News 8 Primetime 585 Elite Awards: Girls track
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Here are the News 8 Primetime 585 Elite Award winners for girls track: This senior was invited to a pair of prestigious national indoor events, competing in both the Nike Indoor Nationals at the New York Armory and the New Balance Indoor Nationals in Boston. She set school records in the 55-meter dash, the 200 and the long jump. At sectionals, she earned the 55-meter title for the second year in a row and her time of 7.11 was the fastest of any sprinter. She also helped her relay team to a 4 x 400 sectional championship and earned a spot in the 55-meter state final where she finished 7th. She is a high honor roll student, a black scholar, and while she was doing all this, she also found time to play on the basketball team. The large school girls track award winner is Jayda Solomon of Spencerport. Our small school winner is another senior sprinter who impressed on and off the track. She also ran in the Nike Indoor Nationals and the New Balance Indoor Nationals. She won a section title in the 55-meter dash and helped her 4 x 200 relay team to a second-place sectional finish. She also set school records this year in the 55 meters and 60 meters. Her season concluded with a 10th place finish at the state finals, where large and small class runners compete together. Beyond athletics, she is an Honor Roll student, Principal's Club member, and an Urban League of Rochester Black Scholar, Next year she will run on a scholarship at Niagara University. Aquinas athletes finalize plans on National Signing Day
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Across the country and right here at home, local high school senior athletes celebrated National Signing Day on Wednesday. These student-athletes used the day to finalize where their athletic journeys will take them next. On Wednesday, four of Aquinas Institute's most gifted student-athletes committed to playing their sport at the collegiate level. Two of them signed to play football, while the other two signed to continue on with track and field. So, the fact that I got those, you know, and having Division 1 and Division 2, so, I just want to make sure that everybody knows my name by the time I'm done,' said Derrion Battle, who signed with Gannon University for football. 'It's been my dream for awhile, since I was a kid – I started running track since 7th grade. So, it's been like, awhile – and I always knew I could do it,' said Dallis Jones, who signed with Niagara University for track and field.
