Court sentences villager to life imprisonment for election-related murder and 10 years for attempted murder in Ludhiana.
Ludhiana: Justice is served more than seven years after village politics took a fatal turn. A local court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the 2018 murder of a villager he shot in the head in a revenge attack linked to a local election dispute, while also handing him a 10-year sentence in a separate case of attempted murder.
Daljit Singh 'Jeeta' was convicted of shooting Gurcharan Singh fatally at the village bus stand in Jalajan on Jan 12, 2018. The court of additional sessions judge Sandeep Singh Bajwa also imposed a fine of ₹4 lakh on Daljit Singh and directed ₹3 lakh be paid to the victim's family as compensation. The prosecution said Daljit Singh, accompanied by his brothers, Balwant and Gurmukh Singh, had targeted Gurcharan Singh after the victim's family had refused to support their relative Ramandeep Kaur in an election for village sarpanch.
After the killing, Daljit Singh allegedly tried to target other members of Gurcharan's family as well, firing at the victim's granddaughter but missing.
Police booked the three brothers under multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and criminal intimidation, as well as under the Arms Act. During the trial, Daljit Singh denied the charges, but the court found that he had failed to provide it with credible evidence in his defence or show any bias from police or anything that could explain a false accusation.

"The act was intentional, carried out with knowledge of its fatal consequences, and was committed by Daljit Singh," the court observed.
While Daljit Singh was acquitted of lesser charges, including attempted murder and criminal intimidation, due to insufficient evidence, his brothers, Balwant and Gurmukh Singh, were also acquitted of all charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). In a separate case, the same court sentenced Daljit Singh to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for a Jan 7, 2018, shooting spree at Jalajan village, holding him guilty of attempting to murder four members of another family amid a long-running family rivalry.
Complainant Gurwinder Singh said the attack had stemmed from tensions following his aunt's electoral victory over the wife of Balwant Singh. The court held that Daljit Singh had opened fire with a revolver, injuring Gurwinder Singh, Jatinder Singh, and Swaranjit Kaur, and also fired upon a fourth person, Amrinder Singh. "The prosecution has been able to prove that the convict went on a shooting spree with a revolver, injuring several members of the same family — some of them seriously — showing that his intention was to kill all of them," the court said.
