Fawn rescued from Springfield's Forest Park construction area
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A member of the City of Springfield Parks Department rescued a fawn at Forest Park. Dakin Humane Society in Springfield awarded large grant for facility upgrade Mayor Domenic Sarno of Springfield states that Glenn Altro of the Springfield Parks Department rescued a fawn that got stuck in the Walker Grandstand construction area in Forest Park. Altro was able to reunite the fawn with its mother. According to white-tailed deer are common in Massachusetts and get their iconic name from the white underside of their tail, which they raise when alarmed. This type of deer can reach a length of 6 ft. and a height of about 3 ft. In the summer, the upper coat of this deer appears to be reddish-brown with short, thin, straight wiry hairs. According to the following are ways to avoid hitting a deer while driving: If you see one deer, watch for more. Deer are herd animals and travel in groups. If one deer darts across the road, there's a good chance there are more to follow. Keep your lights on and your eyes open. Deer are most active at dawn and dusk when you have the most difficulty seeing. Plus, your headlights might reflect off a deer's eyes making it easier to spot. Stay in the center lane (when you can), allowing you more time to see the deer and the deer more time to see you. Apply brakes calmly and maintain your course. When you see a deer, brake accordingly and continue in your lane. Swerving to avoid the deer can create other accidents and the deer might dart into your new path anyway. Honk your horn. One long blast of your car's horn could scare a deer out of your way. Car enthusiasts attend annual Wilbraham Hill Climb
WILBRAHAM, Mass. (WWLP) – Car enthusiasts stopped by Wilbraham on Saturday for the town's annual Hill Climb. The Wilbraham Hill Climb is over 100 years old. It started as a test bed for many local automotive companies, including Springfield Rolls-Royce, Indian Motorcycles, and Knox Automobiles. Now, it is a competition to be named the 'King of the Mountain.' Dakin Humane Society hosts annual 'Will Run for Cookies 5k' 'The winning time back in 1908 was like 1:06,' said Jeff DeMarey, Director of the Springfield to Boston Education Foundation. 'And if you can think about it now in 2025, they're accomplishing the task in probably 59 to 60 seconds. So in 100 years plus, they haven't really knocked that much off the time.' The one-mile-long course gains 700 feet in elevation over two hill climbs. Since 1908, classic cars have been climbing up Monson Road in Wilbraham with a need for speed. 22News got to experience the climb this year, joining Jim, the driver of the 1933 Ford 'Elgin' Roadster. While the Hill Climb may be in the name, there was also a large car show, bringing together people of all ages. 'I created the Springfield to Boston Foundation to actually do that, and get the kids involved,' DeMarey said. 'And when I mean kids, I mean from Nolan, right up to 30 to 40-year-olds, or veterans, or disabled veterans that wanna get involved.' Nolan Burke got involved when he mentioned his love of cars to his fifth-grade science teacher, who just happened to be Jeff DeMarey's wife. 'He dragged me over to the Greenwich concourse in Greenwich, Connecticut, where I ended up meeting Wayne Carini for the first time,' Burke said. 'And I got to see a bunch of other amazing cars.' Despite having his birthday around the corner, Nolan will only be turning 14 years old. But he already has his first car, a 1977 Pontiac Catalina. 'It's a two-door coupe, which isn't very common for the second-generation Catalina,' Burke said. 'That's not really common, most of the Catalinas are four doors.' The rain held off for much of the day, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy the classic cars, crafts, and food. Dakin Humane Society hosts annual ‘Will Run for Cookies 5k'
WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Dakin Humane Society hosted its 4th annual 'Will Run for Cookies 5k' on Saturday. In 2022, volunteers with Dakin Humane Society helped rescue a kitten named Beanie and her siblings before a winter storm, and Beanie got a warm place to call home. This story inspired nearly 200 people to raise money for other animals in the first 'Will Run for Cookies 5k' four years ago at Stanley Park in Westfield. Most common dog breeds available for adoption in Massachusetts Now, thousands of animals will get the chance to find a new home. Saturday marks the fourth annual race in the same place. Dakin creates a happy and healthy life for 20,000 animals each year through many programs and services. 'One is our adoption program, our pet health center, and then our spay and neuter clinic,' said Stacey Price, Director of Development and Marketing at Dakin Humane Society. 'So all the funds raised here today goes to support those three main programs.' These reasons were why over 600 people participated in running or walking through and around the park with their dogs or by themselves. 'I support Dakin and all they do for the animals in this valley,' said participant Debra J'Anthony. 'This is my third time coming out on this run.' Some even traveled from Connecticut to participate in the 2k walk option again. 'My wife did a lot of rehab with animals,' said participant John Grundstrom. 'Exclusively hawks and owls and even squirrels, and I think it's a great cause.' The goal was to raise $10,000. The participants helped exceed that in raising more than $30,000. At the end of the race, there were 18 prizes awarded for each bracket, the first 5k dog and human participant, top fundraiser, and fundraising team. The Humane Society gave away sweet treats and cookies. It was their way of saying thank you to all the participants once they reached the finish line.
