The Hibees led for over an hour at Midtjylland after Jamie McGrath's early strike and - despite forfeiting plenty of possession - had chances to double that lead in the first half. Midtjylland ramped up the pressure in the second half and grabbed their equaliser with less than 20 minutes to go in the first leg. Still, the terrific Hibs support that made the trip would have likely snapped your hand off to be in the tie heading back to Edinburgh and they certainly are that. David Gray's side have strengthened over the summer but the bookmaker odds suggest they'll have to pull off another near-perfect 90 minutes performance to progress. Hibs are 29/20 to progress through to the next round. Midtjylland had the perfect prep for this, though as they thumped Sonderjyske 6-2 in the Danish Superliga over the weekend. Midtjylland 1 Hibs 1: Jamie McGrath the instant hero as David Gray threatens to write new chapter in club's folklore
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DAVID GRAY just doesn't do ordinary for Hibs. The man who ended 114-years of hurt with the Scottish Cup final winner in 2016, and the manager who last season achieved a third place finish at the first attempt, did it again. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 5 Hibs' Jack Iredale battles for the ball Credit: AP 5 Hibs celebrate an early opener through McGrath's free kick Credit: EPA 5 A hard fought draw for David Gray's men to back to Easter Road Credit: AP An outstanding underdog result in his first Euro tie as a boss which now gives Hibs a fantastic opportunity to make the Europa League third qualifying round. Jamie McGrath delivered a priceless early opener on his debut - and only a late Aral Simsir dead-ball finish denied them a famous triumph. It was heroic stuff from the Hibees with their 1,000-plus travelling support jubilant. Gray started two summer signings in midfield - Josh Mulligan and McGrath - and put record £1 million-plus signing Thibault Klidje on the bench. The Hibees entered this stage for the first time in two years. And they were up against a side with impressive domestic and Euro pedigree, only missing out on the Danish Superliga title with last day heartache while 11-months ago coming agonisingly close to reaching the Champions League proper. Midtjylland recovered from their sickening play-off defeat to Slovan Bratislava to register decent Europa League results against Hoffenheim, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Union Saint Gilloise and Fenerbahce. It was a balmy evening in a superb, compact venue with a stand upgraded at a cost of £10.5 million. Steven Gerrard's Rangers had conquered here in 2019 but this was a much greater ask for Hibs. Yet, in a stunning first half, they made it look easy…rocking the far-from-great Danes with a quick-fire opener and pushing them back for large swathes of an opening 45 minutes played in stifling heat. Legendary Mixu Paatelainen lifts lid on Jim McLean's brutal blast, infamous Walter Smith bust-up and his Hibs job regrets It was everything Gray would've wished for up to half-time. But NO ONE could've legislated for the oldest and most experienced player on the park - 36-year-old home keeper Jonas Lossl - producing an embarrassing howler to gift Hibs a dream lead. After only nine seconds Boyle had a goal-bound shot blocked. Then after two minutes a great Chris Cadden ball to the back post was just too high for a free Boyle who couldn't get his header on target. Moments later Boyle had another shot heading for the target until it was deflected for a corner. Midtjylland were rattled, their defence ropey with every ball into the box. Boyle missed a peach of a third minute chance, somehow failing to guide a six-yard header home from a brilliant Levitt cross. Hibs No1 Jordan Smith didn't get his first touch until the sixth minute - and you checked if he'd had to put down the matchday programme to deal with it. Then Hibs struck. McGrath won the free-kick from which he delivered what looked like a straightforward clipped ball to the near post - except the hapless Lossl was somehow deceived. The ex-Huddersfield Town and Brentford goalie had to do better, only reacting to palm the ball away after it had clearly gone over the line. The obligatory VAR check quickly backed up the quick decision of German ref Robert Schroder and near-side assistant Sven Waschitzki to give it. Midtjylland eventually woke up - and it was the predicted long throws of ex-Rangers loanee Kevin Mbabu that caused most concern, winning several corners. 5 Hibs boss David Gray Credit: EPA 5 Kieron Bowie tussles for the ball with Midtjylland's Mads Bech Credit: AP He absolutely shelled them in with his arms. Striker Adam Buksa headed narrowly over in a rare first half scare for Hibs. But then Bowie missed a wonderful chance for 2-0 in the 24th minute - a point-blank shot brilliantly blocked by home skipper Mads Bech Sorensen. Seven minutes later the highly rated Franculino Dju - taking advantage of Hibs carelessness - stormed up the pitch and, with Hibs for once vulnerable, made space in the box before wildly firing over. Hibs, however, quickly showed their resolve with a Bowie shot just over and then, five minutes from half-time, a Boyle goal chalked off for offside. It would've been his 100th for the club. He sprinted clear to a knock-on from his partner and clinically drilled home - but VAR officially ruled it out as half-time came. Smith got his first save after 50 minutes - smothering well a powerfully struck Pedro Bravo shot. Midfield schemer Bravo was now pulling the strings with Hibs dropping deeper, spreading play and shooting every chance. Yet, incredibly, he would be hooked on the hour. By then Mulligan had fired at Lossl from 20-yards while Smith once more did well to hold an Oliver Sorensen effort. Hibs, though, were breached in the 72nd minute, stopper Jack Iredale booked for a foul and from the free-kick Danish-born former Turkiye under-21 Simsir curled home an excellent 25-yarder. It was a sickener but it had been coming. Then it was really backs-to-the-wall for Hibs in a tense finale. Tempers flared in added time as home captain Sorensen and Warren O'Hora clashed with the Hibs stopper pushing his rival to the ground. Both were booked. Ultimately, though, it was big Hibs satisfaction. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

