According to NFL insiders, the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons are ready to combat the Bucs by being active in free agency.
ESPN recently had insiders Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler share their notes they gathered during last week's NFL Scouting Combine. Graziano shared that the Panthers and Falcons are ready to be "active" in free agency, writing, "Two NFC South teams that I expect to be fairly aggressive in pursuing defensive upgrades in the draft and free agency are the Falcons and Panthers. Carolina is in better shape cap-wise than Atlanta, largely because the Panthers didn't just spent $100 million and the eighth pick in the draft on the same position a year ago. The Falcons are likely to use most, if not all, of their early-round picks on defensive players, and they have some interest in trading their No. 15 pick to collect more draft capital, depending on how the first half of Round 1 shakes out."
While the idea of a team spending its way to the top makes sense, in the NFL, it is rarely executed properly. The Panthers spent some money last year in free agency, and down the stretch, their offense started to take shape. As they mention, with the Falcons, they are heavily invested in one position.
In the MLB, you have the evil empire that is the Dodgers, who can spend their way to a World Series title, or chance, but in the NFL it isn't that simple. While this may be a scary thought for Bucs fans to know they are coming, don't panic yet.
