Podcast reviews: Busting ADHD myths, using mosquitoes for good and the psychology in our everyday decisions

Neurodiversity is in the news a lot lately, though often for the wrong reasons, with some public figures having dismissed the increased incidence of autism as a 'fad', where others contend that diagnoses have increased due to improved clinical evaluation. As such, podcasts such as Climbing the Walls (Apple, Spotify) are a valuable resource, this new limited investigative series focusing on ADHD in women and girls which is historically misdiagnosed due to presenting very different symptoms to men and boys – who have been widely presumed as the default in trials and treatment. It's hosted by health and science journalist Danielle Elliott who, informed by her own experience of ADHD, talks to experts in the field about why there has been a surge in women and girls being diagnosed, the pros and cons of social media in raising awareness, and the impact of fluctuating hormones on symptoms. Alisha Wainwright, after studying botany in Florida, moved to Panama for her PhD research. 'Science is one of the toughest industries because everyone is vying for the same pot of money to fund their research,' she told W magazine. 'I had a very weird anthropological-botanical focus, and I couldn't find anyone to give me the money to study it. I had to shift my focus to something a little broader, and I wasn't as interested in it.' And so she swapped botany for... acting, starring in TV series Shadowhunters and Raising Dion. She gets to indulge her twin passions in Wellcome: When Science Finds a Way (Apple, Spotify; which uncovers the stories of how scientists and communities across the globe are tackling urgent health challenges, such as how infesting mosquitoes with a naturally occurring bacterium could prevent transmission of the Zika virus and dengue and yellow fever, and how the indigenous practise of 'cultural burning' may be key to controlling modern wildfires. How do we break habits we know are bad for us but we just can't stop? Why are we obsessed with scaring ourselves with true crime podcasts? Why do we own pets? Could there actually be anything to astrology? These are among the questions asked on Everything's Psychology (Apple, Spotify; with Paul Davies, who shines a light on the secrets of the brain that rule our everyday lives, including how corporate groupthink can manipulate our way of thinking and decision-making.

Starting Point hosts community launch event Tuesday

A coalition of Johnson County nonprofits have launched Starting Point, an online database of comprehensive community resources with contact information for over 200 of government, nonprofit and faith-based agencies. The Starting Point database, accessible at provides residents a central hub to learn about health and social service resources available throughout Johnson County. Resources include mental health help for various ages and issues, housing support, services for youth, seniors and families and transportation programs. 'Starting Point will transform the way all members of our community access local resources, anytime — day or night,' CASA of Johnson County Executive Director Danielle Elliott said. The official community launch event for community members to learn more about the platform and services available is from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in the Cleburne High School cafeteria at 850 N. Nolan River Road. While the event is a come-and-go style, there will be a live demonstration at 5:45 p.m. Light refreshments will be available. Starting Point was launched after The Center of Nonprofit Management and Johnson County conducted a study that identified the disconnect between the county's residents and their level of accessibility to the over 600 local nonprofits and their resources. Starting Point's collaborative effort is composed of a board of directors from REACH Council, CASA, Johnson County Child Welfare, Keene Church, Meals on Wheels, Cleburne ISD and the Johnson County Constable's office. 'As professionals working in the community, we often see that the challenges people struggle with can often be symptoms of larger issues,' REACH Johnson County Coalition Coordinator Gracie Gray said. 'Starting Point is not only a resource for the community to use, but one that is helpful for service providers, social workers and other case managers to identify local organizations to help address the holistic picture.' In addition to the community database, Starting Point's website features helpful information and articles on topics like physical and behavioral health, children and family legislation, parenting guides and more. Community members can create an account and save information for future use, develop emergency plans and coordinate care. Support for Starting Point comes from Texas Health Resources as part of the Community Impact Grant.