David Gray believes Hibs fans will 'make a huge difference' in Denmark tonight
David Gray states the travelling support will 'make a huge difference' as Hibs take on FC Midtjylland in their first UEFA Europa League qualifier tonight. The team travelled from Edinburgh yesterday afternoon, before training in the MCH Arena where they will take on the 2024/25 Danish Superliga runners-up. After competing in vigorous pre-season friendlies, including fixtures against Dutch giants Ajax and English Premier League club AFC Bournemouth, Gray believes his team are as prepared as can be for their first continental challenge. 'Players have come through the games, got minutes into their legs,' said Gray. 'This match is why we have been doing what we have been doing, playing against a lot of tough opposition within pre-season. 'I've not been getting carried away with results. From a physical point of view, we feel we've got the players in a good position. 'We were a little later arriving [in Denmark] so we had to tweak our session,' he added on matchday minus one preparations for Hibs' first competitive match of the season. 'It was important to come to the stadium and to train on the pitch. I've experienced it myself and it gives the players a little familiarity. 'The training session was bright and bubbly. All the hard work has been done, we're all geared up to the match.' Hibs supporters have travelled to Herning, Denmark, in great numbers – and noise – ahead of the club's first European match of the 2025/26 campaign. While remembering a former trip to Brøndby, Gray spoke on how crucial the Hibees' support is for the team in Denmark. 'The fans will make a huge difference. It's their reward as well. At the start of last season, we went through tough times. The fans, as they always do, showed up in numbers. 'This is their reward, European football is what everyone wants to see. 'I'm sure it will be a fantastic occasion and hopefully we can go home with a positive result.' Gray has almost a full squad at his disposal, missing only three players in total, including two long-term injuries anticipated ahead of preparations for the first leg. 'Millsy (Lewis Miller) has not made it. Joe Newell and Rudi Molotnikov, the two longer-term ones, haven't made it. 'Apart from that, everyone is fit and healthy. The players are all in a really good place. 'Millsy was just an impact injury. 'From a squad point of view, we feel we are in a really good position and the players are chomping at the bit to be selected.' Like this: Like Related

Hibs Europa League opponents bringing old-fashioned threat to tie

Nobody said Hibs would be coming up against the Danish version of big Sam Allardyce in their first Europa League encounter … Cheap laughs aside, it's clear that Thomas Thomasberg's FC Midtjylland side boast a healthy dash of pragmatism in the purist principles that continue to drive last season's Danish Superliga runners-up. David Gray will have been well warned over what to expect. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Yes, of course, our long throws are a big threat,' admitted Kevin Mbabu, the one-time Rangers loanee who, along with Midtjylland captain Mads Bech Sorensen, provides a twin threat with the simplest of set-piece deliveries. Speaking at this club's training ground yesterday, he pointed out: 'We almost scored, I think, two goals this weekend. Of course, it's our aim to have a long throw, to create opportunities. Former Rangers loanee part of dangerous duo 'Whenever we have one around the box, we aim to take it like a corner. Hopefully, we'll get a couple tomorrow to put pressure on the team. 'There is also on the other side our captain that has very long throws as well. So it will come from both sides.' There is more to Midtjylland than merely hurling the ball into the box, of course. Although they have been known to adopt that as a tactic from just about anywhere inside the opposition half. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The skill and swashbuckling sense of adventure brought to the starting XI by top scorer Franculino Dju represents the other side of the Thomasberg blueprint. Still just 21, the Guinea-Bissau forward is already coveted by a number of major clubs – and Midtjylland have stuck a price tag of around 15 million Euros on their prize asset. 'There's no doubt he's amazing,' said club captain Mads Bech Sorensen, the centre-half adding: 'When he's at his best he's unbelievable, and right now he's doing very good for us, and he can change the game out of nothing; he's incredible.' 15 million Euro striker is danger man Supported by strike partner Adam Buksa, Franculino brings real invention to the Midtjylland attack. He scored twice in the disappointing weekend draw with newly-promoted Odense Boldklub – and had another goal disallowed. Watch enough footage of the youngster and you'll recognise a footballer who can do more than just one thing very, very well. This versatility makes him Midtjylland's most dangerous player, clearly. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad As a unit, they operate an effective press form the front. Helped by a formation that, while oft derided, covers the pitch with enormous efficiency; done well, a 4-4-2 is still extremely difficult to break down, although it does ask a lot of players. Don't expect Midtjylland to vary too much for this game. Thomasberg believes he has the better team – and won't be doing much tinkering to accommodate Hibs. That may be a mistake … but don't expect Gray to interrupt an opponent veering towards just the slightest hint of complacency. Home side chasing two-goal cushion from first leg Mbabu, asked about his team's ambition for tonight's Europa League second qualifying round first leg here in Herning, said simply: 'It's to win. Ideally, with a two-goal gap, so we can go in Edinburgh with a bit more of a cushion. 'Of course, anything can happen in football. We could win maybe 3-0 tomorrow and lose 4-0 in Scotland, but ideally we want to win and put pressure in Hibs from the start. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "We definitely want to score as early as possible and to take at least a two-goal lead to Scotland. That's our plan - but it never really goes as planned. 'Last year we played in the Europa League until the play-off against Real Sociedad and then we lost against them. Our goal is to go to the group stage and go through the group stage. 'This season we have a more experienced team, and the team is improving. I see the young players that are getting better week after week. We have to try and show that against Hibs.'
