Telangana logs highest organ donation rate across the country

Hyderabad: Telangana has been recognised for its highest organ donation rate across the country under the Jeevandan programme by the central health ministry. The Union health minister, JP Nadda, presented the award to the Jeevandan team on behalf of the Telangana govt at the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day, organised by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), in New Delhi on Saturday. According to officials, Telangana recorded an organ donation rate of 4.88 donors per million population (pmp) in 2024, surpassing the national average of 0.8 pmp. Since the inception of Jeevandan programm in 2012, it has facilitated organ and tissue donation from 1,673 deceased donors, resulting in the transplantation of 6,309 organs and tissues. Expressing happiness, health minister Damodar Rajanarasimha said that the Transplantation of Human Organs & Tissues Act (THOTA) has been recently adopted to ensure that organs are provided to people of all the sections in the society. "The Jeevandan programme has consistently set the standard for organ donation awareness, coordination and successful transplantation, establishing the state as a model for the rest of the country," said Dr Sree Bhusan Raju, nodal officer and senior nephrologist. HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday annouced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for kin of the deceased, Rs 10 Lakh for seriously injuried and Rs 5 Lakh for injured in the Sigachi Chemical Industry explosion at Pashamylaram. Earlier he had annouced a immediate relief of Rs 1 lakh for kin of the deceased and Rs 50000 for injured while directing officials to submit a detailed report on the incident. On Tuesday, the Chief Minister along with Ministers Damodar Rajanarasimha, D Sridhar Babu, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and G Vivek Venkatswamy visited the Pashamylaram Industrial Estate and inspected the explosion site at Sigachi Chemicals. During his visit, at factory premises, he held a review meeting with the officials and representatives of the company and enquired the causes and reasons for the accident. He asked the Director of Factories whether they have undertaken periodic inspections in the factory and found out any deficiencies and reported to the company to address the deficiencies? He instructed the officials to collect opinions of experts on the reasons for the occurrence of the accident. "Don't come to conclusion with general opinions and assumptions. I need specific reasons for this accident", he stated firmly. After inspecting the accident site, the Chief Minister visited the hospital at Patancheru.

He also claimed the firm may be hiding the real death blast hit at around 9.20 am inside a drying unit. Sigachi Industries said in a statement, 'The incident happened at approximately 9.20 am in the vicinity of our Hyderabad plant located at Pashamylaram, Phase-1.'Director General of State Disaster Response and Fire Services Y Nagi Reddy explained, 'As per industrial experts, the incident happened during the air handling/drying of Microcrystalline cellulose. We are currently unsure of the number of people under the debris.' He added later, 'Today, at around 9.48 am, there was a blast in the drying unit at Sigachi Pharma Company. The explosion led to a fire. A total of 12 people have died and 35 are injured in the incident.'The company announced a complete production halt at the Hyderabad unit for 90 days for repairs. 'In addition to the human losses, the incident also caused damage to certain ancillary equipment and civil structures within the facility,' Sigachi said in its stock exchange filing. 'While the exact number of injured is currently being confirmed, the well-being of our personnel remains our foremost priority.'This unit produces about 6,000 metric tonnes of MCC every year — nearly a third of the company's the blast, thick smoke spread across the area. Many locals complained of breathing problems. Authorities began evacuating residents as a precaution while rescue teams searched for trapped Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss. He announced Rs 2 lakh for the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 for the injured. In the past 30 months, Telangana has seen at least 10 major blasts in industrial areas like Pashamylaram and Patancheru. This might have triggered a blast.'HYDRAA Commissioner A V Ranganath added, 'The intense heat built up in the container led to the blast which impacted an area up to 50 metres.'As rescue teams sift through debris, families of workers wait for news. The explosion at a Telangana pharmaceutical plant on Monday, June 30, 2025, led to the collapse of the unit and quickly spread fire to nearby buildings on-site.(PTI) Describing the aftermath to the media, eyewitnesses said the blast's impact was so powerful that 'workers were tossed into the air and thrown several metres away.' Reports indicate that several workers were close to the reactor when it exploded. The blast occurred around 9.20 am on Monday at the production unit of Sigachi Industries Ltd, a prominent producer of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), as well as pharmaceutical excipients, food ingredients, and cosmetic products. In a statement, the company confirmed: 'The incident happened at approximately 9.20 am in the vicinity of our Hyderabad plant located at Pashamylaram, Phase-1.' Later in the day, Sigachi Industries informed the stock exchange that production at the Hyderabad facility would be suspended for 90 days to allow for repairs and restoration. The toll in the chemical factory blast near Hyderabad in Telangana rose to 34 on Tuesday, a police official told PTI. The explosion, which occurred on Monday at a drying unit of the Sigachi Industries' plant in the Pashamylaram industrial area, triggered a fire. Due to this, part of the building collapsed and workers were trapped under the debris. 'As many as 31 bodies have been extricated from the debris,' Sangareddy Superintendent of Police Paritosh Pankaj told PTI. Three others died at a hospital during treatment, he added. Around 90 employees were in the factory at the time of the blast, Telangana Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times. Rescue operations by the National Disaster Response Force, Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency and Telangana Fire Disaster Response teams continued on Tuesday, the newspaper reported. Sigachi Industries had said that production at its Hyderabad plant would be paused for around 90 days to restore affected equipment and structures, PTI reported. On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the families of those who died. Those who suffered injuries will be given Rs 50,000 each, he said. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had told officials to ensure that the injured persons receive appropriate medical treatment and said the government was committed to supporting the affected families. Sigachi Industries specialises in pharma excipients, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and food ingredients. Following the blast, the company's stock on the Bombay Stock Exchange fell sharply by over 9%, trading at Rs 47.89 by 1 pm.
