Can Jake Ferguson Earn New Dallas Cowboys Contract In 2025?

Can Jake Ferguson Earn New Dallas Cowboys Contract In 2025? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 season will be a defining one for Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson as he looks to bounce back from a poor year. Advertisement Thought to be ready to take his game to the next level, injury, concussion, and a quarterback change saw the "big biscuit" fail to replicate his Pro Bowl form, and now, as he enters a contract year, it's gut-check time for No. 87. And he knows it, stating last month, "I definitely wasn't satisfied with how I played last year," and with just 494 yards and zero touchdowns, it's easy to see why. But as we turn our attention to Oxnard in a couple of weeks, given that Jake is in a contract year, will he earn another crack at it with Dallas? We don't have to look too far back to say that it might not be an easy task. Advertisement Dale Zanine-Imagn Images Former Dallas tight end Dalton Schultz was in a similar position to Ferguson at the end of 2022, and he was more consistent. Schultz posted yards totals of 615, 808, and 577 in his final three years, along with 17 touchdowns, plus in the playoffs in 2022, posted 122 yards and three touchdowns in two games. And he didn't get a new deal. Now, Schultz signed a three-year, $36 million contract with the Houston Texans, averaging $12 million APY, and puts him in the top 10 highest-paid tight ends in football. Will Dallas do something similar if Ferguson has another Pro Bowl season? We can't see the Cowboys paying $10 million APY or more, but this is a new regime, so who knows? But we get the sense Ferguson is going to have to have a career year for it to even be a consideration. Advertisement He's got the talent, but so did Schultz. Can Ferguson do something Dalton couldn't and get a second contract? Texas Dalton Schultz snubbed spot in ESPN's top TEs for 2025

Dalton Schultz's dominant first season with the Houston Texans might have been a fluke. He can change that narrative entering the new season and Year 3 with Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud, but so much attention has been thrown onto other players that his persona could be lost as he continues to age. In the latest ESPN rankings on tight ends, Schultz was snubbed a top 10 spot behind names like Las Vegas' Brock Bowers, Detroit's Sam LaPorta and San Francisco's George Kittle. That was expected. But when asked to name the first five off the list, Schultz was passed up for names like New England's Hunter Henry, Chicago's Cole Kmet and Pittsburgh's Jonnu Smith. Schultz, who last season caught 53 passes for 532 yards and two touchdowns, was the first tight end listed also to receive votes, so he was considered by some at least a top 15 option heading into the season. The Texans are hopeful the 2023 version of Schultz can be reignited under new offensive coordinator Nick Caley this season so the contract extension looks more promising. Here's a list of the tight ends listed ahead of Schultz heading into the regular season, as ranked by NFL coaches, executives and personnel members. The Texans open training camp next week at the Methodist Training Center.

One Texans standout listed as potential cut candidates this offseason

With the 2025 NFL offseason in full swing, sights leave the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl win in the past and turn toward the NFL Scouting Combine next week. Currently, the rumor mill is swirling around potential moves that could alter the 2025 season via free agency. But while some free agents are known, others still remain on their current roster and soon could hit the market. The Houston Texans could make several cuts to potentially save money entering free agency. Tight end Dalton Schultz, offensive tackle Tytus Howard and offensive lineman Shaq Mason have all been rumored to be on the chopping block, but nothing is set in stone entering next week's combine. Matt Okada listed several roster-cut candidates from both the NFC and AFC. For the Texans, only defensive lineman Denico Autry appeared as the top candidate set to leave ahead of the legal tampering period on March 10. Autry's uninspiring first season in Houston came with several faults. He was suspended for the first six games after violating the NFL's policy against performance-enhancing substances during training camp. Once he returned, there was never a set role for him between defensive tackle and defensive end. Then again, DeMeco Ryans raved of Autry's leadership for a younger defensive line room and his position flexibility. General manager Nick Caserio also called him a "junkyard dog" who provided the type of mentality needed to win, Houston should cut several players, but Autry feels like a later designation if anything. Moving him down the pecking order while several other offensive players move up seems more sustainable entering next month's new calendar season. The Texans currently have less than $5 million in salary to work with entering free agency.
