Can Fields Answer Jets' QB Question?
Can Fields Answer Jets' QB Question? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When the New York Jets signed Justin Fields in free agency to a two-year, $40 million deal, there were a lot of questions raised about it. Advertisement Do the Jets see Fields as the long-term starter under Aaron Glenn? Or will he be seen purely as a bridge option until the franchise can get the quarterback they truly want next offseason? Those questions can be answered by Fields in 2025 if he plays well enough to turn the Jets' head when thinking about him as the long-term solution. And for ESPN's Dan Graziano, Justin will get his chance to answer New York's quarterback question to the satisfaction of wondering fans. "It sounds like the Jets are going to give Fields a real chance to answer this question, one way or the other," Graziano writes. "They certainly haven't ruled out the idea that he can be their long-term starter at quarterback. He's still only 26 years old and has a unique combination of experience and upside. Advertisement "That said, the $10 million in guaranteed money on his contract for 2026 won't stand in the way of the team drafting or acquiring someone it sees as a better option next spring if Fields doesn't play well enough to convince it otherwise." Justin Fields And The JetsBy Tony Fisher Fields has it all in front of him this upcoming season, and yes, he has had a solid start to his offseason, but once training camp begins, we will see how he is truly faring in Tanner Engstrand's system. The former first-round pick, by playing well in the regular season, can not only give the Jets something to think about, but he can also put himself into the shop window of other teams who might be in the market for a quarterback. Advertisement So there are a couple of ways this could go for Fields in 2025. He has the tools to answer New York's quarterback question - but the bigger question is, can he? NFL rumors: Two Bucs divisional rivals expected to be active in free agency
NFL rumors: Two Bucs divisional rivals expected to be active in free agency The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the entire NFC South running around with their hair on fire asking, "What can we do to win this division?" The Bucs have won the division for the last four years and have done so with a roster that has been very flexible but consistent at the same time. The area they continue to thrive in is with their offense. According to NFL insiders, the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons are ready to combat the Bucs by being active in free agency. ESPN recently had insiders Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler share their notes they gathered during last week's NFL Scouting Combine. Graziano shared that the Panthers and Falcons are ready to be "active" in free agency, writing, "Two NFC South teams that I expect to be fairly aggressive in pursuing defensive upgrades in the draft and free agency are the Falcons and Panthers. Carolina is in better shape cap-wise than Atlanta, largely because the Panthers didn't just spent $100 million and the eighth pick in the draft on the same position a year ago. The Falcons are likely to use most, if not all, of their early-round picks on defensive players, and they have some interest in trading their No. 15 pick to collect more draft capital, depending on how the first half of Round 1 shakes out." While the idea of a team spending its way to the top makes sense, in the NFL, it is rarely executed properly. The Panthers spent some money last year in free agency, and down the stretch, their offense started to take shape. As they mention, with the Falcons, they are heavily invested in one position. In the MLB, you have the evil empire that is the Dodgers, who can spend their way to a World Series title, or chance, but in the NFL it isn't that simple. While this may be a scary thought for Bucs fans to know they are coming, don't panic yet.

NFL Rumors: Bucs remain 'optimistic' they can re-sign Chris Godwin
NFL Rumors: Bucs remain 'optimistic' they can re-sign Chris Godwin The NFL Scouting Combine allows teams and agents to discuss the basis of their future dealings, unofficially, of course. That being said, some good news came out of the combine, as unofficial as it may seem, involving the Bucs and Chris Godwin. ESPN insiders Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler recapped everything they heard from folks from all 32 NFL teams, including the Bucs. Chris Godwin is a looming free agent who will complicate the team's case when it comes time to securing a new deal. Dan Graziano doesn't discuss the idea of a new deal in depth, but he shares some good news. ESPN's Dan Graziano writes, "The Buccaneers continue to work to bring back wide receiver Chris Godwin before he hits the free agent market. It's unclear at this point whether they can reach an agreement, but the hallmark of Tampa Bay's 2024 free agency was its ability to retain its own, including Mike Evans and Baker Mayfield -- so they're optimistic about their chances of reaching a deal with Godwin." The team has made it clear that they want to have Godwin return. General Manager Jason Licht said those words during the Scouting Combine and we all know how important he is. That being said, when the likes of Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir are securing a four-year, $60 million deal, it is going to complicate his contract talks.

Report: Panthers expected to seek 'big-name players' in free agency
Report: Panthers expected to seek 'big-name players' in free agency The Carolina Panthers may be prepared to go big-game hunting this offseason. ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano and senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler just unloaded their freshest batch of intel coming out of the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. And after chatting with league executives, coaches, agents, scouts and players, they wouldn't be surprised if Carolina ends up being a major factor in free agency. Graziano writes: Expect the Panthers to be seeking big-name players in free agency. I think Carolina could be in on the top safeties -- Jevon Holland, Camryn Bynum, etc. -- and might be one of the teams willing to spend big to lure defensive tackle Milton Williams away from the Super Bowl champion Eagles. The Panthers will also look to add edge rush help, with Chase Young being one of the intriguing options there. President of football operations/general manager Dan Morgan has made his desire for a revamped defense known. Morgan, while in Indianapolis this week, listed off the unit's top needs to team play-by-play voice Anish Shroff. "I think you go interior d-line, you go outside linebacker, you go safety. And then, obviously, we need another corner," Morgan stated. "So there's a lot of holes to fill. It's not gonna happen overnight. But I think as we move through free agency and we move through the draft, I think things will start to kinda come together." Carolina, in 2024, set a new NFL record for most points allowed (534) in a single season. They also relinquished the most rushing yards per game (179.8) and amassed the league's lowest pressure rate (16.2 percent).

Lions will enter free agency in top 5 in the NFC in salary cap room
The NFL hasn't yet set the salary cap for the upcoming 2025 season, but a report from ESPN's Dan Graziano indicates that the figure will be some $25 million higher than it was in 2024. It's a much higher bump than has been widely projected, meaning teams will likely have more cap room to work with than originally anticipated. The exact cap figures should be finalized in the coming days, with the NFL Scouting Combine coming next week and closely followed by the onset of free agency. Most of the initial free agent negotiations take place during the combine in Indianapolis, aside from the scouting aspects of the event. The Detroit Lions come in fifth in the NFC in available cap room in the updated cap projections, per the 33rd Team. Detroit cracks the top 10 among the 32 NFL teams at the 10 spot. Keep in mind that Detroit has some key players (Kerby Joseph, Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams) who can get contract extensions this offseason, so not all of that money is available to spend on free agents.
