beach plans across the region over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. In addition to the precipitation, the National Hurricane Center expects to be monitoring an area of disturbed weather for tropical development, which will become the main focus for forecasters through the weekend and into next week. Regardless of tropical development, Florida is expected to see additional flooding rain and thunderstorms through the foreseeable future. The first major surge of monsoonal moisture across southern Nevada on Tuesday brought widespread disruptions to the Las Vegas Valley, unleashing near-hurricane-force wind gusts that toppled trees, downed powerlines and contributed to a large fire that killed several animals. The National Weather Service office in Las Vegas issued the first Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Clark County at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time, alerting residents that developing storm cells had the potential to cause damage to roofs, trees and other structures due to strong winds. Although radar data showed limited rainfall, the damage reported across the region was linked to what meteorologists later confirmed were "virga bombs" or "dry microbursts." Flossie strengthened into a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) on Tuesday, but forecasters say the powerful storm will begin to rapidly weaken on Wednesday as it continues to move away from southwestern Mexico. The National Hurricane Center said maximum sustained winds within Flossie have increased to 115 mph with higher gusts, and some additional strengthening is possible through Wednesday morning before steady to rapid weakening is set to begin later on in the day. One couple had the experience of a lifetime over the weekend, when they became engaged in front of a tornado in South Dakota. Stormchasers Bryce Shelton and Paige Berdomas were tracking tornadoes during a severe weather outbreak in the Mount Rushmore State, when they saw a beautiful twister in the distance. This was the moment when Shelton decided to finally pop the question. Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather: Stifling heat wave begins to abate; 'ring of fire' to bring more storms
Welcome to the Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather. It's Wednesday, June 25, 2025. Start your day with everything you need to know about today's weather. You can also get a quick briefing of national, regional and local weather whenever you like with the FOX Weather Update podcast. A massive heat dome that sparked the first major heat wave of the summer brought record-breaking temperatures to cities from the Midwest to the Northeast this week, but some much-needed relief from the extreme weather is on the horizon. On Monday, 30 cities across the eastern half of the U.s. broke or tied century-old records, and another 11 cities did the same on Tuesday. Highs will once again climb into the mid- to upper 90s on Wednesday along the Interstate 95 corridor on the East Coast, but temperatures will moderate across the Northeast starting Thursday, with temperatures dropping back into the 70s by Friday. Rounds of severe storms will continue across the central and northern tier of the U.S. on Wednesday as a large dome of high pressure sits across the Southeast, the FOX Forecast Center said. These "ring of fire" storms will pop up with daytime heating into the afternoon, delivering rounds of potentially severe thunderstorms across areas from the Plains eastward into the mid-Atlantic. A separate area of severe weather is expected across the Southeast from Virginia through Florida. Severe weather made its presence known when a group of 20 people were struck by lightning while swimming at a South Carolina beach park Tuesday evening, emergency officials said. The thunderstorm swept through Lexington around 4:43 p.m. ET. One lightning bolt struck a group of eight adults and 12 children at Dominion Beach Park at Dreher Shoals Dam, according to a Lexington County spokesperson. Beachgoers in South Portland, Maine, came upon a curious sight over the weekend, when they spotted a large, orange-red jellyfish lurking in the shallow water. Known as a Lion's Mane Jellyfish, the animal is a member of the largest jellyfish species in the world, according to the Smithsonian. The specimen found in South Portland appeared as shaggy as its feline namesake, as hair-like components of its vivid crimson bell floated in the water. This system has been dubbed Invest 90L, which is a naming convention used by the NHC to identify areas it is investigating for possible development into a tropical depression or tropical storm within the next seven days. Potential Tropical Cyclone Four-E has been designated in the Eastern Pacific and is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Dalila on Friday. A potential tropical cyclone designation allows the National Hurricane Center to issue forecasts before a tropical depression, storm or hurricane has developed. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for parts of the southwestern Mexican coastline, including the city of Manzanillo. Ongoing storms and downpours moving east across the South will increase the flood threat for major cities across Louisiana and Arkansas on Friday and into Saturday. This comes as San Antonio, Texas, is in recovery mode after being struck by historic and deadly flash flooding on Thursday. As storms shift to the east, the flooding risk moves with it into Louisiana, Arkansas and southwestern Tennessee into Friday and Saturday. A Level 2 out of 4 flash flood risk is present in these regions into the early weekend. Storms are expected to form Friday afternoon over much of Montana and will extend into Wyoming, through western Nebraska, and into the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. These storms will likely produce hail and damaging wind gusts. There is a chance of a few tornadoes, especially in parts of Wyoming and Montana which are under a Level 3 out of 5 risk of severe thunderstorms. Roads are closed, and first responders are conducting high-water rescues in the San Antonio area after relentless rain in Texas led to numerous reports of flash flooding, with more rounds of heavy precipitation on the way Thursday. Several inches of rain fell across San Antonio and surrounding communities in a short period of time, making the situation even more dangerous. "In San Antonio proper, we've picked up over 5.5 inches of rain in three hours," FOX Weather Meteorologist Britta Merwin said. "These are very aggressive rain rates." The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two areas to watch for tropical development in the Eastern Pacific, including Invest 93E, which is expected to become a tropical depression or Tropical Storm Dalila late this week or over the weekend. Invest 93E is currently a broad area of low pressure located several hundred miles southwest of southern Mexico. This disturbance has a medium chance of developing into at least a tropical depression in the next two days and a high chance in the next seven days. If Invest 93E attains tropical storm status, it will be named Dalila.
